After searching for a good pilates studio in Center City, I was happy to discover the recently opened Thrive, a 'tentacle' of Philly Power Yoga (one of the most popular power yoga places in Philly). Newcomers, intermediate and advanced pilates students can all agree that Center City could use more pilates studios that respect and honor the teachings of Joseph Pilates himself. We can also agree that it is very difficult to know what to expect because studios and instruction vary so much. Not to say that there are no modifications at Thrive (because there are, depending on your body's needs), but it is always nice to know that you are maximizing your workout and experience as it was originally intended. Thrive offers mat classes as well as private instruction -- the instructors are all friendly and know what they are doing. Also a rarity, the studio has a nice full bath in case you need to freshen up/shower after class. I am an old guy and have been doing Pilates for about a year now in both Aspen and rural Maryland with great results in strength, endurance, and flexibility. I've taken a few prenatal yoga classes at Thrive and have really enjoyed them. The instructor, Sara, is fantastic and the class itself is challenging (for a pregnant version of myself at least). The studio is intimate which I really like. Cons are, there is not a lot of "space" either to check in or change- there is a front hall to check in/store your bag/shoes and a bathroom to change in. Also if you're into peacefully leaving your practice it's difficult because there are always people coming in to the studio thru that same tight hall for the next class. The class times are not the greatest if you're working (4:15 for prenatal) but the rest of the class schedule seems reasonable. Overall though it is a great location near Rittenhouse, the instructor is great, they have a great online system to sign up for class, and they have multi-class deals which can bring the per-class fee down to a more palatable number. read more

As a new comer to the world of Pilates, I was happy to find a class that suits my level and my schedule. For 2 weeks I have attended Jay-Hoon's Saturday morning Pilates mat class, and I'm hooked! I find the class challenging but easy to follow through Jay-Hoon's instruction. He gives several options of modification for each pose so that if you injured or want to really push it, there's a modification to suit you. The studio itself is beautiful and the price ($50 for 5 mat classes) is very reasonable for the quality of the class. Certainly would recommend this studio to friends. read more

I admit - I'm kind of a jerk when it comes to group fitness. I get bored very easily and rarely return after one or two tests of a class. I was totally shocked that after the first class, Gina's Cardio Kickboxing classes absolutely had me hooked! I have been going to every single class for a month and do not expect to stop anytime soon. Her music, enthusiasm, and expertise keep me pushing myself and wanting to come back for more. I originally purchased a 6 pack deal with amazon local and went through the pack in less then a week and a half as I joined the various class options that were offered. Within that period, I found myself to be more energized and actually excited for the first time to go to an exercise type of class. All the instructors are great and helpful - and make the classes a lot of fun and not intimidating at all. I'm now heading into month 2 of my full membership and highly recommend coming to this studio as it is worth every penny and some! read more

I love this place! The trainers are all awesome, the classes challenging and accepting of all skill and fitness levels. I take Pilates Mat and have definitely upped my game via the excellent guidance provided. The place is charming and I am always greeted in a friendly way. Thrive is a hidden gem in the Rittenhouse Square area. Before finding Thrive, I had taken pilates classes at a local gym for approximately 2 years. When I came to Thrive, I met instructors who are passionate about pilates and love to help students improve. There are many classes available at all times of the day, 7 days a week. The rates are very reasonable, with discounts for students! The studio is clean and accessible. Equipment, including mats, is available for students. Instructors are kind and friendly and will go out of their way to help you in any way they can. If you are new to pilates, Lauren and Bonnie are awesome. Dana's class is fast paced and intense. My technique has improved leaps and bounds thanks to Bonnie's direct feedback and "practice to perfection" way of teaching her classes. Hally and Gina are excellent, though I have not taken as many of their classes. Thrive now offers kickboxing classes which have taken the studio to a new level. The kickboxing class is awesome and a great way to get some cardio into your workout schedule! read more

