(I received a 30 day trial as a gift from my buddy Jojo.) Since then I have been coming about twice a week. I previously studied judo and jiu jitsu at another nearby club in Claremont. I'm 38 years old and work full time. I attend Tinguinha's academy primarily for exercise, self defense, and fun. The facility is clean and space is abundant. There is a restroom, changing room, and shower. The front lobby has shirts, gi's, patches, and DVDs for sale. There is plenty of hand sanitizer, wipes, and cleaning supplies to maintain a germ free environment. The classes are well organized and primarily taught by 6 stripe black belt Mauricio Tinguinha. He has a seemingly never ending wealth of knowledge that he shares in each class. The class structure usually begins with warm ups and stretching, then a technique or two, position training, and then randori (sparring). There is an extensive group of individuals to work with from white collar professionals, health care workers, law enforcement employees, students, etc. There is an abundance of black belts, brown, purple, blue and white belts to help you with your technique. What drew me to this club is how everyone is willing to help. There's great tournament style training throughout the year to help prepare you mentally and physically for the big day. There are plenty of students here who have competed at the highest level and were victorious. I have a 7 and 9 year old who have been attending class here for the past 3 years. I entered them into jiu jitsu for self defense and to help boost their confidence. They have a higher level of self worth and respect for others, thanks to the kids class here. I've been coming to the academy for almost 1.5 years and Professor Tinguinha, Scott, Ben and all the other coaches there are awesome! They break it down step by step and with different angles to show you how to do everything. They explain not only what to do but why you are doing it. Not only are the instructors great but the other students are as well. All of them are respectful and always willing to lend a hand if you have a question. Some basic info about the school: Basically all BJJ classes taught by 3rd degree black belt under Carlos Gracie Jr. -- Mauricio "Tinguinha" Mariano -basically the master/inventor of spider guard. -he's also head of the BJJ dept. or the new UFC training center. To my knowledge, the school is the original Gracie Barra "Orange County" before Gracie Barra is what is today (extensive amount of schools in every city). So yeah, this place is super-legitimate old school/original BJJ. The facility- Its big with 2 mat areas. One big white mat and another tournament style mat area. Also heavy bags are up for the muay thai classes (also very good.) 1 bathroom but also has a separate changing area with separate shower. a bench for spectators. The Classes- 7 days a week, kids program, Muay Thai, and women's self defense also offered. The environment- Super friendly, family style. Its like the mom and pop restaurant except of enjoying your favorite avocado teriyaki bacon burger, you're eating plate lunch of BJJ. The people- No egos. Everyone there is there to help one another. Wide range of heights/weights to train with. I live in Irvine and commute about 30 mins to an hour to train here. read more

I first met Tinguinha in Brazil training BJJ. He was already a black and was considered one of the best on the mat at Gracie Barra. I guess my review is as biased as it gets, because now I am an instructor here. But when I first started here in 2007, I knew this was something I wanted to be a part of. Back then, I was close to 190 lbs, with weak knees and tons of unhealthy habits. Today I walk at 145 lbs and I feel better than I felt in high school. This review is strictly for Tinguinha's teaching--I trained under him when he was in Anaheim, so I don't know how the facilities at the new place are (I bet they're outstanding, though). Tinguinha is one of the most decent people you'll ever meet. His style of teaching benefited me greatly. He got me to focus more on solid, basic techniques rather than trying to swarm on my opponents with pure strength. (He would tell me: "You see a closed door, and instead of trying to open it and walk through, you just want to smash right through it.") He won't allow you to be lazy or sloppy, but he's not going to rip your head off and humiliate you if you don't succeed, either. Excellent sensei. read more

I've been taking a fitness class at Tinguinha BJJ Academy taught by Jeff N. for the past 8 months and I can say w/o reservation that he teaches a crazy-good, muscle building, boot camp style class. It's only 1 hour long but I always leave in a full sweat and feeling really pumped! I swear his workouts cover every muscle in your body. Taking this class has significantly improved my overall strength, balance, coordination and endurance and is good for all ages and fitness levels. So if you're looking for an instructor who really cares about your fitness and a great class at a price that doesn't break the bank, I highly recommend this place! I am a 55 year old physician who after 6 years of jiujitsu at another place went for one month here because my adult son asked if I would do it with him. I had no intention of staying longer than one month. Over four years later I look forward to going to class. It is obvious professor cares about his students and we are one large family. Tinguinha is by far the best BJJ instructor I've ever known. He is the reason so many of his students medal at major competions. I've been training there fours years and the brotherhood is unmatched. It all starts at the top with Tinguinha. We have big guys, some are really big guys. We also have some extremely fast guys. The bottom line is Tinguinha builds each student's foundation. How can a new white belt do some complicated move when he/she doesn't know the basics such as position or how to learn to defend against higher belts first? Once Tinguinha builds your foundation, he then builds your walls. It's like a building that's only as solid as the foundation it's sitting on. Tinguinha has eyes on the side and in the back of his head. He knows every single one of his students strengths and weaknesses better than they do. He matches people up correctly to improve their weaknesses. He makes sure everyone is in a safe environment but I promise you he will bring out the best in you. He has never once rediculed a student but he pushes each person to reach their potential day after day. He gives individual consultations to each student to go over their progress of what they're doing well and what needs improvement. I'm one of the oldest guys and I'm treated like a brother by everyone. I'm a purple belt that moved from San Diego to Anaheim. I tried so many schools and at one point I had three memberships simultaneously in the Yorba Linda/Brea area. it took me a short time to realize Tinguinha was the school for me.
