This place used to be a tattoo parlor and it shows in the layout. It might not be optimum for all shows but I kind of liked it for the Midwest and Beyond graffiti show I attended with some fellow Detroiters. One of the tattooing rooms was the cofounder's studio that he had opened up as a chill spot and it was fun trading sketches in black books with others who sought a place away from the hubbub of the main room. Connor Degnan's Art was on full display, too, and it was a fun side quest from the main exhibit. A back room also had some brightly colored pieces that seemed to be part of the permanent or semi-permanent collection. Turnout was just right; the room was filled up but not overstuffed to the point of claustrophobia. The curators maximized the wall space with a lively and varied collection. Quality varied but there were definitely some standout pieces. To me the big problem with reproducing graffiti style art in a gallery is it loses a lot of its vitality stripped of its proper lawless context. It loses a lot of its street cred if you take it off the streets. Nevertheless it was fun to see and a good crowd to see it. A DJ played old school hip hop and the snack table was legit. The rap letters over the front door with the gallery name was a nice touch; I feel like that's not just for this show and is gonna be around. I hope so. Hope this gallery is gonna stick around, too. It could really go either way with this type of establishment.

Earlier this year, Washington Street Gallery moved to S. Main, and they're now abbreviating the…read moregallery to WSG, which I guess makes sense seeing as they're not on Washington anymore. The space is bright and clean, with white walls, hardwood floors and lots of light. They offer a mix of paintings, sketches and prints as well as three-dimensional art, ranging from geometric abstracts to landscapes to whimsical metal people sculptures made from appliances. All are made by regional artists. I'm not really their target audience since I can't really afford hundreds of dollars for original art, but they did have some nice smaller prints at prices the little people could afford. I was tempted by a few smaller pieces that were under $40.

Nice place to just go and leisurely stroll through while you're in downtown Wyandotte. It's a great place to see the work of local artists, and you can get pleasently lost in an afternoon of viewing art on all three levels. They also have great openings and showings. A friend and I sweated our way through both floors of the gallery because they had some interesting pieces, but it was cooler outside in the breeze. That being said, this gallery has an eclectic selection of paintings, prints and sculptures, including some lifelike and life-size sculptures and more abstract pieces. Some of the "art" was so immersed in pop culture (a painting based on the Family Guy cartoon? Puh-leez...) that I thought it was kind of junky. However, I liked a lot of the paintings and almost all the sculptures, including some great bronze sculptures by Yuroz. The building itself is pretty cool, too. There's a glass atrium at one side where some sculptures are on display, and there's a spiral staircase up to the second floor.
