I read the review from the irate landowner here made back in 2015 -.and, as a timber buyer myself for several years now, have to defend Gilkey despite being in direct competition with them when bidding on standing timber tracts. If someone can manage to get over $1000 an acre for their timber - it means 2 things. 1. They own a phenomenal tract of top grade hardwood logs and 2. They were not taken advantage of in any way since that was a VERY good and EXTREMELY fair price in today's market with the cost of building an infrastructure just to get the logs harvested in the first place. Broad River is a pulp mill. Gilkey is a log mill. Mills and loggers alike, actually, in a lot of cases LOSE money or barely break hauling pulp since it pays so little compared to the expense of getting it to the pulp gate. This is why you will see a lot of tracts where the logger just left the pulp to lay and rot and it will look like a bomb went off...cause they were obviously losing too much money hauling it off. Knowing what has happened to the pulp market (that has taken a completely nose dive in the last couple of years to the point where a logger practically has to sell their body to get rid of the stuff) - they are lucky Gilkey's guys were even able to haul it off. People always forget to consider the cost of building logging roads, investing in bridges that need to be put up, and any other access that needs to be created in order to just get to the wood in the first place. Gravel and roads can cost thousand and thousands to build before a load even makes it to the mill. Then there is also the high cost of actually getting it logged - and the expense of just firing up a skidder for a day with a good operator let alone the cost of getting it trucked to the gate at 3.25 a mile - which all of this alone can cost a mill as much if not more than the cost of buying the tract. The farther a tract is from a mill...the less money a landowner and mill actually make. I am sure Gilkey has lost and broke even on countless tracts just to keep their operation going and their employees fed as have many timber buyers in this region of the country. Gilkey - including Tim, Jess and the whole rest of the crew...they are simply the best people and one of the best companies anyone can deal with. And...again...I write this as a direct competitor of them when it comes to bidding on the same standing timber tracts. We have gone up head to head against each other many-a-time. I just have to defend them here after reading this man's review...as they have always treated everyone I know with respect and have really stuck their financial necks on the line for any logger and even a fellow timber buyer in hardship or that may be struggling. They are very good and honest people. There's always going to be a landowner here and there you just can't make happy no matter how hard you try. I have had it happen to me a time or two out of hundreds of tracts cut to date...as has every timber buyer out there that's been doing this for any length of time. In my opinion - this was probably the case with this one...cause I honestly have never heard a bad word about Gilkey from anyone - and I work in this industry everyday. Everyone under the sun in this industry knows of them at some level.
