Well nuts. I ordered a Burrito Bravo with shredded chicken. I got a Burrito Bravo with ground beef. I'm not a fussy person, so I just ate it. I've had this dish many times. It just missed the mark this time. Enchilada sauce was too sweet, beans and rice were just meh. Portions were a joke. Maybe a 1/2 cup of rice and beans. Kicker was the bone chip in the ground beef. Absolutely horrible. I've never seen a burned tamale before. The "tostada" was a half taco shell completely smothered in runny beans & lettuce, couldn't pick it up. Asked for green sauce and tortillas: never received either. Took one bite of the burrito (literally just bland meat in a tortilla) and pushed the plate to the edge of the table. Waiter asked if I wanted a to go box, I said no, told him it's terrible, and never heard another word nor saw a manager. Gross food, bad service. Our go to Mexican restaurant in St Matthews! It has a traditional hometown Mexican restaurant feel to it. We have been here multiple times and tried many different things. On a Friday evening it can be pretty busy with high school football crowd, but most other days throughout the week it's less busy. The service has been good and they are normally quick to get food out! We have also ordered online for carry out and the food was ready by the time we arrived, very easy process! A longtime resident of my "to try" list of restaurants, El Tarasco has made it into the coveted spot of neighborhood Mexican restaurant. I visited recently with a friend for a late dinner. After 9:00, it is hard to find a place that is open and still seating guests. At El Tarasco, we got right in to an empty booth where we were promptly given a bowl of tortilla chips and a bowl each of mild and hot salsa. Of course it's not a night out to your local Mexican joint without ordering margaritas. We went with traditional lime ones to start off the meal. The menu is considerable, and after deliberating, I finally decided on their chicken soup. It was a bowl full of hot, delicious chicken, avocado, cilantro, and rice on the bottom. I devoured it and didn't even care if I slurped! Service was attentive, and my only beef was that we didn't get waters with our meal -- too many tortilla chips means that water is a must! All in all, El Tarasco has moved from my list of "to try" restaurants to "to revisit". read more

I have only found this place in the last 5-6 months or so. But it is definitely part of my restaurant rotation now. The Gold Margaritas are great, and everything I have had off the menu is my new favorite. Parking can be a bit tight right next to the building, but there's a huge lot across the way. It is way bigger inside than it might look from outside. I usually sit at the bar in the back, which is really cool with the Mexican pesos embedded in the clear varnish on the rustic wooden bar. Servers Luis and Elvis always take care of me. This seems to be a regular spot for a lot of St. Matthews folks, and now for me. My family chose this spot for a quick lunch after the easter parade today. It sits off Shelbyville Rd in a cluster of shops and restaurants, and once inside you'll be surprised at its size. Warning - if you have guys with large shoulders in your group, the booths are "cozy". Lunch runs each day 11a-3p and is a good value. Three of us got the burrito, taco and rice combo while my youngest ordered the kids cheeseburger and fries. It's a good value for the meal. Both the taco and burrito was filled with meat, plus lettuce and cheese topping on the taco. The queso was also yummy and plentiful. On the lunch menu we spotted a note regarding chips and queso being an extra charge after the first round. It's a bit hidden on the menu so when we ordered the queso, we asked if it came with chips (our server said he would do that). I was very disappointed after visiting and I hoped for better. I ordered a red sauce burrito with chips and guac. The guacamole was unsalted and had little to no lime flavor. The chicken burrito was ordered without cheese. The burrito I got had lots of cheese mixed in with the red sauce, and the burrito was made with what tastes like del taco meat sauce and no other ingredients. I repeat, I ordered a chicken burrito and I received basically a ground beef wrap. It didn't taste seasoned at all. This is not an authentic Mexican restaurant I am sad to say. read more

First time for us to this Restaurant. It was busy for a Tuesday evening and there was a group of us numbering 20, including kids. The complimentary chips were thick and authentic and the sauces were good. I ordered Vegetarian plate consisting of Pablano stuffed with cheese, retried bean stuffed burrito and rice( plate was hot and smelled delicious); 2 kids meals and my wife ordered a mixed plate with various fairs of "Mexican" food. We arrived late to the group party but from our Order to delivery was very quick and all looked delicious (since we tend to eat with eyes anyway ), and all food was fresh and Hot. Service was top notch!! All The people working at this restaurant were hustling, which I really appreciate such dedicated service. We ate here for the first time today. Nice place. Great service and fast. Clean. The wife and I both got steak fihetas. The steak wasn't seasoned at all. The chopped onion was very strong. It actually choked me. The salsa that came with the tortilla chips was too spicy and we asked for mild. The waiter brought more that was just tomato sauce. Our daughter said the food she got wasn't seasoned either. But, after we salted and pepperd the meat, it was okay. It was $90 for 6 adults and 1 child. Most of us got lunch specials. read more