Great classes and really amazing place for anyone who wants to go to regular classes to stay fit. Every single instructor I went to was super professional and workouts are very efficient. I loved Barre classes, cardio kick-boxing was amazing and Chelsea's butt and thigh is a must! These classes are ideal for those who do not like standard gym work-out and need something a little bit more structured. Usually with the gym I am finding acceptable excuses on why this time its ok if I don't go, but since I started at Thrive I was really upset if I couldn't avoid skipping a class! Chelsea, Karlee, Gina and Lauren are all amazing, they make you feel good regardless of your level and how frequent you go! I can only wish they had such studios in every city! read more

If you're looking for great classes without an intimidating "scene," Thrive is the place to be. The teachers are excellent, and the students represent all ages, body types, and levels of experience. It's a great choice for newbies as well those more familiar with Pilates and fitness. The monthly memberships are VERY reasonably priced, and include all the Pilates classes as well as a variety of cardio and dance styles. I was in a rut. I play roller derby, and I just wasn't doing anything else. My body needed variety, but I also had a hard time finding any place that I wanted to keep going. I found Thrive, and I've been a loyal customer ever since. I do private equipment sessions with Lauren and a variety of classes (although mostly Gina's classes), and I really love it all. While I'm partial to Lauren and Gina, I've been to other classes and all the instructors are really great. I took Pilates years ago, but it has been at Thrive that I feel I really learned the proper way to do Pilates. It's really awesome that they're offering different things (e.g., the workshops and dance classes) and tweaking the regular schedule because I'm never bored (although I love kickboxing with Gina on as regular a basis as I can get it(. Thrive is more than just a pilates studio -- they provide a target-every-body-part workout that leaves you feeling energized and strong! I actually started coming to this studio last year for Gina's cardio kickboxing classes, and I was immediately hooked. Gina is an amazing instructor with super high energy and a great talent for mix tapes; she gets the most out of her clients by pushing them to their personal edge and inspiring commitment so your eyes never wander to the clock (ok, almost never). I try my hardest to never miss a class ... they're that good. Since I start seeing Gina so frequently, I decided to try some of the other classes at Thrive. I never saw myself as a "pilates person" because I love to sweat and I thought pilates was a little tame for my taste. Thrive has totally transformed my thinking -- and my body. My posture is better, my core is stronger, and I just feel longer / leaner. And the best part? The instructors care and are personally dedicated to all of their students' personal fitness journeys. Hally, the absolutely adorable studio owner / pilates instructor, makes a point of congratulating clients on their progress and also introduces creative new pop-up classes to help keep clients engaged. And if you want a taste of just how difficult pilates can be ... go to Chelsea. Despite her sweet disposition, she will make you sweat, tremble, and fight for every ounce of your workout. She taught an impromptu cardio/strength dance class last night and, by the end of the workout, everyone was exhausted but also begging her to make it a weekly class. Bravo, Thrive. I got into Thrive after getting a 5-class living social or groupon or whatnot. So glad I did. I did their Sunday beginner's classes and Gina's fantastic and makes all the necessary adjustments. I'm pretty uncoordinated and out-of-touch with my core, but aspire to have a pilates body. I'm not there yet, but I left each Sunday feeling great and I'm inspired to do more. read more

I have been looking for a Pilates studio that is affordable and as core focused as I am used to in Florida. This studio is great especially the Stick and Sculpt class and any of the mat classes. I selfishly don't want to share Thrive because I want to keep it a secret. This place is awesome! A no-nonsense, no-attitude studio that provide fitness classes or 1:1 session with a smile. Lauren & Hally, the owners are amazing and love them. I take the Red Hot Dance Fitness classes with Christina. Its addicting as you dance to the current music. I really wished they offered it 3x/week. She incorporates great choreography and the way she teaches the class makes it very easy to follow...that's because Thrive only hire the best of the best instructors. Btw, if you teach dance classes & you can't even dance to the rhythm of the music, you shouldn't be teaching at all. I'm just saying. Only drawback, the studio can get crowded once it reaches its full capacity. You need to limit your extensions but you can still bootie dance til the cow comes home. Otherwise, I would give it a 5 star. Check it out! read more

