    My daughters art piece
    Ashley Q.

Awesome place to come and relax while making your own pottery or just painting one. They have tons of pre made pottery to choose from if your the type that just enjoys painting. It's a great place to bring your kids they have so many fun pottery idea for the kiddos to enjoy and the staff is great. You will be greeted with a smile and they explain everything step by step. The staff is also great a wrangling a group of little ones. I came here with my daughter and four other children. They first picked out the piece they wanted to paint then were taken to a wall with all the colored paints they have and each picked out the colors they wanted on their palettes. For a group of five children the girl that helped us had all of their attention and was very good at making sure they had whatever they needed. When the painting was done she had each of them take their pottery over to a shelf so that they could seal them which takes a couple of days so you can not leave with the item that day you have to return to pick them up at a later date. Not all the children were done at the same time so the staff made sure the ones that were done had crayons and paper to keep them busy. Such a fun bonding experience with the kids. They also offer camps and workshops at this location which is awesome. Some of the items can be a little bit pricy but they do have some affordable ones. It's also a great place for a Mom's night out to just relax with your friends. The shop is conveniently located across the street from a parking garage that has free 4 hour parking or if you can find street parking that is 2 hours. Go and check it out you won't be disappointed!!

I love their selection of bisque ready to paint but I almost fainted from the prices. Too expensive for me.

I sent my daughter here for a 4 day drawing camp this summer August 2019. Matilda was 8 years old…read moreand the drawings she did were so nice to see/keep! She also loved the materials and the "studio" (though it seems very cramped to me) The downside for us was instructors style of teaching. She was harsh and not really welcoming or kind. When I tried to speak with her and share my concerns on the second day she made a big speech to me about how important it is making sure the children aren't comparing themselves to one another so they need to be isolated to their own work with no talking to one another. I think in a 4 day summer camp my expectation was more about light-hearted fun than something serious like that. We won't go back for this reason so I can't give it 5 stars. I wish it had gone differently because Matilda's work is really great!

The students are surrounded with the philosophy that there are no mistakes in art and everyone can learn to draw. Our teachers support a healthy, positive sense of self-esteem in students through a relaxed, nurturing, and educational environment. Just as musicians learn notes and scales in order to play instruments, Monart students learn skills necessary to translate their perceptions onto paper. The Monart approach offers the right balance; enough structure to be successful and enough freedom to be creative. This method removes the mystery and fear that keep people from drawing. Anyone can tap into "the artist within" through this method. We offer Getting Ready, Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Painting classes.

In today's society, things that are broken are often discarded and thrown away…read more I attended a kintsugi workshop at The Art Center Highland Park. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage. Kintsugi treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object. The broken pieces are mended together then painted with gold, silver or platinum paint. The result is that the broken piece is now transformed and by highlighting the flaws and accepting the imperfections, this is now a completely different and beautiful object. Our workshop was taught by Takahashi, Mami, a skilled teacher from Tokyo (by Ghibli Museum she told us). All materials were provided, even the broken pottery (an advanced student brought their own broken vase). The upstairs studio was open, well-ventilated and set up with all materials laid out in an orderly fashion. I appreciated the knowledge and experience that our teacher had, as a skilled working apprentice under a Grand kintsugi Master. She walked around, demonstrating and providing hands-on instruction. As a philosophy, kintsugi is similar to wabi-sabi, an embracing of the flawed or imperfect. Maybe I can incorporate a bit of this practice myself, and accept flaws or imperfections rather than deeming something less than perfect and thus must be discarded. I've taken classes here before and attended gallery showings. This is a close location to downtown HP, has a parking lot and street parking.

Now I don't care about her coming home everyday with a project completed or even every week. I have a BFA myself so well understand art as a process. And less than finished projects I thought she would be provided with guidance on certain skills that need to be learned and which can cause many kids to give up on creating art at her age because they just don't know how to do something. Their website makes it seem like they have distinct classes throughout the day. Instead my daughter worked on drawings of pokemon throughout the day with little to no instruction or guidance. She did mention day 2 someone helping her learn how to layer colors on a preprinted coloring page. I am so disappointed and angry and feel like this place misrepresents what they offer. If they were up front about creating an environment for kids to be self directed with art without a published schedule at least I'd know what I was signing up for. When I spoke with the person in charge (manager? owner? She never introduced herself) I was told that my daughter had selected to sit by herself and that they provide a stress free environment for creating art. I would have liked to be informed that this was happening so I could check in with my daughter but instead I was only told this when I expressed anger at wasting my money. Feel free to give them your money if you'd like to spend it on glorified babysitting.
