Don't be confused, there is a Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, but that is CLOSED, and is located in the Garden District (near Commander's Palace restaurant). You will need to be in a tour to enter, but I did it on the cheap. If you walk the perimeter, you can view the grounds from the iron gates built into the block walls. I stuck my phone in and took some nice photos. At the entrance, I peeked in and was able to see the Nicholas Cage pyramid crypt.

It has also been a location for some of the worst of times with having to say goodbye to good friends and having to transition from knowing them in life to leaving them here for their final resting place. From an educational standpoint you can also find BOTH above ground and underground spaces here to prove that the old rumor of the water table preventing underground burials is just a rumor as New Orleans definitely has a LOT of underground burials. Burials began in 1855 but the actual construction did not begin until 1856. As most of New Orleans' tombs are above ground, it is a very popular tourists' attraction, as there are often tour busses parked outside the gate. Before buying a plot here, I'd consider the hours of operation as the gates are "only" open from 8:00 AM until 4:30 PM Monday through Saturday, and 8:00 AM until 4:00 PM on Sundays and holidays. These hours can be a little constraining if you work past 4:30 PM. Prior to my dad's passing in Spring 2025, he told us that he wanted to be buried in St. Louis Cemetery 3, as he wanted to close to Bayou St. John, as it brought back fond childhood memories going fishing there. He chose to be cremated, as will my mom one day. They chose a side by side niche for their ashes in the St. Michael the Archangel Cremation Garden, which is a fairly "new" addition to the cemetery. Mrs. Mel Byrd helped us with all the details regarding his final resting place and plaque. There are 2 or 3 mausoleums here as well as countless vaults and above ground gravesites. Even though it's a tourist attraction, most tourists are very respectful when I have been there. Often times, there are no tourists there and it can be very serene. If you are not from New Orleans, this is a good/informative tour outside of the French Quarter.

Enjoy the residential neighborhood facing the park, and if the church is open (Star of the Sea), you might peek in. It's notable for the black and Latina angels painted inside the church. We spoke with Hope Mausoleum regarding them and was told reviews were not from property owners and had nothing to do with family members in Hope Mausoleum. Those reviews are from people who were denied access and or asked to leave. Some of these latest reviews are absolutely out the box. They also told us they do not give out burial information unless proof of lineage is obtained. We were very pleased that. We have never had an issue with the staff. They have always been very professional. This is a privately owned mausoleum and cemetery. There is a sign blocking the entrance letting people know that you must own property or be a family member to gain entrance. It also states no touring or photos are allowed. The length some people will go through because they didn't get their way is beyond me. Hope Mausoleum also has 9 cameras throughout the outside the gates and inside the gates as well. This is a safe and well respected cemetery.

I traveled from Georgia to New Orleans to visit graves of family members from my dad's side, who I never got to know. My dad's family have been in New Orleans since its founding! Most of my ancestors are in graveyards, so we have spent the week visiting them freely and enjoying the genealogy and discovering process. Many of my family members, according to New Orleans public city records and Ancestry.com, were buried at Girod Street Cemetery which was closed permanently and remains moved to the Hope Mausoleum. There is a plaque there in remembrance of these families, and my last name, Lathrop, is among them. Upon arrival, a sign by a WIDE OPENED gate said that only family members of those buried there were allowed inside. To you who are reading this...does that sound like me? It did to me and I thought nothing of going in. Well, I walked around for about 5 minutes before I wax approached by the same man mentioned in previous reviews with his kaki shorts and hateful demeanor. He told us we were not welcome and that we were to leave immediately. I tried to explain to him my interests in simply seeing this plaque and he was not hearing it. Quite simply, the sign and open gate are misleading!! The way he spoke to us ruined our whole day. We were shaken. I followed him to the office because I thought he was leading me to the plaque and saw another worker in there. The two of them, sitting in a small office waiting to kick people out of a place of remembering with an open gate!!! Why not sit outside, greet people and explain the policy proactively? Lazy, rude, and simply not New Orleans vibe. If I were in charge of staffing and visitation at the "Hope" Mausoleum I would immediately ask this person to leave and hire a less ridiculous person.
