Cadbury Easter egg donut. It was very sweet.
Ashley G.

This is my go to Tim Hortons, not by choice, but mostly because it is close to home. The drive thru can get a little crazy during peak times, especially since you have to drive through a busy parking lot to get into the drive thru lane, and dodge pedestrians running for their bus. If you have been to this Tim Hortons, then you know what I mean, lol. Drive thru can be a hit or miss. Sometimes its quick, other times it's not, so if you are in a rush, I'd skip this location. Food/coffee is consistent and the staff is pretty knowledgeable and quick to tell you if they are out of an item.

This Dao Cafe is co-located with a Tealive. However, they also sell their own drinks (mostly coffee…read moreand tea beverages like lattes and cappuccinos). They sell lots of fancy pastries, with the prices to match, lol. I've tried the Lychee Rose cake $11.50. It was served in a round container the size of a small drinking glass. The lychee and Rose flavours were pronounced, but the rose dominated and I would have preferred the reverse. The top had a light sprinkling of tiny real rose petal pieces. The cake was sponge cake and was soft and moist. The cream was airy and fluffy. It was tasty, but a bit pricey for the portion size. I've also tried their Korean macarons ($3.90 each). Korean macarons are like French macarons except there's a lot of filling and it's a thick buttery cream. I'm not a fan of the filling. It's too rich for me. However, if you like these types of macarons these are well made. My overall assessment is that the desserts look pretty, the taste is good, but you're paying more for the aesthetics. Service is courteous and efficient. The cafe is also really pretty inside. Very Instagramble ;) It's in a plaza, so lots of free parking. (25)

I love the first Dao location that opened in Ottawa…read more Maybe I expected too much for this location which is a a 3*, A-OK, in my books. We went on a Saturday around 5p. The seating and tables weren't being attended to, so there were crumbs at and on every available seating/table combo. The garbage in the seating area was overflowing. Customer service at the cash was cheerful and reasonably efficient. The barrista failed us, as, with only our order, it took a while to receive it. My flat white, which should be smooth with a slightly sweet finish was bitter and acidic. Sigh. Lots of people seemed to be enjoying themselves. The pastries are as stunning and tasty as at the other location. This location is also quite beautiful with an airy feel. Nice space for a chat. The seating along the window is likely best suited to singles, or under thirty crowd, as, to have a conversation, you either have to put a leg up on the bench or crane your torso and neck. I found it a bit uncomfortable. And since that was just about the only seating left...I'm wondering if others may have had similar experiences. This location is much closer to home for us... maybe I'll keep my Doa fix for when I'm in the west end of the city.

Woohoo! A bona fide French bakery (ain't no stinkin' Quebecois in here)!…read more Man am I a pastry addict. It's a problem. But one that I can't feed (oh the pun) in good ol' 'merica. And don't you dare say that Canada is in America! Only the USA has freedom! (but no good bakeries. /sigh) Food, in order of awesomeness: 1. Fruit Tart --- it is almond cream deliciousness with fruit and glaze on top - absolutely amazing - my aunt gets a full size tart for every holiday and every holiday I try and figure out how to nudge my grandparents, cousins, uncle, aunt, and my guilt out of the way so I can eat it all. 2. donut-shaped puff pastry with hazelnut (i think?) cream --- puff pastries are second to none in my book and this one is pretty good. Got it late in the day but the cream was still fluffy, fresh, and on point. Not too sweet and very dairy. The pastry itself got a tad dry but hey, what do you expect coming in an hour before closing? 3. strawberry filo dough basket --- I really like how this isn't as sweet as you think it's going to be. In fact, most of the sweetness is coming from the fruit. Really nice light, refreshing, tasty treat. 4. Meringue with hazelnut cream and chocolate --- Woowee! Here is the sweetness. Mah goodness. The meringue was well-done though not 100% melting in your mouth. Very sweet. The cream is generous but at a perfect ratio to the meringue. Chocolate glaze is good. 5. Chocolate Eclaire --- Didn't know this was chocolate when my cousin and I got it so that was already a surprise. But even more of a surprise is the deep cocoa dark chocolate taste of the creme. The more you have, the sweeter it starts to taste but it's almost more bitter than sweet. Surrounding pastry was tasty, airy, good consistency. 6. Creme Brulee --- Maybe I'm a pitiful Yank but I'm not used to my creme brulee tasting like a very eggy custard. Plus it had a very un-set consistency and the top didn't have a great stained glass surface. My least favorite of the bunch. I also had a sandwich on baguette. I really miss these sandwiches from my previous trips to the old world. The baguette was on point, good crust, good innards, smelled good, tasted great. They have a few quiches but I couldn't handle ordering a slice with all the pastries. I'm now regretting it. They looked good. Also you can get marinated meat and poultry in vacuum sealed bags. Too bad I don't live 'round here because I want to try all of this. This store also has a humble selection of French food imports. And those extremely awesome candies with the rose seed in the middle. The lady at the counter was an interesting breed between aloof, efficient, warm, and playful. I walked away confused but happy. If you are in a bind and need to bring over a desert (or two... or three...) to a dinner party, there is no better thing than grabbing these pastries. I'm told you should call in advance. Or, if you just want to get your fix of French pastries, this is a good place to do it.

