But once inside it was actually very nice. Very clean with friendly staff. We were the only service going on at the time. Outside the room they have a big board that displays the name and picture. There was a tv in the room that we were able to display pictures on. After the visitation, we went to the little chapel for mass. Overall it was a good experience for a funeral.

The building is very 1970s with a wide colonnade on the front which allowed many attendees to gather and stress-smoke. The inside features many small rooms that can be opened onto each other for larger or smaller funerals. There is plenty of seating dispersed around in case you need a moment. I like the center courtyard/sun area. There are also "lounges" near most of the rooms so that you can take a moment and have a snack or sip a beverage. The chapel is pretty generic and can handle most religious denominations (or the agnostic) very well. Each service/faith can bring their own trappings to make it feel homey. The only thing that really distinguishes it is the pews. The staff was very kind on Saturday and handled a large crowd well. There are plenty of tissue boxes scattered about and they've added big screen TVs in the viewing rooms so you can put up photos of the deceased. *Sigh* You know it's hard to write a review of a funeral home. This is where we had my grandfather's funeral in the early 90s and I remember becoming irrationally angry at a staff person for something stupid. Grief it sucks. So this funeral home is fine. I just can't bring myself to say I'm a fan.

Mahalia Jackson is buried here, in her own little fenced off area. There are mausoleums, very high. I hope whoever is buried on top (about 20 feet high) aren't scared to death of heights. We met with CC one of the funeral directors and she was wonderful. She was kind and patient with Mom (and me). And listened to us as we explained what we wanted for his funeral. We discussed the costs of their services and she listened as we discussed what was important to us (and the rest of our family) and what was not. Conveniently she had worked with my parents' church before and was able to take many of the details off my Mom's shoulders, making phone calls and arranging for honorariums/payments. She also orchestrated everything during our limited visitation and funeral mass. Covid times means it's extra hard to say goodbye to our loved ones since many of our regular rituals have to be modified for safety. I really appreciated that CC helped us navigate that path.
