I found this shop completely by accident. It is on the east side of El Camino, north of 25th, next…read moredoor to House of Mayhem? Dance Studio. Art and People Glass is essentially a water pipe store that also sells jewelry, BUT it is NOT your typical head shop. The store was light, bright and clean. The sales people were clear-eyed, smart and knowledgeable. A guy named Sam patiently walked me through their inventory and explained everything. I am embarrassed to say even though I am in my 70's there is a definite gap in my education. Even if you don't 'smoke' this place is definitely worth a visit just to look at the beautiful glass art.

i was stuck in traffic on the el camino in san mateo the other day i looked over and saw this shop…read morethat looked pretty new it had lights in the windows and i could see some bongs in the front. As i was looking in the guy behind the counter waved at me which seemed a little strange(i wasn't used to smoke shop employees being friendly) i didn't have anywhere to be so i hung a u turn and parked in front of the shop as i was getting out i saw a sign that said BUY ONE GET ONE FREE which i was used to seeing at burger king not a smoke shop!!. walking in to the shop was a completely different experience to what i was used to (like most people from san mateo I've grown up going to the cave which meant customer service was kind of wishful thinking and since they were pretty much the only game in town the prices were hella high) the guy behind the counter introduced himself as Sam and asked if it was my first time in there. I said it was and he proceeded to give me a tour of the shop from a variety of scientific bongs to colorful pipes and even some beautiful animal pipes(i couldn't tell they were pipes until he showed me) they have a great selection of concentrate pieces including a few things only they make. It blew me away that not only did they make everything in the shop but that it was all made locally!!! To make the shop even cooler they have hand carved wooden pipes hanging from the walls. The prices were....idk how to say this but ive never seen such low prices for such high quality I even asked if the tags were a misprint. Sam just laughed and said his boss was a little crazzy but that they believed if the customer was happy then so would they. Sam was really chill and talked me through the whole selection including some pretty complicated perculator systems. He even let me test out a bong i liked using a vapor pen to give me the full feeling, I've never had that happen in a smoke shop before and it was sick!!!! He helped me sign up for their mailing list which also entered me in a monthly contest for a free piece from the shop. I found a cool little turtle pipe and with the buy one get one free i also got a really cool glass sherlock holmes pipe!! the whole transaction only cost me $45!!! Even after i was done buying things i stayed in the shop for another half an hour just talking to sam about tattoos and art he was more interested in being friends than just taking my money. its safe to say this is my shop from now on thank you ART&PEOPLE you guys rock!!!!!

What I knew right off the bat was that I needed an expert to teach me the ropes. I visited a few other needlepoint shops in the Bay Area before finding City Needleworks and I can say that without a doubt -- Elena is the best! The first day I came in, she helped me pick my threads, offered decorative stitch advice, and got me all the supplies I needed to be ready for my first project. A solid 20 projects later, I am loving needlepoint as a hobby and frequent City Needleworks! I get my canvases finished here and find that the finished product turns out amazing and with a pretty fast turnaround time. The threads they sell from the shop are premium (no dmc) and they also host stitch nights, so it's nice to come in and just spend time with fellow needle pointers. I would recommend that if you are interested in needlepoint, a wide variety of cute canvases, and tasteful service, you should stop by City Needleworks!

The owner used to work for Needlepoint Inc and opened this store a few years ago. Many Asian designs. Tisha helped me and was so nice. I really didn't need anything but still picked up a few small canvases. Loved the help and selections. I'm not used to purchasing silks as my fibers so it did run up my bill but I'll enjoy the finished project. Located in Downtown Burlingame!
