They skillfully taught technique, patiently fixed tangles, and brought a great Western Carolina mountain vibe to the whole experience. I'll gladly fish with The Catawba Angler next time I'm in town. He knew the river well and got us onto a bunch of 'honey holes' where the fish were hungry. I am not an experienced angler but Matt was very patient. This was no small accomplishment given all the mistakes made. He set us up with just the right lures, quickly handing us alternative rods already set up when the conditions changed. I caught more fish with Mike than in my last 10 outings combined. This is a life-long memory. We'll be back!

Our experience was very simple. We just payed for two large buckets for our kids to mine for gems…read moreon our final day of vacation. They had a great time and found all kinds of cool gems, crystals, etc.. They definitely seemed to find more (and larger) gems than they did at a different place in the area a year previously, and so our kids definitely preferred this one and thought it was so much better. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. They would identify the proper names for each of the gems and talk with us about North Carolina more generally. I look forward to returning the next time we vacation in NC. I hope everyone can do more to support NC businesses in the area that are still suffering tremendously almost a year after the devastating floods. Thermal city is great!

When we were done removing rocks, both small and large, and the dirt and lighter sand and mica were washed away, we were shown how to swish it in our pans and keep removing the undesirable stuff till you remove everything but the black heavy sand and gold, and he showed us a few bits of gold in the pan! We were too tired to actually pan through the remaining "good stuff" that we ended up with while we were there, so we took it with us to finish back at our condo. Now we can take our time and work on our technique. It was very educational and we had a great time. We just might go back later this week!

There are tables and benches for picnic and lots of shade. Plenty of spots for the grownups to sit while the little ones play. The park opened in December 2016.
