We used Toast Catering for our wedding in June of 2025 at The Lane in downtown San Diego for about 95 people. At the time of writing this review I believe the venue has been bought out and have an exclusive contract with a different catering company, but we still got to use Toast because we booked before that happened. We originally got quotes from a few different companies and went with toast because they were on the cheaper side while still having options we wanted! They were easy to communicate with and answered emails in a (mostly) timely manner. We personalized a lot of options: beer battered fish tacos, station style set up, carne asada made gluten free, vegan options at all stations, plated salad, water carafes on each table, etc... Some of these thing we did have to confirm multiple times and the beer battered tacos were still being confirmed going into the day but all of our choices ended up happening and were amazing! People are still raving to us about the beer battered fish. They were attentive with allergies and made it a point to have options for everyone. Wedding food is often hit or miss and being honest we were expecting mediocre food but honestly everything was amazing! Ending the night with tray passed churros was truly the best part. They did start cleaning up semi early and took water glasses away a bit earlier than necessary but we understand cleaning up takes time. My husband and I just got married last week at the Japanese Friendship Garden (JFG) in Balboa Park, and we are so glad we chose Toast Catering for our wedding! Since the venue requires couples to select from a list of approved caterers, we did several tastings and ultimately chose Toast--they not only had the best food by far but were also very reasonably priced compared to others. We worked with Katlyn on our menu selections, and everything was cooked fresh on-site--including handmade tortillas! For appetizers, we chose the Kobe beef slidersv (a big hit, even amongst the kids!), Japanese eggplant, and Maryland crab cakes. For the main reception, we went with a taco bar featuring achiote chicken, carne asada, cochinita pibil, and roasted cauliflower for our vegetarian and vegan guests. Everything was absolutely delicious, and the Toast team was so thoughtful in setting aside plates of appetizers and tacos for us so we wouldn't miss out. It was really important to us to celebrate both of our cultures through food, and Toast was incredibly flexible in allowing us to do so. Since JFG requires caterers to approve any outside food vendors, Toast was very supportive of us bringing in a Vietnamese pho bar for the late-night snack and Taiwanese shaved ice for dessert. Katlyn and her team did a phenomenal job catering the food, and we received so many compliments from our guests on how amazing everything tasted. The reason for the 4-star review is that we encountered some challenges with the event rental coordination through Toast, which could have significantly increased our costs. There were miscommunications regarding setup timing and decor expectations (for example, they initially said they couldn't hang paper lanterns, then later agreed but at a cost of $30 per lantern when most vendors charge $2.50-$3/lantern). Ultimately, we decided to switch rental companies just five days before the wedding and had our wedding coordinator work directly with the new team. Additionally, several items were missing from our original rental list, which required multiple follow-ups from our coordinator. I also felt I had to double-check many of the details myself, and with so many back-and-forth emails, it became difficult to keep track of everything. These issues could have easily been resolved earlier in the process, as many of the details had been agreed upon more than six months prior to the wedding. This team worked hard behind the scenes to bring all of us 150 people fresh dishes that were as authentic as you could get! We recruited Toast Catering to be a part of our wedding reception team, and they truly delivered. With additional investments, they were able to cater to our custom menu--literally bringing all sides of our cultures to the table. For appetizers we had: - pork tonkatsu lollipops (smoked Pork Belly, Tonkatsu Sauce, Sriracha Kewpie) - ahi tuna tacos (tuna tartare, yuzu avocado puree, micro shiso) - vegetarian egg rolls. For main dishes we had: - Chopped Asian Salad - Edamame, romaine lettuce, red cabbage, carrots, green onions, Mandarin oranges, crispy noodles, ginger dressing. - Vegan chow fun - Mongolian beef and vegetable stir-fry - Butter garlic chicken wings - Asian string beans - and my favorite! Taiwanese braised pork over rice (滷肉飯). I requested that they print out a Chinese label for my side of the family, and they were able to do so. I appreciated that greatly. For desserts we had: - churros with chocolate sauce - lemon bars, mini chocolate cupcakes, berry cheesecake cups, macarons It was all a hit! The Taiwanese side of the family gave good credit to the chefs and the rest of the guests didn't leave any leftovers to take home. Toast was also able to provide coffee, tea, decaf, water and included rental services for glassware and linens. The staff were also very nice, including Luis and his teammates, who came over to bring us our own plate of appetizers while we got busy, refilling our signature drinks when we were socializing, and even saved a few churros