The price of the food at this location was very reasonable considering the exceptional quality of the food. The service at this location was excellent because the staff here are very friendly, helpful, professional, and respectful and the staff quickly prepare your meal as well so you can be in and out of the store quickly. The cleanliness at this location was excellent and there were no major spills or safety hazards. I was somewhat excited when I heard about the first COBS Bread opening up in Ottawa a few years…read moreago. However, my excitement fizzled somewhat when I found out it was going to be in Barrhaven. Nothing wrong with Barrhaven, it's just a part of town that I rarely find myself in. And honestly, I wasn't about to make a special trip down there to visit a chain bakery, even it was a new-to-me chain. So I never went. Fast forward a few years, and in the midst of the Covid-19 Pandemic, they opened up a location in Orleans with little fanfare. I didn't hear about it on social media and only discovered it as I was driving to visit my parents and saw it out of the corner of my eye. Since I'm in Orleans like all the time, I finally got to try COBS Bread. Overall, it was good for a chain bakery. The prices for the croissants are a bit high in my opinion, but scones and their "teatime" pull-apart brioche are reasonable priced. So COBS Bread is the Canadian branch of Bakers Delight, an Australian chain. Most of their Canadian locations started out west in Alberta and British Columbia, but they have since moved east to Ontario. We don't have too many chain bakeries here in Ottawa, the other one that I can think of is Michel's Baguette. COBS Bread is definitely not as fragrant a bakery as Michel's Baguette, but they have similarities. There's a lot of selection. I ended up getting a Wild Blueberry and Custard Teatime ($6.49), 2 cheddar cheese and chives scones ($2.65 each) and 2 chocolate croissants ($3.75 each). The Blueberry and Custard Teatime was good. It's essentially a brioche, pull-apart style. It was soft and moist. I didn't taste too much custard though, just blueberry. It wasn't overly sweet. I enjoyed it. The cheddar scone was also good. It wasn't all that fluffy, but still tasty. Not too much cheddar flavour though. I didn't try the croissants because these were a treat for my little nieces, but I found them small for the price. Service was friendly. The bakery is really small and it's hard to see the selection when other customers are blocking the display. The bakery is in a plaza so there's lots of free parking.

Then we noticed their "baked yesterday" section. They had 2 chocolate almond croissants wrapped in a bag for $1. Hello? $0.50 for a chocolate almond croissant? I'm in! They looked and felt fresh to me, not all dry and stale. They don't have prices on all their items, so I'm not sure how much everything else cost individually, but the total with taxes was a little over $5 for everything. Staff were really nice, when one of the ladies saw me putting the butter tart into one of the paper bags they had out, she asked me if I wanted a box. The place also looked very clean. The plain croissant was pretty good. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The pecan butter tart filling was soft and gooey. The crust was ok, but I'm not usually a fan of pie crust. The chocolate almond croissants did not taste day-old to me at all. It was still crispy on the outside (despite being in a plastic bag) and flaky. The inside was full of almond paste and there were chocolate spots throughout. Such a deal for $0.50! My mom loves pastries, so I'm glad to find a place not too far from my parents' place. I might have to stop here occasionally to pick up some treats before coming over. Everyone loves guests bearing gifts, lol. The bakery has no signage on the actual building (at least not at the time of the writing of this review), the sign is in the parking lot. Look for that sign!

I recently ordered a cake and the flavour of the icing was horrendous. No flavour…read more After many attempts (four) to contact the manager she finally called me back. The manger indicated she'd look into the batch of icing, taste test it. After a week I still hadn't heard from her so I tried to follow up. Three calls (the staff kept telling me she'd be in later and they'd have her call me, almost scripted), two emails and a social media message she finally called me back. She said she was out of town (but each time I called her staff said she'd be in later). She said the batch of icing was all gone. It had been used on other cakes and that she wasn't able to test it. She asked me what I was looking for, what would make me happy (ummm to have the icing taste tested). She offered a cake or a fair refund. We settled on half my money back. While I appreciate the money back I don't appreciate having to make so many calls, two emails and a social media outreach for a resolution.