Solid "nothing-special" Mexican fare with good happy hour deals throughout the week. Would I make a special trip from elsewhere in Louisville to St. Matthews to visit El Tarasco? No. But since it's in the neighborhood, and I can walk home after a few margaritas or cervezas, it's a decent option when I want to gorge myself on chips and salsa, rice, beans, and some kind of meat. El Tarasco is pretty great in terms of authentic Mexican food. The menu is very large, serving everything from shrimp cocktails to burritos. They are more of a sit down joint and they reward you nicely with a big tray of chips and two types of salsas right when you take a seat. The waiters I've encountered have always been really cool and helpful. The tables are all clean and the food comes out piping hot with my cheese molten on top of my burrito. The burritos I've had here are enormous and definitely filling. I had the burrito gigante and although simple, it was very tasty! I washed it down with a 32 oz Modelo Negra which really made the meal great! They also serve Micheladas here which I highly suggest you try if you've never ventured that far into Mexican territory. What's next? Well, next time u want to try more of the menu... They have a nice looking appetizer dip selection on the menu that looks worth exploring. They also serve flautas which blew my mind since there was only one restaurant in Southern California that I knew of that served flautas! I honestly thought that was the last thing is find in Kentucky! They have enchiladas, quesadillas, and a good seafood selection. So much to explore! I would bring my friends here if they visit from out of town and had a craving for Mexican food! They have some great flavors that they work with and I'm sure I'll be back for more! I do wish they had a more extensive selection of meats here (birria, lengua, al pastor, bucche), but that depends ultimately on whether this area is ready for all those flavors that our southern neighbors have to offer! read more

This is my neighborhood Mexican restaurant and probably eat here twice a week. Service is outstanding prices are good and the food is delicious. You can get more americanized dishes cover in cheese sauce like many MEX restaurants BUT they have phenomenal authentic dishes as well. The Al Pastor, carnitas, camarones diablo, etc are all worth a try. I dont give 5 stars lightly but this place hovers perfectly between what many mex restaurants think you want and actual mexican dishes!!! read more

I haven't been here in a couple of years a good quality really went downhill. Service is good , service was on the ball. Problem was the food quality. I got the 3 meat trio fajitas. They had shrimp, steak and chicken. The shrimp was delicious. The chicken was good. The steak was horrible. It was rubbery, chewy and salty. I could have gotten a frozen TV dinner with better quality meat. I could have had the fiction tv family Beverly hillbillies make better roadkill. Seriously the steak was like trying to eat laffy taffy . I had my mom with me and she said her tacos were good. She wanted fried ice cream but I remember from the last time I brought her they didn't have any. So the waiter ask twice how everything was and I told him both times the steak was horrible. They did not offer to take it off , they did not offer to redo it or replace . Just a sorry . I would have been fine if they took that horrible steak away and brought a few more shrimp. They were also very skimpy on the green peppers and onions I barely had enough for 1 fajita. When I went to pay bill they asked again how everything was. I told them again steak was horrible. Again just a sorry no offer to replace or redo just a blank look of like they didn't understand. Guess I won't be back for another 2 years since you can't take care of that. The staff was very friendly and attentive to the fact that food took a particularly long time. But it was Friday night. He restaurant is huge and it was good to see so many families there enjoying the evening together. Food was so so, although portions were pretty generous. When it comes to low end Mexican restaurants, el tarasco fits right in. I went for dinner with a group of 5 on a Wednesday night. We were promptly seated and served chips and salsa and had drink orders taken. The promptness comes from the restaurant being virtually empty. The salsas were pretty basic, and mild one and a hot one. I like to add some hot sauce to the hot to add an extra kick. The chips are even more plain. They taste like they are from a bag. I dont think they are house made, but I could be wrong. The entrees are similar to other small Mexican restaurants. Tacos, burritos, enchiladas, rice, beans, etc. My biggest warning, the ground beef is terrible. Absolutely worth paying a little more to upgrade to chicken or steak. Other than that, the restaurant is what you would expect. Mexican beers are generally on special, along with margaritas. Servers keep the chips, salsa, and drinks full. Meals are an average price. Nothing special here honestly, but if you find yourself in search of an average Mexican restaurant, El Tarasco might be the perfect fit for you. read more
