The first night was a Thursday and the restaurant was not very crowded. However on Friday it was very busy and they were turning away people who did not have reservations. On Thursday night, we both had the lamb and it was really good. We almost ordered it again Friday but decided to try something different. On Friday my wife had the Wensleydale beef and I had the venison from the specials board on the wall. We shared a bottle of French red wine that the chef recommended to us. I requested that the chef prepare the venison the way he thinks it should be prepared. We can both honesty say that this was an excellent meal and a great night out. We will return here the next time we visit Leyburn. Reservations are highly recommended.

As you can imagine we were also pretty hungry after pedalling for a whole day, and we weren't carrying our smartest clothes either. First impression of the bar was that it was very cosy, warm and welcoming. We did feel a bit 'downmarket' amongst the rather tweedy, well-heeled types waiting for their meals but we ordered anyway and found the dining room was very pleasant - candle-lit and atmospheric. The food itself was, thankfully, marvellous and the portions were hearty enough for our ravenous appetites! Although it was probably an expensive option, we thought it was just about worth the money because we enjoyed our meals and the surroundings so much. (Then it was back to the tent!)

The drive is a beautiful one on the right day - do make sure you watch out for sheep and wildlife along the road though, particularly if it comes in misty etc. I visited with my husband, inlaws and nephew and I have to say it was wonderful! We all had a cooked dinner (mine was Roast beef, Hubby had Scampi, InLaws had lasagne and the little one had a plate of chips!). The food was divine, very quickly made and the portions fantastic. A side roomed houses a pool table which provided much entertainment for the little one and we were happy to retire to the comfy armchair seats in the bar, in front of a lovely fire to let our food go down and bet the family dog! Everyone, staff and local patrons were friendly and chatty and we felt very welcome. There is an extensive collection of real Yorkshire ales and some new rather peculiar ones to try! Mainly Theakson and Black Sheep. The accomodation is excellent and there are many different packages to choose from from B&B to self-catering rooms. Christmas and seasonal specials are run throughout the year which are increasingly popular. Located in Reeth it is an ideal place to go and stay for their annual country show which I have also attended and it is excellent! Tan Hill really is the One stop shop for a good holiday or day out in Yorkshire.

But don't worry because you can drive to it and it's well worth the effort. It's definitely a pub for walkers and outdoorsy types and they do some great hearty food and a selection of real ales - mainly from the local Theakstons brewery. There's a collection of animals that live there too; dogs, cats, lambs and mules and they will delight kids and adults alike. You can stay at the Inn or you can camp in the campground alongside and I'm told that you can actually get married there too if you wish. It's even got wifi so being in the highest pub in the land needn't mean you can't get Internet access too. A great, unusual and very friendly place to have a beer or two.