I've been taking classes at Thrive for over a year now and I am very impressed with the caliber of classes offered. My favorite instructor is Chelsea, who is well versed in pilates, yoga and fitness. I tend to get bored easily but her classes have been able to keep me challenged and engaged. I've built both strength and flexibility over my time with Thrive, and I'm sad to be ending my membership this summer. (Moving back to the Westcoast) I would highly reccommend this studio! read more

I absolutely love Thrive! There are so many things about this studio that set it apart from rest and have kept me coming back for over a year now. First of all, the people are amazing. With a range of diverse backgrounds and teaching styles, you will find the perfect class and instructor for your level. Dancers, physical therapists, athletes of all types, they know how to move you in a way that's best for your body and give you the attention that's hard to find elsewhere. Between small class sizes, exercise modifications, private lessons, and answering your questions after class, going to Thrive feels like having a personal trainer. Hally, the owner, is the sweetest person you'll ever meet and not only remembers everyone but jumps into classes right along side you. In fact, every instructor is so friendly that you'll be chatting with them after class regardless. And if you're on the fence about pilates at all, don't be. Having been a dancer, I've always chosen exercises that focused on fast cardio, high kicks, choreography, etc., which made me wary of the more static pace and repetitious nature of pilates, but once I tried it, I was hooked. In a matter of weeks I saw definite results, felt more energized, and noticed myself incoporating the posture practices into my daily routine. It is so beneficial for all types of people, regardless of your activity level or body shape, and I never realized how much I was missing by just sticking to traditional dance classes. You use your own weight to strengthen your muscles and core, so you can feel the exercises working every muscle group, even (especially) during the ones where you only move a few inches. Bonnie's class is a good example of this - she takes the time to perfect your technique on a few specific moves, and although you might feel like you're lying down for most of the class, trust me, you won't be able to sit up the next day! But if you are looking for something to get your heart rate up, the kickboxing classes are the way to go. Gina teaches these three times a week along with other pilates classes, and I have to say it is one of the most intense workouts I've ever had. You will sweat, you will curse, you might feel like you can't throw one more punch or your arms will fall off, but it will be SO worth it. Don't be intimidated, though, Gina's enthusiasm and upbeat nature makes it more than a fun time, and you'll be coming back for more. Jae-Hoon's Abs & Arms class definitely brings the intensity as well, with a fast-paced and specifically targeted focus. His physical education and dance background is perfect for helping you build muscle in all the right places while keeping exercises interesting and not overly repetitious. Things have only been getting better at Thrive, too. More classes are always being added, both different types and more time slots, and every month there's something new to love here. My most recent addiction is their Monday night Zumba class. Christine is energetic and knowledgeable, and will get you moving to all those salsa, hip-hop, and reggaeton songs you've been too nervous to bust a move to on the dance floor. Although my heart is racing and I'm dripping with sweat, all I want to do after class is go clubbing, seriously! So don't just take my word for it, check it out yourself. The classes are really affordable, even at drop-in rates, and especially if you buy a package (which includes mat rental - woohoo!). Hopefully see ya there! read more

I started going to Thrive through a deal through Living Social and have found that they are my favorite gym/studio in the city! I will keep going back because of their great selection of classes and times, helpful and positive staff, the quality of their classes, and the convenience of their location. I also really like that their studio is very welcoming. The instructors remember everyone's names and now know me as well as the other students who attend their class even after just one session with them. Classes are not crammed with students and there is no pressure to buy more and more classes- like other studios I have been to that do not seem interested in the mission of the studio, but making a buck. Thrive is not like those studios. If you take the same class it is not a repeat week after week but has some different activities which always keep things new. They also have one on one appointments and new workshops all the time. I also really like that they look for feedback about classes, times, and future classes that students are interested in which I think keeps things fresh an is more student focused. I think that Thrive is a gem in the city of many gyms and studios!! read more
