It looks a bit creepy up there, like lots of wooden naked furniture limbs, all entangled up and dust coated. The downstairs has fancy re-upholstered lounges and armchairs, while the upstairs has dining chairs. Despite the name, A Pair Of Chairs do sell chairs singly, and they also have coffee tables and cabinets, but the emphasis is undoubtedly on the chairs. This is not a store where you will be left alone, the owners will definitely approach you and gently push sales. There's a lot of teak, a lot of Parker, and a lot of 50s style going on.... It's not everyone's taste, but if you're into mid-twentieth century design (specifically that straight-backed 50s look), then you've found the right strip of shops on Regent street to keep you busy. Here, you can buy the items unrestored or nice and fixed up - depends how much you want to pay. Last time I was here the woman owner told me to supervise the shop while she went upstairs, which was trusting and I took the responsibility seriously (ahem), of course .... nobody came in .... They also reupholster your old stuff, which is nice to file away in the back of your head ("when I am old and have money maybe I will get that chair fixed up....")

A curated shop of bespoke homewares, scented candles, pillows, throws, kitchen accessories, and bar knick knacks. I was sort of in a daze (I had been to Bon Iver's concert the night before) and my aimless wandering led me to discover they had Kip & Co linen sheets! A brand I had been trying to get my mittens on for a while, winter was coming** - so I bought a beautiful crushed blue quilt cover to cocoon myself in bed. The lady working was so lovely and helpful, and we had a rather loud squealing moment when we realised we had BOTH BEEN TO THE SAME CONCERT. I did skip out of the shop, but not sadly into the arms of Justin Vernon because... well, he probably doesn't shop for homewares. ** If you get the pun, we are truly meant to be friends.

They do furniture, rugs, masks, lighting, ceramics, art, glassware, mirrors - a whole range of stuff which listing it seems to take something away from the beauty and exclusivity of them. I also like the fact that they stock a lot of local designers but also collect from overseas so the range in variety of product and taste is wide. The textiles from Africa, Australian artifacts, Egyptian crystal chandeliers and European ceramic pieces - it takes you to far away places without paying for the plane ticket out of here. A little fun fact: Adyar roughly means 'peace' and is named after a river in Chennai, India where the the international headquarters of The Theosophical Society is based. That was fun wasn't it. There's a vast array of books, CDs, DVDs, tarot decks, crystals, incense and all things to do with metaphysics, as well as readings with various mediums, psychics and healers. The service is helpful, but the sections are pretty self explanatory so you can take your time and peruse through the aisles. There's even a seat or two if you want to read a little bit. If you're wanting to find a bit of peace, quiet and maybe some inspiration, take a detour from the hustle and bustle and head to Adyar Bookstore.

It could be the higher rent kicked them out into the new location in Bathurst Street. Still a great store, however towards the end of my Sydney life; I sorely missed the Thursday night talks with prominent book authors. This used to be a scene and so in vogue at the Clarence Street location, and yet they just don't have the space to continue these talks at Bathurst Street which was a real pity. Great quality books of the metaphysical, new age and spiritual kind; giving the major bookstore chains a run for their money. It is great to come here and buy great abundance and prosperity diaries for the year ahead, and the staff are clearly passionate about the subject matter of the books sold at hand here. Positive energy abounds with psychic readings also available. Their nearby competitor in Glebe, Phoenix Rising Books is clearly giving Adyar a run for their money; although this bookstore run by the Theosophical society has created a great name for itself amongst those spiritual souls living in Sydney seeking more enlightenment in a fast paced city oasis.
