Our four year old and my husband had a total blast on the toboggan run. I had heard about it for years so it was fun to finally see it in person and see just how popular it was despite it only being 15 degrees outside. The price includes one hour of time on the run and folks typically can make it through 2-3 times. I have to say, I was surprised at just how much fun I had watching strangers go down and seeing the whole thing. It's quite nostalgic. SO MUCH FUN! I came with my family in late December and we had a blast! There were 6 adults and two kids in our group and everyone enjoyed themselves. The toboggan rental is easy and straightforward. You fill out a yellow sheet before going up to the window and then need an ID to rent up to 4 toboggans. They range from 2-4 people and cost $13 an hour for each one. Then $6.50 for each additional half hour. If it's busy you can only go down once in an hour, but with fewer people it's possible to get down 3 times if you're walking the sled up each time. People who drive in their car with the sleds May be able to go down 4 times. I personally liked having to hike back up with the sled. It's great exercise and reminds me of running up the hills to sled back down as a kid. The sleds go up to almost 40mph. We got up to 37mph with two adults and two kids (11 and 12). It's thrilling and fun! The only scary part for me was waiting on the metal steps going up. I'm scared of heights and I was shaking waiting in the line, but it was worth the ride down! read more

Fun times at the winter Toboggan Run. Dress warm for the cold weather in the winter.

If you haven't heard, this toboggan run is awesome! Located inside of Pokagon State Park, this toboggan run is the gem of the park, IMHO, during the winter time. It is a refrigerated chute/track where you rent (as of 2018) $12/hr toboggans to go down on. The track is super fast, and whats cool is that there is a speed radar near the bottom of the run that measures how fast you're going. We topped off at 36-mph (speed limit is 42-mph). In terms of the toboggans you rent, there are two-seaters up to four-seaters, and even a "light" one, or "heavy" one. The heavier ones are supposedly made for you to go faster, but from talking to someone who had a heavy one, it didn't seem to make too much of a difference, as I had a lighter one, and we both topped off at 36-mph. Keep in mind, you do have to take the long trek uphill afterwards, and the only way to get back up is by foot. The distance I would estimate is at least 300yards or so. So imagine the difference between lugging a 30lb toboggan vs 60lb toboggan back up every time. Time-wise, on busy days, you may have to wait 30-90minutes to rent a toboggan. We went on a Saturday late afternoon and had to wait 30-minutes. But on Sunday, we were able to get a toboggan easily at around noon local time, so wait times vary depending on the day and time. Once you got a toboggan, head outside, and lug it up a few flights. The line queues up generally, but personally, the wait was no longer than 15-minutes. Once at the top of the run, staff members are there to guide you in the toboggan and how to sit. Pro-tip: Get some wearable GoPro or something, as I wouldn't risk holding your phone to video record the ride (remember, if it doesn't exist on social media, it didn't happen). Other than that, the toboggan ride was awesome. I saw kids as young as 3-4yrs old going down the chute, so I think this is very kid-friendly, despite the speed you're shooting down on. The staff was super nice and overall, a great time. If you're in the Chicago area like I am, definitely check out this place. It's an easy under 3-hour car ride straight east on I-80, and I highly recommend it. read more

Ok so first.... this is scary AF. First you need to decide what weight toboggan you need 30lb or 60lb. Then you trek this thing up like a hundred stairs to get to the top (the lazy person in my really wishes for a conveyer). Then we get up there, the workers throw the toboggan up on the track and we climbed in. The front man has to cross their legs and then everyone throws their legs up on the next person (up to 4) with the last person holding onto the straps. The workers then pull you down and let gravity take over. DO NOT LEAN!! Lmao your speed is clocked sometime towards the end. Then that's all folks.... eventually the thing stops and you grab it and take it back up. My suggestion would be take a truck or something the toboggan will fit in, park at the end just past the Inn. That way you don't have to walk the thing back. If you drive in two vehicles park one on each side and get the full use of your hour. read more

I enjoy the winter activities and this is something I look forward to doing every year. It's like a mini roller coaster but during winter. That being said it's not for everyone. If you are afraid of heights it can be a little scary when waiting in line on the stairs. Also the sled does get to a decent speed ranging anywhere between 30 mph-40 mph. I can remember my very first time here back in 1998. I was in elementary and it was for a school field trip. I am not sure how small third graders were able to carry that heavy sled all the way back up the hill but with teamwork we did it. I think that made us appreciate each ride even more because we had to work hard for it. Now being a bit older I would bring my younger siblings and cousins here at least once a year. We learned after a couple times here that if you want to make the best of your time you should bring a truck or SUV here. Have a family member who isn't going on the toboggan run to wait at the bottom of the run with the truck. Once you reach the bottom of the run instead of carrying the sled up the hill you can put it on the back of the truck and drive it back to the top. That would give you an extra ride in. Plus it really is a workout carrying the toboggan and after awhile you are going to be tired out. This is something everyone in the family could do together no matter how old or young you are. You can't beat the price as well . For each sled it's $13 an hour and fits four to a sled. The park entrance fee is $7 for in-state vehicles and $9 for out-of-state vehicles. Remember to dress warm for those cold days because it's always better to be prepared and you can always get rid of layers throughout the day. I would also recommend to bring a cooler and pack lunch, snacks, and drinks. That way you could have a break in between and refuel. They do have a store for simple snacks and hot chocolate as well. It's a bundle of fun but that being said you do have to be prepared for it. I think most people usually aren't. I would see a mom bring 3 little kids and that would make her being the only one carrying the sled. It takes teamwork to make this enjoyable. read more

We hit the toboggan run every year! Though we often spend more time driving than actually sledding it's still way worth it. Nothing like watching the perfect condition. (wet ice) combined with 4 big farm boys to set the fastest speed for the day of 45+ mph. Definitely worth the trip and even better if you can ski and hit the lodge too! read more

If you are thinking about going to the Toboggan Run, I would not recommend it at all. Don't waste your time. We drove an hour and a half there with our family, followed the protocol and checked in, was guaranteed we would be able to enjoy tobogganing b/c it was only 1:00pm, waited over 3 hours for a text message saying we could ride. At 4:15 we double checked with the park and the attendant called for status and they said we probably weren't going to get in, after she told us we would. We would have never waited 3 hours. Customer service is horrible and the communication between the front park attendant and the toboggan run workers is next to the worst ever! Not to mention when I talked to the supervisor and park ranger they were very rude and didn't care we traveled so far! We followed exactly what they say to do on their voicemail message and website! Worst service...very disappointed!!! read more

The Toboggan Run at Pokagon State Park in northern Indiana is not for the faint of heart. Tobogganers reach speeds of 40mph screaming down ice-laden chutes, complete with a couple of stomache-dropping dips. Once you're at the end of the run, pump up because you'll be carrying your own 50lb toboggan 1/4 mile back to the top, all uphill.
