One of the best galleries on the Upper East Side, which also plays host to a number of great lectures. Make an appointment to go, ring the buzzer at the entrance to what looks like a private mansion, and enter past two doors to see interesting, well-curated exhibitions that are bound to make you think. Head upstairs for more art in two well-lit, spacious rooms.
They also invite great thinkers like Baudrillard and Badiou to give lectures in one of their upstairs rooms, most of which are greatly oversubscribed. I was here for a Badiou lecture recently, and although the gallery staff had some unnecessary trouble setting up (who puts a video camera at eye level in the middle of the chairs?), the lecture turned out to be amazing - erudite, fun, and stimulating. People (everyone from students to elderly Europeans) sat on the floor, stood in the corners, and generally overwhelmed the room.
Jack Tilton, who you can find running around the gallery on any given day, has created one of the loveliest and most enjoyable art spaces I've ever seen outside of Chelsea. How can you not like a place that'll bring Badiou, Baudrillard, and Zizek to the public for free? read more
