By day a leisurely stroll around this plaza and you can discover it is framed by a ton of historical buildings, as well as restaurants.
No worries about traffic since this is a pedestrian zone. Cars have a narrow lane at the outskirts of this place and no access to the actual place.
You can access from the city below, or make your way down from the castle and its gardens or come through the Tiergaertnertor itself (Quite a historic tunnel/gate) after which this plaza was named.
You could visit the Duerer Haus, a museum dedicated to the city's famous painter and also his former residence.
Have a seat at one of the many restaurants, inside or on their patios opening up to the plaza.
At night this place is often buzzing, as mostly youth and middle aged folks gather and just sit on the benches and largely just the pavement, drinking beer, cocktails or whatever and just visit with one another. Yes you can drink in public in Germany, you just don't want to be a drunk in public. There is a difference. You can get so call plaza beers or plaza cocktails from most of the surrounding restaurants. You will have to pay a small deposit for the glass (yes, it is real glass , not plastic) and you will get the deposit back when you return the glass unharmed.
The huge tree in the middle of it all lights up at night and adds ambiance. You can also see the lit castle up above.