at the end for us. From getting a quote to choosing menu items to the delivery, everything went smoothly and Katlyn stayed in touch to make sure we had all that we needed. We chose to have the food dropped off, rather than served, and it arrived on time and the delivery person set everything up nicely. We were doing a happy hour event, so we went with the finger sandwiches, make your own bruschetta, and the charcuterie tray. There was plenty of food for everyone, and it was so good. We got married at The Lane, and Toast Catering was one of the required vendors. We reached out to them after chatting with our wedding planner about our preferences and budget. While not cheap, I felt like the prices were more reasonable than other vendors on the required list, considering the type of food we wanted. Their Sales Manager Ashli was incredible from the start--highly responsive and very patient with all of our questions. We also got the chance to meet her during our tasting, and she is just a lovely person in general. The restaurant is in a business complex, but the atmosphere was calm and spa-like. We enjoyed the whole experience and had a hard time narrowing down our selections because everything was so good! Anytime we needed to adjust or add to our contract, Ashli was super accommodating. On the day of, everything was executed perfectly, even though our venue doesn't have a kitchen. I talked to Kim and she said she would pass on my info to Sarah. When I didn't hear back, I finally called Sarah. She had travel issues, but said she was willing to work with me. We got married at the Lane and all of our guests could not stop raving about how amazing the food was. Toast was one of the required vendors through the Lane and we had quite a long time to plan (around 2 years) so many changes were made throughout the process - their team was always receptive, communicative and great to work with. The only thing you really need to know about Toast is this: multiple guests told us that their food was by far the best wedding food they'd ever had. And we completely agree! Kim, Chef Sam & the entire team at Toast were wonderful every step of the way, even helping us seamlessly navigate multiple postponements forced by the COVID-19 pandemic - they were kind and easy to work with throughout that process and honored all original agreements. They coordinated our linen rentals and desserts with their partners and were a one-stop contact for us, and were very communicative throughout the process. And of course, a caterer's most important quality is their food, and Toast excelled tremendously on that front! Wedding food is so often "just OK" but as food-lovers it was important to us to have really good food at our wedding. We loved everything we tried at our tasting so much, and we were so excited when that translated to the larger quantities at the wedding itself: every single dish Toast made was superb! Our tray-passed appetizers included ahi tuna wontons, kobe beef sliders, and lumpia - the latter was a major highlight of the wedding as one of our families is Filipino, and it was such a fun (and delicious!) tribute to our culture. Toast generously agreed to make it for our wedding after we saw them post about it on Instagram after another event. It was such a hit! Every part of our buffet dinner was also excellent, from the salads, rolls, mac and cheese, and fingerling potatoes (seriously, even the basics were delicious!) all the way up to the main entrees in a slow-roasted tri-tip and pesto aioli salmon. We also loved the late night pizzas they made for us, and we sourced individual dessert shots, mini pies, and other treats from their partner, Sweet Cheeks. Recently, Toast provided catering for my daughters' wedding. Overall the food was good but many of our guests did not get any appetizers/desserts. The appetizers looked good, but they were not served in an appropriate quantity and at a reasonable time frame. There were about 150 guests and it seemed like we were constantly waiting for the next tray to come. One server will bring a tray with 6-7 pieces either veg/non-veg which will finish pretty quickly and then it takes another 10 mins or so to bring the next tray. At a time, there will always be only one tray coming out even though there were at least 2-3 servers there. Many of our guests, including her family got maybe one piece or did not get any appetizers. One of the guests even approached the kitchen and requested the servers to speed up the serve as the guests are waiting but nothing happened. The desserts looked good, but again, the number was very limited and many of our guests including her family did not get any. Assuming that at events like a wedding, caterers provide the food, including appetizers, dinner entrée and/or desserts based on the total number of guests. The number for appetizers and desserts was definitely off. Dinner was good, I heard the Chef went to a local ethnic store to get some special ingredients for one of the entrees. That needs to be appreciated. However, I don't see myself recommending Toast to any of our friends or family. Thank you. read more

