He was always innovating with cool new twists on traditional cocktails like the Manhattan, asking me about my tastes and then coming up with something interesting, sometimes with a Nordic-inspired twist, like using aquavit (and one of his drinks was called a "Mannerheim Sour"). I knew nothing about cocktails and he pretty much taught me whatever I know -- which still isn't much, so I'm not going to pretend I know what I'm talking about -- but I enjoyed reconnecting with him at this quirky, off-the-beaten-path gem of a new bar in Helsinki, which pretty much feels like it's straight out of Brooklyn, with vinyl records for sale in the back and vintage 1970s movie posters. I also enjoyed chatting with another of the bartenders, Mikko; everyone was very friendly. They have an intriguing selection of beers (my personal favorite is the EloWehnä from the Finnish Keisari brewery), nice wines, and of course you can ask Chris for cocktail suggestions. Giving this bar even more atmosphere is the fact that apparently the space, which was part of an old meatpacking plant here, used to be exactly where the meatpacking workers' sauna was, and the green tile behind the bar is apparently from the original sauna area. Oh, I almost forgot: speaking of meat, also try the house-made pastrami sandwich, I thought it was excellent. There is outdoor seating for those endless summer nights. The whole courtyard area here, Teurastamo, where the bar is, is worth checking out; speaking of more meat, the B-Smokery barbecue joint is just next door as well.

The cocktail menu is fun, telling a story about each drink and leaning heavily into their detective theme. Drinks were great and each came with a fun amuse-bouche that helped enhance the flavor of the cocktail. There are no prices on the menu, but my cocktail was €15, which I felt was fair given the level of detail that goes into the drinks. The bartender was nice, answered all of our questions, and made excellent cocktails! We had a great time and I definitely recommend checking this place out to anyone in the city.

It's important to note that Chihuahua Julep is phone free; no pictures, no scrolling! The bar is small and it can take a while to get in; likewise, the cocktails can take some time to make, which our server warned us about beforehand. But the cocktails are great, very labor-intensive and beautifully made. The bar specializes in spirits from the Americas, so it's a tequila, mezcal, and whiskey heavy menu. I would highly recommend a visit to Chihuahua Julep if you're looking for a bar that takes its time and favors quality over quantity.

These cocktails were boozy, yet I was still able to taste all the notes within each cocktail. Even better? The bartenders were friendly and engaged in small talk. Great demeanor and I could see that they love what they do. I'd love to have a bar like this back in the city. Something unique and different from the masses. I was also very impressed by the wine list that had really good organic and nature wines. The service was in general extremely slow and while friendly it was not great. 10 minute wait to be seated, drinks list for aperitifs handed over when too late (when several dishes already appeared). I could see that they were trying their best but there seemed to be a total lack of coordination. I also felt the food come to slowly, I don't need it to be a high pace but a dinner taking 4.5 hours is a bit too much. The food was in general beautiful and they had a story going through the menu but many dishes were just a bit boring. Out of the 10 dishes, 3 were really good, 2 were good, and the rest were just ok.
