If they had made any attempt to apologize for the debacle, or to explain that they have changed their communication policies with future customers, I would have updated my review immediately. Unfortunately, this never happened. What has occurred since I wrote the original review is pressured phone calls to remove and/or revise, and an attempt to intimidate via "contacting an attorney." What I have removed is the "tl;dr" portion. Begin review: At first, our experience with Highland Lakes Storage was excellent. We needed a short term solution for a small space for about a month when my father passed away. The owner was incredibly friendly, easy to work with and amenable. We used the storage facility for about 2 weeks. We had put down a deposit and paid for one month. We closed out the unit, and it was perfectly clean. We awaited our deposit to be returned. The information we had given in our contract was our current address, as we were not moving--we were just storing my deceased father's items. We gave no indication that we were moving to a new address, or that our current address would change. After waiting for a month, my husband called the owner. It took some time to get in touch. They don't always answer during their business hours, and it can be confusing as they use their home phone for their business phone. Once he got in touch the first time, the wife owner indicated that we were supposed to send an SASE because "they figure that everyone who has a storage unit is moving somewhere, and they never know where to send the check." Yes. This is what my husband was told. And no, this information was not provided up front transparently. My husband sent the owners the letter with our rental information, the information regarding what was discussed on the phone call and an SASE. Two weeks later, the letter was returned due to an insufficient address. I received this returned letter, and called the storage facility. This time, I got the husband owner. I explained, with frustration, our entire ordeal in attempting to get our deposit back, and how ridiculous this endeavor had become. I was told by him that there was no way he or his wife could have possibly given the address we had been given, and that my husband must have called some other storage facility (despite the fact that somehow, my husband had learned that he had to send a SASE to them.) Instead of attempting to defuse the issue, and offering to send the deposit back to me (and just deducting the cost of a stamp from the deposit), the husband owner decided to engage in a heated battle of "You're wrong (me), you're lying (me), you don't know what you're talking about (me)", and generally treating a prior client like crap. I asked him to just send me the check. He said no. I told him I'd send him the SASE, and asked him to give me his correct address. He refused and told me to get it off my contract. I explained very clearly that he will be sending me my deposit. After that action was completed, I will be writing a detailed description of these events to the BBB. After that, I will be writing the same letter and submitting it to all relevant organizations, be it the Chamber of Commerce, etc. Please beware. I only dealt with them for 1 month and a deposit issue. I have no idea what they are like if you are with them month after month. They may turn out to be problematic after several months of using their service or not at all until you try to get your deposit back. One additional thing: This company has no physical address; only a PO Box. I never recommend doing business with any company that has no physical address--or refuses to give one. (In this case, they refuse to give one.) You can't send certified/registered letters, or visit them in person to make your complaint. You can only call them and make an appointment to meet with you on the storage facility property.
