The baby of our family was adamant, this was the studio he wanted to go to. Although his brothers had been training at another studio for years and were already black belts, the baby liked this studio. The studio was not modern, it did not have cool music, it did not have any of those things that other studios had and used that seemed to appeal to the customers. Due to life's circumstances, the other studio was not as convenient so we decided to give this studio a shot and have been incredibly pleased. My baby knew quality and heart. The Grandmaster, a 9th degree black belt (he ranked up since an earlier reviewer's reference to 8th Dan/degree black belt), LOVES the kids and LOVES what he does. He is serious during the trainings and really gets on the kids. If you are not used to the style, you may be surprised at first because he says things like "are you a baby?" but you know he is just razzing the kids and none of the kids take offense. They don't take offense because they feel TOTALLY adored by the Grandmaster. After the practice he frequently goes into his office and brings out a bag of candy. The kids run up to him without a word and sit in a wiggling, giggling single file line and take a candy. They are often given cloth stars and patches for their uniforms when they do well. The Grandmaster loves the kids and it really shows, it REALLY shows. A business needs to be profitable to meet overhead. That is understood. However, some (many) of these taekwondo studios are really greedy. They surcharge double/triple their cost for their goods. They manipulate the kids to serve as their free labor to market their school to their friends with cheap prizes. Remember, once you begin this sport, if you continue, the studio will make anywhere from $2000-$4000 per year, per student from upgrades in uniform, gear, regular class fees, belt test fees, etc. This is for life. So, where do I want to spend my money? I want to spend my money where I see it as an investment. The Grandmaster adores the kids and they know it. They feel noticed and seen. He PERSONALLY teaches the class and works with EACH of the student. I am investing in my kids and in a person who will positively impact the lives of other kids. I don't want to feel like a cash cow being milked by the taekwondo studio, which I felt like at times at other studios. There is a sense of community here. And, I thoroughly recommend it. read more

Master Kim is an amazing Tae Kwon Do teacher. He has the ability to inspire kids as young as 3-4! His white belt students have just as much fun as his amazing black belt competitors. He is the best in his class, coaching Olympic teams and himself being a black belt 9 ( very few in the United States are ranked black belt 9!) All students work as a team and encourage each other. I could not be more impressed with Master Kim and our young growing family is so lucky to have found him! You can also train with your child if you are interested in starting TKD as an adult! Me, my wife, my daughter (4) and son (7) have all taken family and me classes at this DoJang and it's been a huge part of our lives. I recommend this studio to anyone who is interested in martial arts, young or adult. Master Kim teaches every class, with a team of third and fourth degree blackbelts assisting. We tried the free class first and registered immediately after trial. My daughter really loves the class and her classmates. Everyone is nice and very supportive. I was worried that she would be too young... 3 years and 8months but she did a good job in the class. It's good that my husband and daughter could take the class at the same time. Our son has been attending Chung Do Kwan for nearly four years. In that time he has not only attained his black belt, but gained confidence, coordination, discipline and a strong sense of respect for others. Master Kim is not just a master at Taekwondo, but a master at instilling in kids the value of persistence, hard work and humility by modeling those virtues himself. He really cares about the kids and will gladly go out of his way to help them do their best. Where do I begin? I've known Grandmaster Kim for a little over 20 years. Trained under him as well. After all these years, he is still the honest and hard training instructor he is. Within the last 20 years I have only seen him twice, and of both times he's always been that father figure to me. The thing I love and admire most about him is that he cares and teaches with such a passion and not just because he has the title of 8th degree. Always open to other martial artist of other styles as long as there is respect as it should be. If you want to learn REAL taekwondo, then Grandmaster Kim is there to teach you. My daughters both go to Chung Do. I cannot express how much they have gained from this DoJang. This is a place to learn self control and discipline but it is also a safe place for them. They feel welcome and the other students make them feel that they have friends. Grand Master Kim is a true Korean master and teaches traditional Tae Kwon Do. He personally teaches the classes instead of having students teach which is rare in LA. He truly enjoys what he does and it shows in his students. This is the real McCoy. I had my daughter in another school, first in Santa Monica, and then inMar Vista, and the Masters rarely taught the students directly. In master Kim's class, he is the only one doing the teaching - and I've been amazed to watch her progress as well as the the other young students. They are all very discipline and the students love their classes. And very class is different. Sometime there is sword work, kicking, sparring - the students never know what's coming next and it keeps them on their toes. Next summer, there is even going to be a trip to KOrea to train with Grand Masters. And Master Kim really cares and enjoys the children - that's probably what I like about his teaching most. read more

My two boys have been coming to this dojo for over 2 years. They are 4 and 7. Master Kim is not only an amazing, thoughtful teacher, but he really cares about the kids. Unlike most dojos, he (an 8th Degree Black Belt and former Olympic coach), teaches the kids himself. He perfects their forms without criticizing them and pushes them while encouraging them. He truly cares about the kids and about the parents. As a parent with young siblings, I am always grateful that he provides puzzles and other toys to distract the younger siblings while the other kids are training. He encourages parents to watch their kids and provides open classes where parents and their children can take classes together.
