For starters, lets take my first slightly under qualified question, that being "Explain to me how Rolfing is different than massage?" Business owner and Certified Rolfer Aaron stated "we are taught to "see" what body segment is malfunctioning or not functioning optimally in a human being as a structure". "That's why it is called "structural integration". "We are taught to "listen" with our hands and out which areas of the body are holding tension or which are not functioning properly." This made complete sense as once we began discussing my few problematic areas, specifically my right shoulder, the pulling and stretching that was put upon me had a calming effect both on my shoulder but then on and across my body. It was as if the movements were encouraging my body to operate in a more functional, more optimal manner as if maximizing the potential of my elasticity. A massage to me is where the Masseuse massages all over with no real specific "road map", pressing down between the muscles, an initial feeling I do not enjoy. I noticed that Aaron did not do kneading or hard pressing nor repeated stroking of any kind, it felt as though everything was directed on lengthening.
