I feel comfortable working with my manager at TIAA. He is on top of things and does things with me not for me without input

Too bad we can't put no stars. When looking for a financial planner or any other professional, do…read moreyour research, read the reviews, check professional licenses, etc. I listened to a brief webinar most likely I saw on a sponsored Facebook site (really don't remember where) and Harbour Pointe offered a free 15 minute phone consultation which I scheduled. 11/19/21: This was the most bizarre conversation I've ever had with a professional. Karen (had to ask her over 8 to 10 times what her name was at the end of the car when she refused to give it to me and finally said "Karen"). That, in and of itself, is very, very strange. I said, "are you refusing to give me your name" and she said "I have another call and I have to go". I persisted and she finally blurted Karen. I'll have to assume that this Karen is Karen Scott Mims, and I assume this because she would not confirm her full name and she is the only Karen appearing on Harbour Pointe website. I wanted her name for my notes and because I planned to write a review after this peculiar call. Bottom line, she listened to my query which was pretty specific on how do you figure your required minimum distributions from your plan and after me telling her my assets she said essentially, they would not be a good fit for me. She never even answered that basic question or any other question. Took prodding to get an answer why they were not a good fit for me and I never fully did. Folks, I suspect I'm not a good fit because I don't have the kind of wealth she was looking for..but she was the one who offered a consultation (which should include answering a few basic questions which she never did). She should not waste her time and mine or others by saying up front "free 15 minute consultation only if have $[insert dollar amount here as she fits]." She was beyond rude. So then I looked her up after the call and saw some other reviews. Oh yeah Michael R. (reviewer), I can surely picture your full experience with her. I'm surprised you even stayed for the remainder of your seminar. So apparently, she was rude to someone who attended her seminar who apparently had wealth. If a licensed professional will not give you their name at the end of the phone call (because you didn't catch it at the beginning of the call) that is a huge RED FLAG in my opinion. I've worked for law firms all my adult life (and her website says she is an attorney) which just further bolstered the shock of that phone call. I hope this review helps someone. Kelly H

I recently went to a seminar at a restaurant given by Karen Scott-Mims. The seminar was good, but…read moreI felt treated DISRESPECTFULLY by Ms. S-M. When I signed in I was asked to fill out a form with personal information. I did not put my cellphone number on the form because I only use it for emergencies. Ms. S-M DEMANDED my cellphone number. I told her I do not give it out and use the phone only for emergencies. She replied in an irritated tone "THIS IS AN EMERGENCY." I still refused to give it to her. After the above interaction Ms. S-M told me to stand behind a table, as if I were a misbehaving child in school many years ago when the teacher sent bad children to sit in the corner. I'm surprised Ms. S-M did not demand I put a dunce hat on like teachers used to do then. In reality, I am a Ph.d. level mechanical engineer, and a wealthy one too. I had to wait for several minutes behind a table while an associate of Ms. S-M supposedly looked for a seat for me. I was surprised when I entered the dining room to see that there were MANY empty seats. I felt as if Ms. S-M had "punished" me for not giving her what she wanted. Although Ms. S-M's presentation was good she did NOT allow for questions after the presentation as EVERY other presentation I've been to did (and I've been to many). She also did NOT have a handout of the presentation for attendees as most presentations do. Her presentation was LONG. I was hungry. Attendees were forced to wait until her presentation was over to start eating, which was close to 7:30 pm. Most other presentations at restaurants allow participants to start dinner during the presentation. I got the feeling that Ms. S-M likes to control people. At one point during her presentation she asked a question and nobody answered. She then said "Are you sleeping?" Well, I don't know if people were sleeping but I'm sure many were hungry and did not answer because they were hoping she'd finally finish and let us EAT. A very nice couple sat down next to me at my table. During dinner I was having a very enjoyable conversation with them. Suddenly Ms. S-M came next to me and said "I WANT YOU TO MOVE TO ANOTHER TABLE." I was SHOCKED. I asked her why. She replied "BECAUSE THIS IS MY SEMINAR." I replied I don't want to move. She then said "YOU CAN MOVE, OR YOU CAN LEAVE." I have NEVER been so disrespectfully treated in my life! I ended up moving to another table. I actually had to rush finishing my dinner because due to Ms. S-M talking so long there was not a lot of time to have a leisurely dinner before we were forced out. In fact there was no time to eat dessert. I would NEVER work with Ms. S-M or recommend anyone else do so. A person who doesn't know how to treat people with respect, and she certainly doesn't, is NOT someone to work with. I don't care what she knows about wealth management. I am what Ms. S-M referred to as a "high wealth" individual. Too bad for her that she mistreated me. I will take my wealth elsewhere and tell anyone I know who may be looking for someone to manage their wealth to do the same!
