I concur with the previous reviewer entirely - a relaxed shop on Chiswick High Road with a huge…read morevariety of almost exclusively French wines (yes, you guessed it, it's a French chain). On the two occasions I've been in, service and knowledge really has been excellent - one example being when I went in and wanted an excellent bottle of Bordeaux for a special anniversary. Not really knowing what was good and what wasn't - I specified a price of up to about £40. The assistant's eyes lit up: not because it was a guaranteed £40 sale, but because I was trusting her judgement and knowledge - the one she recommended was actually £26, but she indicated it was better than the other, more expensive ones. She also gave advice on decanting it to get the best possible flavours and for how many years it would keep. I also left with it beautifully wrapped and ready to give to the intended person. Highly recommended and in my experience, certainly better than Oddbins.
My favourite game - go into any branch of Nicolas and ask them to recommend a good bottle of…read moreItalian wine. You'll get a withering Gallic look and the response "But, sir, there is no such thing". That's because Nicolas is a specialist wine merchant that stocks virtually only French wine, although other regions do feature in modest quantities. They also stock spirits, whiskies and champagnes. Their knowledge is excellent and you'll never come away disappointed with their recommendations. Great for picking up oddities, for example Rose Liqueur (which by the way makes an excellent aperitif with Champagne)

I can't speak for all the Jeroboams shops - I've only ever been to this one, and even then, just once - but I was rather surprised to find that not only did this branch have a fine selection of wines, they also had a great selection of spirits, including a certain Japanese whisky which led me to this shop. Despite the seemingly posh sounding name, and its location in west London, I found prices in this shop more than fair, even for the hard-to-find whisky. Tom, the person manning the shop the day I visited, certainly knows his stuff. He's not just enthusiastic about wine, but also spirits and where you can enjoy them, which is why you can find craft gins, quality tonic water and other kinds of alcohol in addition to what Jeroboams is known for - wine. He's also the guy behind their Twitter feed, which, if you're a fan of good alcohol and happen to live nearby (or even if you don't, I'd encourage you to follow so that you know what special offers and tastings are on, or, in my case, when certain vintages have arrived! Definitely a place to go to if you're looking for sound advice and something special.. or even if you're not.

Online shop frontage only, as I understand it - also definitely worth speaking to them if you have an event to cater, as there is a sister business, Forkful Foods. Though this offie doesn't have a spectacular selection, it's pretty damn good for being around the block from my flat. You can find some more obscure items like Luxardo here, but nothing like Chartreuse or crème de violette. Still, essentials seem reasonably priced, and the employees are friendly and generous - kicking in an extra lime cordial at no extra charge on top of the half-dozen bottles I purchased. Without doubt, I'll be around.
