Nice and convenient with Peets and Starbucks nearby. Also, lots of good eating after you ace the exam

Have taken one class, "Learn to Make Dim Sum"…read more Class offerings were interesting and varied. The website is decent, but the basic info a new student might want was a little buried. For instance, answers to questions like "where is my class, is my class really going to happen tomorrow, and who do I call to ask these questions" were not as easy to discern as I'd have liked. Class was held in the Piedmont High School facility, the main dining hall I believe. The course, instruction, and results of the class were all great. In the end we churned out some very passable Dim Sum classics that tasted authentic.

The beauty of Piedmont Adult School is that you don't get graded for your efforts. However if I…read moredid, something tells me I would do my homework more often and would have actually learned more. All in all, PAS is a great way to brush up on some practical skills or professional skills and have a little fun in the process. Here's a rundown of the classes I've taken from there. *Beginning guitar--Not a bad class. I learned to play a few chords...even transition between two of them in a reasonable amount of time (haha), but that's not really the teacher's fault. I just didn't practice as much as I should have. Grade: B *Beginning sewing--after a few successful efforts of cutting up vintage t-shirts and stitching them up tighter and more low-cut to look more Urban Outfitter-ish, I decided that I really want to learn how to sew. After taking this class, I can't really say I learned how to sew. Seriously the skirt I made was U-G-L-Y! Like the other yelpers mentioned, the teacher wasn't the nicest in the world. Talented yes, but a good teacher no. Her tone was just too condescending. Grade: D *Portuguese: Oi! Como vai? That's all I remember from the class. I was a slacker and only went to 3 of the 6 classes. I liked the class, but I didn't have time to do the homework so I stopped going. The teacher was nice and helpful. I can't really punish the class for my lack of effort. Grade: A *Basic Cooking Class: Fun and helpful. Terry Paulding does a great job educating us on preparing simple seasonal meals. Plus she has a great workspace in Emeryville. This is such a great value for the quality of the class. Grade A+ Updated on 11/19/2007-adding a star *Chocolate Class: Wow a dream come true for me. For some reason I've always thought cooking with Chocolate was difficult. Willow Waldeck has taught me otherwise. She's a wonderful teacher. I walked away from each class with tasty chocolate desserts of bakery/restaurant quality: chocolate truffles, chocolate decadence cookies, almond chocolate torte, chocolate molten cakes. My love for chocolate has only deepened with this class. Grade: A+++

I thoroughly enjoyed the flexible after-work hours where I could relax and concentrate on just a few set tasks that go into making a screen and prints. The small class size felt both intimate and collaborative. I also loved how the teacher provided great materials to experiment with and Kala had all the necessary equipment. I'd love to come back and take more silkscreen later in the year!

It's a rare opportunity for working folks who love art (but never get to do it) to be artistic and creative. We also hoped it would be an opportunity to meet people, relax, unwind, drink some wine, and hang out... but we discovered one fine weekday eve that it was lots of Draw but very little Drink. There are some serious art students in Berkeley! The art instructor was knowledgeable, talented and inspiring, and brought some great materials for us to use - handmade paper, high-quality ink, brushes. We did have to supply some of our own stuff, like scratch paper, pencils, erasers. She taught us new techniques and was very hands-on. A few completed projects even looked frame-worthy. Kala offers great programs if you want to do art in the evening. However, if you actually want to hang out with friends, catch up, and Drink with your Draw, you may want to go to a bar. Just sayin'...!

Name a more productive way to pass the time during a pandemic than to study for the PMP. Before I…read moretook CJ's Virtual PMP Master Class, I was having a difficult time grasping PMP concepts and process framework through self-study. His use of relatable analogies and engaging anecdotes activated parts of my brain that I feel helped convert concepts into my own logical ideas and practical experience, thus helping me to remember the content. If you've ever fallen asleep reading the PMBOK, then this course is for you - definitely 100% worth the investment!! I ended up being the only student in the course due to a group rescheduling and was given the option keep the course or roll into the next one. I decided to take the course and although I'm sure solo is a very different experience vs. group, feel very fortunate to have had this sort of "coaching" type experience. The statement on the course webpage "Guaranteed to run on dates listed" is 100% accurate. Case in point - CJ is a devoted Dodgers fan and instead of watching the world series live, opted to hold the session scheduled for that evening which speaks volumes about his dedication to his students' success and his profession! I didn't even know there was a baseball game on. I still can't believe I was able to memorize earned value management formulas in less than an hour. CJ shares tried and true best practices to help prepare for exam day as well as valuable test-taking approaches that I don't really see anywhere else. After each session I felt even more energized and motivated than the last. Thanks so much CJ!!

However, I'm left-handed, and I soon realized that my left arm really wanted to be bowing. Two instructors later (both with a rather packaged curriculum and both rather dismissive of my "issue"), I still felt incredibly awkward and was on the verge of abandoning ship. Then last summer I found Kaila, who offered a very welcoming introductory phone chat, and a willingness to work with me and a left-handed violin if that's what I wanted. However. With her eye for ergonomics and posture, she was able to select and adjust shoulder and chin rests - and adjust me as well! - and it wasn't long before I could see myself playing a standard violin after all. Good thing, too, since she later went violin shopping with me and found me my perfect instrument. The curriculum is built around whatever I enjoy; some pieces I bring; some she suggests. In addition to technique, she weaves in theory (lacking in my education), harmony, and chord creation, and encourages improvisation - a stretch! I go home with - or she sends me - sheet music and audio recordings so I can play along with a bluetooth speaker (one of which she also recommended). And she has arranged a monthly lesson with another student so we can play duets. She joins in. We make music! Even at a beginner level. After a teaching career in Special Education, I now find my proverbial shoe on the other foot. Kaila is a natural at assessing needs, flexing instruction, and introducing new elements at the right time. All the while being positive, supportive, and encouraging. Lessons just flow, despite my myriad questions. And she is such a lovely person besides. Generous. And Fun. The Best!
