They have their own cows, including highland cattle, chickens that you can get your own eggs from & a selction of ride on toys for the kids to play on while you shop. The name instantly associated itself with old women, frilly doilys and pots of tea, however don't be put off as Mauds cafe is bang up to date. Presumably like York, the capital city of Yorkshire which also has its fair share of random names for streets and alleyways, certain places must have got their names from some of the characters that lived in them, so Maud must have been infamous for her day. A very slick and polished interior with light stained oak laminate flooring and panels and cream walls is the perfect environment for the well presented but honest and down to earth food consisting of Sandwiches wraps and jacket potatoes and all coffees with a contemporary edge. the place is light and airy but quiet enough to get away from the hustle and bustle of the market in full swing unlike some of the other places in town The staff are extremely friendly and effiecent and always welcoming and remembering of faces. Which is a problem when you constantly have queues. I parked someway up the road and round the corner and called in for a beef salad sandwich. No sign what so ever of any wussy thin sliced processed beef, this was a seriously beefed up sandwich. A lovely soft breadcake filled to the brim (and beyond) with massive chunks of off the joint beef and lots of crisp, tasty salad (I should be writing this to the strains of falling in love again). I was tempted by the hot sandwiches and pasties and the other savouries looked divine but will have to wait for next time. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate were available and reasonably priced.
