If I die and wake up at This Old Book, I'll know I've been admitted to heaven. Because, books. And books. And even more books. How big is this place? Does that aisle keep going back and back and back? Oh boy, does it ever. With more shelves of books? Thank goodness there are two armchairs about half way through the store. I'm getting palpitations. History and biography and science fiction and cook books and mystery and fiction -- well, not so much fiction for me, but more history -- and oh my, even a kids' area near the back. My hand is itching, longing to grab my credit cards and pile up all that I want at the front counter, charging and charging until my credit card is smoking. This Old Book is That Kind of Place. The scent of printed pages fills my brain. I'm getting dizzy again. Wandering towards the front of this store, and I find racks of posters and old maps. I am fascinated by maps. I pull a few from the rack and stare intently at the little lines and various colors. There are also travel posters. My favorite one is on the wall behind the register -- "travel by TARDIS." I wouldn't mind doing that myself, except that you can't be sure where you're going until you arrive. These are all used books, obviously cared for and loved. Nothing is in tatters. All are clean and fresh and look like they are new. The prices are second-hand book prices, which only sends me further and further into rapture. I pick up a few and tote them under one arm, and force myself to make my purchase and leave, before I lose all control. This Old Book is a treasure. I plan to return when I have more time, and a smaller balance on my credit cards, and allow myself to peruse every aisle, flip upon a few covers, and let myself strike gold. Because the printed word is a gold mine, the kind that has the most value, and I am a devoted prospector. This is a good place. You should shop here, and let yourself wander among the stacks. This is a gem of a bookstore, with hidden treasures in every section. I discovered a 1917 book called "The Menace of Peace" warning that Germany was still a major threat, almost twenty years before WWII. Their vintage children's section is particularly rich. They have a large section of signed books and ephemera. I also appreciate how neat and clean the store is. And well organized. I will come back whenever I can. read more

Independent bookstores are a dying breed, and I thought used bookstores were dead. I was wrong. This gem sits in downtown Grayslake, and it is well-organized with a solid collection of paperbacks and US history. If you are a collector, there is a nice selection for you as well, ranging from classic literature to children's literature. If there is a specific title you are looking for, just ask. Like I said, there is a well-organized selection. We popped in on the recommendation of a friend, and we are planning to come back with our books to sell (for which sellers can receive store credit). read more

Love this place! One of my new favorite local places to visit. They have plenty of books in all the genres. The staff is always so friendly & I believe you can sell your old books to them for store credit! It's a super cozy place, perfect for visiting on your way or just after getting a nice cup of coffee. I have found so many gems in this little (big) book store. Love to visit the new age and zen sections to see what they have newly acquired. They've had some whacky vintage spiritual books that I just think are simply awesome. How to read your tea leaves, vintage astrology books, phases of the moon, spiritual communication books, numerology etc! The zen section is my favourite and I always find books of peace and kindness lingering there. I was able to find a 6 book set of one of my favourite books ever - Life and Teachings of the Masters of the Far East. It's the 68' printing I believe? (Don't quote me on that) and it is in amazing condition. This is an awesome shop to riffle thru when you've got some spare time! I've found some pretty good ones on the vintage paperback cart outside too, old Aldous Huxley printings, a john lennon memoir, a study of sexist society completed in the 1970s. This is a great little local place to shop for a great selection of used books, photo prints, antique magazines, first editions, unique printings, and children's books. Janette is amazing and always has something for you even if you don't quite know what you're looking for. Her hours are longer during the summer Farmer's Market days and she participates in the local author festivals as well. You really are missing out if you've never been here before. read more

A very good selection of Military history and Science fiction. Very freindly and sincere owners.

Ownership of this place has changed hands, otherwise it's what it's always been, a solid if unspectacular used bookstore in downtown Grayslake. The quality of used bookstores depends largely on what individual people (I mean local folk), as opposed to vendors or publishers, bring in for sale; as the other review mentions, TOB is pretty solid on military history and a couple of other areas. There's no shortage of pop fiction paperbacks, certainly. It's worth browsing for good prices on books you might be surprised to find. You will probably be disappointed if you're hoping for good prices on your used books (people are often naïve about how much their books are really worth), but that is typical of used bookstores. Low offers are one reason the prices are low. read more

Great book shop, Janet is very helpful and insightful. You can bring in your unused books for credit and teachers get a discount. Stock is always changing, if your looking for something they don't have she will contact you when it comes in. read more
