Such is the case last Friday when we wanted a break from the several Mexican eateries close to home. A 20 minute drive to Preston Highway and there we were. We've been here several times before and have never been disappointed. On this particular Friday we were seated immediately and started perusing the menu. El Acapulco has a very sizable menu with vegetarian and meat-o-saurus options ad-infinitum. On previous visits I've had enchiladas of some sort and this time just. plain. tacos sounded good. My eyes spotted the Quesa-Tacos and I was intrigued. Melted cheese between corn tortillas, then filled with a protein and covered with cilantro and onion?!?!? SOUNDS SUPERB. My selections were birria, chorizo, and carne asada. More on that later. El Acapulco is much larger inside than it appears to be on the outside. I don't know what it was before it became El Acapulco, but it's huge! Open ceiling with exposed rafters give it a very open feel. There are a number of screen scattered around the with current news playing, and the background music isn't overwhelming. The staff is busy hustling, 100% of the time. It's always been clean and well-maintained. About ten minutes later our food arrived. I anxiously awaited my Quesa-Tacos and you can see by my photo that I was not disappointed! I've eaten a lot of tacos in a lot of restaurants, but these were, hands-down, some of the absolute best. The tortillas appeared to be slightly grilled on each side to melt the cheese between the layers...and It. Was. Amazeballs. When I was done I was kinda sad that they were gone. I was at once happy and sad. That doesn't happen too often. I'm the kind of person who finds one thing he REALLY likes at a restaurant and largely stays with it. Thick chips with no salt. Not sure which generic brand it of the bag, but really unacceptable. It doesn't stop there. The chicken was edible, but not quality. Did not appear to be fresh, and definitely want juicy. Seasoned cardboard might be the best descriptor. So, why 2 stars and not 1? The people were excellent! They may not have been the most attentive during our visit, but they were quick when we ordered. Sometimes do quick we couldn't finish the request lol. That said they were nice and hard-working. I believe they wanted us to enjoy ourselves. There are a lot of small Mexican restaurants. My recommendation is to drive 5-10 minutes to another one.

When I told the clerk I could not eat the fries he just said we can leave those off. But I still paid full price for the kids meal. My friend was half way done eating before my quesadilla arrived at the table. It was so greasy and had a old grease taste. I ate one of the 4 pieces that came on the plate and threw the rest of it in the garbage. I was really disappointed in the service and the food I ordered. It was crowded, you order at the counter, order bar drinks at the back bar, seat yourself and they bring you your food. I was not impressed.

Bandido did us well! Located on Shelbyville Road in St. Matthews, it's kind of unassuming in that there aren't flashing lights or neon. Just a simple sign on the roadside. Bandido isn't a full-service eatery, but an "order at the counter and we'll call your name when it's ready" kind of place. The menu is extensive and features a number of signature burritos, almost all of which I wouldn't mind trying on my next visit. I'm particularly interested in the Chile Relleno Burrito, but they all look amazing. BUT...Jim is a sucker for Street Tacos so, yea... I had street tacos -- Chicken, to be exact. When ordering street tacos all three have to be the same kind; no mix-and-match, and I'm OK with that. We ordered a basked of chips and salsa also (yes, there's an upcharge). There's also a salsa bar with several kinds of salsa for your meal enhancement. OH...and most importantly...they have Glass Bottle Coke®. In order to truly appreciate Street Tacos you have to have glass bottle Coke®. This is the way. Our food delivery was about ten minutes and everything came out grand. Our food was hot, the chips and salsa were tasty, and my street tacos were a-maze-ing. I opted to make mine a combo, adding riced and refried beans. Refried beans in Mexican eateries can vary from seriously average to amazing so you're never sure what to expect. Bandido's refried beans were out-freaking-standing. I'm not sure what kind of magic goes into them, but they are most awesome. The decor is, in keeping with the Mexican theme, bright and colorful, with yellow being the primary color. It's not overly decorate wall-to-wall television screens. During our visit I saw a good number of people come in for takeout, so I'm guessing they do a pretty good takeout visit. I'm glad we finally tried Bandido. We generally have a monthlong rotation of Friday dinner spots and I think Bandido has now been added to that list.

I replied we were using a card and we were directed to use a kiosk. But, they were taking other customers orders. The kiosk was kind of confusing but, figured it out. We waited about 20-30 minutes for our food, they were busy but, gave them the benefit of the doubt. Also wish they never took away the fountain drinks, they have only canned and bottled drinks. They still have their margaritas. Once we received our food only one at a time it was ready, usually it's ready all at once. My friend ordered the California burrito no fries but, apparently wasn't aware when placing the order had to choose the add ons and only got chicken in the burrito, hence why the kiosk was confusing. I let my friend use my extra cheese from my 3 rolled tacos. I also happen to look at the menu and they have cash and credit card prices for their food. We definitely missed that at the beginning and explains why we were asked if we were using cash or card. Idk what's up with that change but doesn't sit well with us.
