I enjoyed my meeting with Ann Marie. She's very sweet and calming, and she listens to you and cares what you're saying. I originally came to Synergy because I had worked with Jen Turesky before. She's fantastic. She knows what she's talking about and she won't let you off easy. At the same time, she won't let you be too hard on yourself either. She's always willing to work with you. Just let them know you want to see Jen and you can always meet with her after your appointment. Dr. Scott meets with you about your prescriptions, and he is so thorough and nice. He gives you such detailed instructions and goes over everything with you to make sure you understand. It was so nice to have someone right there in the office to go over that aspect of it. Dr. Caruana was my assigned surgeon and he's great as well. I had absolutely no fear that he was an expert in this surgery. I think he told me he's done 1000+ gastric sleeves? I couldn't believe how nice he was in the hospital, too. He was so much nicer than you'd expect a surgeon to be. Also...Misty and Christina, the PAs, are as nice as can be. They perform their surgeries out of ECMC, which freaked me out at first. I had heard awful things and had never been there. It seemed weird that such a nice suburban office would use ECMC. WELL! That surgical ward was super nice! From the waiting area onward it was clean, bright, modern, etc. My room, which was private by the way, was like a modern hotel room! I could not get over how nice it was. I wanted to stay longer, but I was recovering well and got discharged in one night. Bummer. The nurses there were taking such good care of me!

She…read moremust have a fabulous garden, as many of the things we had in cooking class were from her garden she said. Pretty cool. I aspire to that type of garden. This year the tomatoes were a mess, but the kale and broccoli worked fairly well. Next year will be better I'm sure. Meanwhile, on to the review. I attended one of her cooking classes out at the Newman Center at UB. Skinnerville road or something like that. Thank goodness for GPS. The class featured a quinoa salad (similar to one I make at home already, but with some great additions, liked spiced cashews (YUM YUM YUM!) and pomegranate seeds, in season right now). Then there was a date concoction that seemed like dessert to me, but pretty much anything with a balsamic reduction can be a dessert. Some version of potato latkes, made with sweet potatoes rounded out the offerings. I wasn't part of making those and while I enjoyed eating them (you get to eat after the cooking!), cant comment much further. Its all vegetarian, and I'm pretty sure this meal was vegan as well, but not positive. Her website has a ton of great recipes, all plant based, and she presents them in a chatty and engaging way. I am looking forward to more of her classes. Very hands on, we all helped on various dishes. Shes pretty informal, so asks the class to divide themselves up. She does stop class throughout to share "helpful info, tricks, methods etc" that all will benefit from. And she almost sold me on a vitamix, but for now my Ninja is holding strong. If you already cook well and want to move to more vegetarian fare, her classes and website are a great place to look. If you don't cook well but want to learn more, these classes are great for that too. I'm working on a more plant based diet for the house, and this was perfect. 4-2017

Over the last 15 years, I have had the privilege to have Dr. Carter as part of my health team, and…read moreit's been extremely healing and helpful. I have had consistent health issues from staph infections and shingles, to problems with my nervous and lymphatic system, anemia and chronic allergies at a young age. Some of these conditions have been harder to treat, owing to the lack of a well-known root cause and/or diagnosis; this has been extremely frustrating, not only because of the pain and illness, but because of the lack of empathy, care and love I have experienced in the traditional medical system. Dr. Carter has been the one doctor that has really listened to me in a very healing way. He has validated my concerns and has not not rushed to diagnose something just to check a box. Instead of making assumptions, he has patiently walked with me through this journey to health with a lot of loving care, empowering me in every step of the way to take control of my health. I have had experiences with many doctors that simply don't show care or empathy; with Dr. Carter, I have felt that he cares for me as a patient in a holistic way, and this in itself has been incredibly healing for me. Not only that, but his evaluations and recommendations have been the most effective throughout my healing journey, as a result of his holistic, personal, and balanced approach. As an anthropologist, I have studied the traditional and fundamental role of healthcare providers over time and in a variety of cultures: a trusted person who cares for the total wellbeing of their patient. Dr. Carter truly embodies this model of care. It is a real privilege to be under the care of Dr. Carter, and I highly recommend him.

There were enough choices and variety to get through the 6 weeks, but most of all the changes made to my diet were seen on the scale immediately! The first week alone (when my body was in utter shock), I lost 7 pounds! From that moment on, there was no doubt in my mind that the program worked. In terms of the exercise plan, it is the most efficient 1 hour workout I have ever done. I used to work out regularly on my own prior to the challenge but the classes Body and Soul offer and high intensity workouts where I am performing a perfect mix of cardio and strength moves. The trainers are excellent, personable, and challenged me regularly to increase my weights in order to get stronger. Lastly, the overall atmosphere of the people at Body and Soul is so encouraging. We are all there for the same place and I have to say that I met some great friends along the way. If you are looking to drop some pounds or become leaner, Body and Soul is the place to go. I highly recommend you stop by, check it out, talk to the trainers, and get on your way to a fitter, leaner, healthier you!

Full disclosure, I joined this group of studios. I did a trial run earlier this summer, and just bit the bullet and joined after that. As a result, Ive been to this studio a number of times recently, I found tis location to be perfect some days. Its much smaller than the Tonawanda location, which is good and bad. Good because there are fewer people in each class, bad because its often full for each class. Ive never been here with more than one instructor, and at Tonawanda's there is almost always 2, if not three but I imagine that has to do with size of class. The format is this - They create 6 workouts (Mon-Sat) which they then do for 4 weeks. Each workout is designed to hit different areas of the body, and some days have more weight and less cardio than others, they mix it up. Each class starts with the same tape to get everyone stretched out and ready for the next 50 min. Then there is a short cardio burst to get the blood flowing, and a longer section with some burpees or squats or whatever they think of. Then you pay attention while the instructor shows you what each exercise of the day is. By week four those demos don't take quite as long, but they still cover them all each day, and show you the various different levels for each exercise. Well trained group of instructors. Then the class starts, usually that portion is between 22-25 min. as you go from exercise to exercise. There may be some sort of 3 min end exercise, they often involve squats Ive found. Then the same cool down tape plays and everyone does that. Class ends as the instructor brings everyone into the middle for a "tip of the day". Sometimes those are super interesting, other times they are so-so. I don't think those are spelled out from corporate, I think they make them up themselves, which could explain why some are better than others. They have improved their website experience by joining mindbody, so that's nice. There is another location coming in Cheektowaga this fall. I look forward to checking that out too. This place is the home of the "6 weeks 20 lbs" challenge, and you'll have challengers in most classes. I cannot stress enough how much support these people get from the instructors and members in their goals. Most hit the goals if they show up to class and follow the diet plan. If you want to come try a class, PM me and Ill see if I can help make that happen.