Toast catered my wedding last week and people are still talking about how good the food was. They loved our tray passed apps and the meal was amazing. People have literally said it was the best food they have ever eaten at a wedding. The initial tasting was fantastic and both Sam and Kim came out and talked about if there were things we would want to change/do differently. My husband has some diet restrictions, so they were more than willing to tailor food accordingly. This personal approach was definitely why we decided to go with them (in addition to the food being amazing). The presentation of their food is also much more appealing than some of the other groups we tasted with or places I saw photos of. I also had the pipe dream of having a churro bar and chocolate fountain, and even though I don't doubt it was a pain in the ass, they made it happen. And it was phenomenal! So... you want tasty vegetarian/vegan food catered for your wedding or event? Well, unless you're willing to drop $$$$$ equivalent to the GDP of a small country in order to hire Steve Wynn's personal chef, you're SOL. Or, you could hire Toast Catering. Our friends and family are STILL raving about the amazing food from Toast! As a husband and wife team, Kim and Sam offer complete catering services. He handles all the cooking, she handles all the front end stuff. Together, it's seamless. I was drawn to Toast after seeing that they offer an actual vegetarian/vegan menu -- with TONS of options to choose from. No bullshit greasy "grilled" vegetables and pasta with jarred tomato sauce on this menu -- Sam instead offers fabulous and thoughtful creations, such as a phenomenal vegetable wellington, chickpea and cauliflower tagine, wild mushroom and spinach lasagna, and many other drool-worthy choices. They handled all the food, rentals (they use a really great family-owned rental company called Affairs Party Rentals), the bartender and servers, and set up/break down. We brought in our own alcohol and wedding cake, though I believe Toast can hook you up with both if you want. It was so awesome not having to worry about the rentals details, and Kim handled all the service and decor impeccably. Kim acts kind of like a day-of wedding coordinator, which is so helpful. If you are having trouble with the flow or timing of your wedding, use her as a resource -- she's great! To fill you in on our delicious eats, we had a totally vegetarian spread (with nary a complaint from the many carnivores in attendance), including: - roasted red pepper hummus and pita chips (vegan) - fruit platter - cheese display (which was beautifully presented) - tray passed Indian vegetarian patties (made vegan for us) - vegan lettuce wraps (made with soy crumbles) - organic spring mix salad - mushroom and spinach lasagna - roasted vegetable wellington - tian provencal (oven roasted vegetables -- vegan again) The food was so freaking good that my stomach is now rumbling from writing this review... d'oh! Our guests were very impressed, and several people came up to me and said that this was the best wedding reception food they've ever had. Sam offers a ton more vegan (and vegetarian) options, too -- amazing, considering he's not a vegan/vegetarian chef by any means. I must mention again that all this fabulous food did not come with a ridiculous price tag. It was incredibly reasonable and I would even say a bargain considering the quality of the food and service. And would you believe that Kim and Sam are incredibly sweet and easy-going people to boot! My only advice is to tell Sam how you like your food (super bold flavors or extra spicy) and he can adjust it to your liking. We ended up doing two tastings with Toast because we failed to let Sam know what we were looking for spice-wise the first time. Tell him ahead of time, do a tasting (why not enjoy the amazing food at a time when you'll actually be able to eat it?), and you and your guests will be so happy you choice so wisely. read more

My new wife and I had our wedding scheduled for 10.2.10 at the MoPA in Balboa Park, and they asked us to use their preferred vendors for catering. I'm often leery of going that route, but as I'd soon find, we hit the jackpot with Toast. We scoured through the 10 or so options, weeding out those we felt wouldn't hit the mark, but right from the moment we saw Sam's website, we knew we'd found our man. They cook everything onsite, they don't use frozen repacked foods and sell them as their own, and they will even give you suggestions of what to look out for in your caterer, in the event you DON'T go with them. He has classic Southern French training, but is savvy in SW cuisine and has a knack for putting his twist on everything he prepares. It was important for me to find a caterer for our wedding who understood and shared my passion for food, and wouldn't get offended when we wanted things a certain way. Sam is professional, thoughtful, creative and driven, especially when it comes to his food. It was also a dealbreaker that I had to have food at my wedding that people would love, because let's face it, wedding food generally sucks, plain and simple. Its large scale and soulless, and I've never left a wedding talking about the dinner. That all changed the night we got married. When we did our tasting, at my request, he prepared two variations of each dish so we could choose which version we liked the best. He even quickly learned one of my dishes to be included on the menu, and he nailed it 100%, sight unseen (or untasted)! We had over 140 guests, and our passed selections were: Caprese skewers, curried-butternut squash bisque shooters, & open face "Tamales" over fried corn cakes. Then we served my