I agreed to go without any expectations, except for having a great time with friends who have been and Mamou's international reputation for its genre of music. I was amazed by the experience, to say the least! Fred's Lounge is small, intimate and its music broadcasts live every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to around 2 p.m. on KVPI AM radio out of nearby Ville Platte, Louisiana there every Saturday. There was no cover, people there were friendly and embraced visitors as family. Even a wall flower could not help rump-rocking in their seat, clapping to the beat, stomping their feet, or even being coerced to cut-a-rug with a perfect stranger, while embracing the unique Cajun music rhythms. The band that day was local famed Don Fontenot and the Louisiana Boys. I could not help admiring the bass player's guitar strap made out of alligator hide. The craftsmanship was incredible! Also Don Fontenot, the accordion player's passion and creativity was spot on! The band played traditional music in Cajun French, however at times they played American classics like Proud Mary. They even played La Grange by Z. Z. Top in both English and Cajun French. However the most memorable song was "Ride the Donkey" with a guest performance from a local lady in the lounge, who he-hawed better than the best Jenny! I am certain it wasn't her first time performing this song! If you are a music enthusiast, looking for a fun destination trip or a simply a unique memorable experience in Louisiana, Fred's Lounge is a must!

We happened into Backstreet Lounge last night on the recommendation of one of our neighbors, who…read moreenjoys going there for live music. It wasn't crowded at all, but this *was* the night before Thanksgiving, so that made sense. That said, there was a decent group of regulars that seemed to love the place. And we can see why. As the other reviewer mentioned, this bar caters to an older crowd (baby boomers with a sprinkling of Gen X), which isn't to say that younger people wouldn't be welcomed ... but the shenanigans that sometimes comes with being younger would be out of place here. Don, Jared and the Konspiracy was the band last night, and they did a fine job of playing classic rock standards that kept the dance floor busy. The food at the back (jambalaya) was a really nice touch, and the bartender did a wonderful job of keeping everyone topped up with good cheer. We're glad to have discovered this locals hangout and we'll definitely be back.

My favorite "hole in the wall"…read more I'm someone who loves good music and good people. Both can always be found at backstreet! As a former bartender, I am not a fan of college crowd bars or bars where the owner is wasted and causing drama. Im not a fan of drama, period. I like an older crowd that you can have fun with, drink with, dance with, etc. The owner is awesome, as are the regulars. When the dancing gets going, they salt the floor! Cap'n & Gayle do karaoke on Friday nights and it's the absolute best in town!!! if you're into karaoke you have to check it out! Not to mention, Friday nights, band nights, game nights and special events they have food cooked. I know you're thinking "yea, ok bar food". No. I'm talking home-cooked crock-pot food. I will bet that the chicken & dumplings are the best 99.9% of people that try them have EVER had. For LSU football they've got a projector screen and the game going on loud. Commercial breaks they put on 98.1 or the fight song, etc. Definitely my favorite place to watch the game. Long review but there's so much greatness about this place I know I'm forgetting to mention a million things. Bartenders are wonderful (especially Leslie!) bands are great, karaoke is great, drinks are great! Food is phenomenal as are the people you'll meet!
