Everything about Thompson Memorial Funeral Home is wonderful! Bruce & his staff are very friendly, professional, & helpful. Recently had a service for my uncle and the staff were all extremely friendly, accommodating, and helpful in every area from making the arrangements, to setting up the service, & the service itself. Victoria, the funeral director, is extremely helpful & friendly via email with obituaries and any other help & questions you may have. We rented a limo for the funeral to the cemetery & the driver was very friendly & personable, & a pleasure to chat with. Bruce & his entire staff made the entire viewing & funeral service go by very easy & smooth and they are a pleasure to work with. Would highly recommend to anyone and everyone. On behalf of many of my family members, we were, to say the least, grossly dissatisfied with Thompson Memorial and their staff. After my father's passing in mid-February I drafted the below email to Thompson several days later. I am posting a redacted version here to share my family's experience. Unprofessional, rude, and total lack of empathy. By the way, we never received even an acknowledgment of our email, let alone an apology (which I honestly did not expect and would be shocked if we had). ---------- Dear Sir or Madam: I write in regards to my family's recent interaction with Thompson Memorial Home, on Wednesday, February --, 2018. Specifically, I write on behalf of my family, including my Father's 93-year-old mother, all of whom were made to feel uneasy, confused, and hurt due to the actions of a member of your staff. As you are aware, my father, -- --, passed on Tuesday, February --, 2018. That same day, I arranged for my family to meet with Thompson Memorial Home at 10 a.m., February --. I also requested that, if possible, my family be allowed to have a one last visit with my Father as some members of my family were not able to be with him when he passed. While I do not have the name of the individual who took my call, she indicated that she conferred with the owner regarding my request, and that Thompson Memorial Home would have no issues accommodating my family. However, upon arriving at Thompson Memorial Home on February the --, we were told by an employee of Thompson Memorial Home in a very obtuse, unsympathetic manner that we would have "no more than 10 minutes". Moreover, that same employee proceeded to shut the doors to the room my Father was in prior to everyone having a chance to say their goodbyes. It became very clear that Thompson's intention was to usher us out of the door as quickly as possible. On behalf of my aggrieved family members, I write to let you know how horribly offended we all were by this treatment. While I realize the request for a final viewing was a last minute accommodation, if Thompson could not professionally and sympathetically accommodate such request - i.e. provide us ample time to say good-bye, without unnecessary commands that we have "no more than 10 mins" - then that should have been explained to me on the phone. I would have discussed such a limitation with my family, and we would have adjusted accordingly. Instead, I was told that it was "no problem". I would think that Thompson would need no reminder that your business obviously involves individuals who are grieving, and more importantly, lost a loved one that they will never again be able to see or speak to. My father battled cancer for 9+ months, and while we were prepared for his passing, he passed very quickly in a span of 3-days. Moreover, several members of our family flew from the other side of the country from California to try and make it to my Father's bedside before he passed. Not being able to do so, they were hoping to have more than "10 minutes" with him. Or, at the very least, not be verbally rushed and seemingly chided by your staff member for wanting to say goodbye. I would hope that Thompson would be sympathetic to these circumstances, but it was abundantly clear that was not the case. At no time did we feel welcome. At no time did we feel as though you understand the grieving process associated with losing a loved one. At no time did we feel comforted; in fact, the atmosphere was nothing short of hostile. I would add that I felt no rush on Thompson's side when we were discussing funeral costs. In fact, payment options, and explanation of costs were the only part of our experience that felt professional. Given that, I am left to believe that Thompson Memorial Home values its monetary gain much, much more than it values providing its patrons with a stress-free, warm, and comforting experience in helping to say good-bye to their loved one. In closing, I write not to seek any type of compensation. Rather, I write to simply inform Thompson Memorial Home that I will be certain to express our gross dissatisfaction with your services to others (online reviews, word of mouth, etc.) who in the future might lose a loved one, and to share with you how deeply offended we were with how we were treated by your staff member. ------ I hope others have, or have had, a more positive experience during their time of struggle, whether it's here or at another funeral home. read more

My Dad pasted away Feb 10, 2021 and was a class act. I want to thank Bob, Bruce, Holly, and Mr Applegate the mortician. The whole process was quick, smooth and they all were very helpful in such a difficult time, they helped me through the hard tasks and decisions, and couldn't be more helpful. My dad was a veteran and they arranged the marines military service at the grave site which was very moving. Any thing we asked for they took care of it , and then some. We had a few issues that needed special attention since our loved one passed away in another state. This was no problem for their staff and took the worry away from us. I really never though I'd be one to write a review of funeral home...but I feel strongly enough about my experience with Thompson to do so. Searching for a funeral home is not a fun task and not something most people have a lot of experience with so it can be very daunting. From the minute I called Thompson, I was more at ease with the process. Not only did Betty quickly deliver the information I requested about their services, but once we decided to go with them, it was an absolutely smooth process. Everyone with whom we interacted was caring but not overbearing. They took care of everything as promised and all very smoothly. My Aunt recently passed and I was helping my cousin make arrangements. I told him about Thompson Memorial Home, but I'd had no previous experience with them. Well, it was the best blind decision we made collectively as a family. The place is beautiful, not dreary or gloomy, and the service was amazing. Our over all experience was held with compassion and integrity and I would recommend them to everyone. Thank you so much, you made the passing of my Aunt much easier to deal with. I am so grateful to Thompson Memorial for their care, compassion and helpfulness. My father passed away, and the contractor who was working on my parents house recommended Thompson Memorial. The building is a beautiful old home with a front porch and awnings. The inside is warm and welcoming. They have one funeral at a time which provides a very nice intimate event for family and friends. They provided my mother with a folder full of helpful information for a surviving spouse. They were so kind whenever I called with questions, and quickly updated the obituary (twice) when I made changes. During the service they were very helpful with organizing the bagpipers, presenting a flag to my mother and calling up the firefighters (my father was a retired firefighter) for a last salute. Additionally the priest, from St. James Church, who said the service was excellent. My parents don't belong to that Parish, but he clearly studied the obituary, got to know my father and provided very comforting and inspirational words. Thompson Memorial Home is simply your best choice when you find yourself in need of funerary services in Monmouth County. My dear father passed way unexpectedly this last week. Bruce Thompson , the owner, was recommended to me by the staff at Riverview hospital who thought it might be the best place as my Mom has alzheimers and Thompson's only serve one individual family at a time, not numerous viewings. I felt this would give my family and our friends the most private of experiences, especially given my Moms condition When I visited with Mr. Thompon, he was extraordinarily kind and professional, and I was immediately comforted by the experience and knew that we had made the right choice. The home itself is a lovely old turn of the century home on Broad Street, well decorated, comfortably furnished, and tasteful. We had a viewing yesterday attended by so many people. We were stewarded so beautifully by mr. Thompson and his wonderful staff, everything was handled perfectly, including today's funeral. Death is something we all experience, and you don't think about things like funeral homes until you are faced with having to.....I was compelled to submit this review as even though we are deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of our father, I was moved to write something as our experience was so profoundly positive. We were blessed to have been under Thompson Memorial Home's professionalism and care this past week, and we are deeply grateful. read more