spinach/strawberry/goat cheese salad before the entrees, which included: Hoisin-Beer braised short ribs, or Alaskan halibut with blood orange buerre blanc, both served over saffron mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus, or for the veggies we had butternut squash ravioli with sage butter and tomato coulis. I've never heard so many compliments over the food at a wedding, and I'm still getting rave reviews. Sam will work within your budget to make it work for you, and try to help you be creative even when your budget isn't as big as you'd like. He charges a very minimal service charge comparatively, and the staff he brought to my big day crushed it. They even helped my father in-law load all of the extra booze after the night was over...and there was a lot of it! In the end, Sam and his team from Toast catering were amazing, and I'd recommend them 100x over. And to the guy who gave the poor review based on a phone call, without even using Toast, I would remind you that Sam's not rude, he's just French. Get over it! read more

I said "I do" this past Saturday, November 9th, and it was the best decision I ever made. Another great choice I made was saying "I do" to Toast Catering, and having them cater our reception. We had a DIY at Levyland Estate in Carlsbad. A DIY wedding is no small feat for my new husband and I, who have regular 40+-hour/week jobs, and were planning this wedding on our own, along with a close cousin. Toast's Kim and Sam Benham and staff were amazing. From the very beginning, with initial e-mail correspondence, Kim was our main point-of-contact, trying to figure out our needs and the kind of reception we wanted to have. They were absolutely patient and kind with us, and kept everything absolutely organized. The tasting at their La Mesa location was a fun experience, where we were able to meet their chefs and one of their bartenders. Toast can also hire on a party rental company to handle your tables/chairs/linens, etc., (anything you can ever think of); the group they hired for us was Affairs Party Rental, I believe, and that group of gentlemen was so professional and sweet; I enjoyed working with them the day before the wedding. They were timely and great. The day of the reception was incredible. I've included a photo of our set-up at Levyland, handled by Kim and her staff. One of my favorite servers was Teresa, who made sure that our bridal party was taking part in appetizers and drinks while we were taking photos (they really don't overlook any detail and make sure that the bridal party is able to enjoy the food/drinks midst all the crazy excitement). Thank you so much, Teresa! I also had no idea that the wedding cake that our close friend had made for us, had basically flown out of her car in transit. Who was there to save the day? One of Toast Catering's chefs! I had no clue there was this behind-the-scenes excitement until my friend pulled me aside and showed me the play-by-play of what could have been a wedding cake disaster. This is the kind of group you'd be working with if you hire on Toast Catering: people who will go that extra mile to make your wedding as smooth as possible. There was no doubt that we received rave reviews for the food (FYI our menu included appetizers of kobe beef sliders with smoked gouda cheese; tomato burger; and a pancit noodle with shrimp shot. The main meal was a beautiful spinach salad; mango-glazed salmon; hoisin-braised short ribs; vegetable wellington; mixed vegetables; and roasted red baby potatoes). It was all a hit. I still have dreams about those kobe beef sliders and the hoisin-braised short ribs. I am forever grateful to you all, especially Kim. The catering/reception set-up was the one thing I felt most confident about and trusted you all, and you didn't let us down. Thank you so much for everything. Not a single person at our wedding was disappointed by the food and service provided by Toast Catering, Chef Sam, or Kim! Like wise my wife and I were absolutely enamored with the quality of service they provided through out the process, the flexible menu, display, and rental options, and the mind blowing unique qualities of their food. Both Sam and Kim appeared at the wedding with a fully trained, professional staff and made sure that every station operated at optimal efficiency while also making sure that my wife and I were especially catered to by the staff. Sam and Kim navigated the busy venue checking on staff, guests, and my wife & I constantly through out the evening. We felt looked after! You can't go wrong in hiring Toast Catering for your upcoming event. Food and service are top notch and they are the epitome of excellent service. From their back end team to the day of team, they are the best all around. As a wedding planner, they make my job easy. They're always there to answer any questions I have (in a very timely manner), and are there on the day of to make sure the guests (and the planner) are taken care of. On both ends, they work very efficiently without hesitation. Anytime I needed something, they were always there to help. On event days, I also appreciate how the team stays back to make sure all trash is removed off site and will check in with me to confirm that. It's nice to know I can always count of their staff to take care of this so I'm not left behind picking up at the end of the evening. It helps that the day of team at Toast always knows the drill!
