The grounds were once owned by the Goethe family, later by another famous family the Bethmann-Metzlers. In 1837 the Rothschilds bought the park and built the Grüneburgsschlösschen, little palace, and had the grounds relaid as a park by Siesmayer. The building was destroyed in 1944 and not rebuilt.
Recently, as a result of the book fair in 2006, a fine pair of Korean houses have been erected in a quiet corner of the park.
