Curling at Wharf Ice Rink
Rikin S.

Came here for curling , which seems to be Wednesday of every week? They shut down the rink for all other activities. You should pre-register online or you can try to walk up and put your name down on a list. The people are friendly and the experience was great!

I haven't set foot on an ice skating rink is well over a decade, so I thought "why not try ice skating again"! lol Came on a Monday evening. Was not crowded. You get your skate rentals and pay next to the Water Taxi and not actually down near the rink. You leave your shoes with them in exchange for the skates. All of the staff were super friendly, helpful, fun and nice! I held on to the railings while I went around lol. Got better by the 2nd time around. There was a woman who fell and twisted her leg and the staff on duty immediately went out on the ice to help her and called other staff over. They were prepared and ready to call 911 and everything.

Small family-friendly outdoor ice rink located at the Wharf. It's a really scenic location at the waterfront. Came here on a Saturday with friends and it was much less busy closer to opening time than after 3pm. For the 2023-24 winter season, admissions pricing is at $13 for adults, $10 for children, and $8 for skate rentals. Locker rental is $3 for one-time use (you get a token). This pricing is a little more expensive than the Sculpture Garden and Washington Harbour, but admissions is valid the whole day--great deal if you have your own skates and want to leave the area and come back later in the day. They resurface the ice about every 1.5 hours. My main complaint is its size - of the rink and the overall area. More of a 3.5 star overall. The rental/check out booth is located up a flight of stairs from the rink and they keep your shoes if you rent skates, making it more difficult to walk around without getting your socks wet or get up and down stairs with skates on. There is a decent amount of seating, but it can get busy on the weekend.

There are a handful of ice rinks in Washington, D.C.- this one, Canal Park, Georgetown Waterfront and National Gallery of Art's Sculpture Garden. We've been to all three and here's how this one ranks: 1) Views: Compared to the others, this one offers beautiful views of the waterfront and the Washington Monument peeking out from the buildings. The Sculpture Garden's rink has a stunning view of the National Archives, but this one is even more stunning, especially with the holiday decorations. 2) Price: This one is $15-$18 per person for admission and skate rentals. $6 for a "helper" for kids. (Sculpture Garden is $14-$15, Georgetown is $16-$17 and Canal Park is $15-$16 per person.) 3) Amenities: There are public restrooms onsite and plenty of dining options nearby, including a s'more trailer with a fire pit. For hot chocolate, several options exist, but we enjoyed the thick hot chocolate from Praline Bakery near the Canopy.

Beautiful small rink over the water with views of the wharf and sunsets? Yes please! Thanks to all the staff for working crazy hours in all kinds of weather and for being so friendly all the time. We really appreciate you! Note to skaters - you're not supposed to use your phone on the ice ;)

The rink opened yesterday. So far smooth sailing for the skaters and it is well monitored to ensure people are not playing on their phones on the ice, but rather are ice skating. Save the selfies for later. This is a free skate type rink, so everyone will be doing their own thing. Employees of the rink are nice, but somewhat clueless on much else involving ice skating. There was one guy who knew how to skate and the other 2 didn't know how to. Why hire people to work at an ice rink who don't know how to skate? What if someone hurts themselves and the require immediate attention? Walk on ice over to see how they are or skate??? Skate obviously, in my opinion. If you work at an ice rink, I think this should be a requirement that they know how to skate a little bit. Admission for general public is $10 & is discounted from there for seniors, active military and children. Come out and enjoy! The best part is that there is no time limit on skating.

I turned around and walked right out of there without investigating further. The vibes were off in that bathroom, I can tell you that much. They seemed alarmed that I was trying to come in there at all let alone with a four-year-old, even though the bathroom was a public bathroom.... I don't know how this place can call itself a roller skating rink with that horrible floor. The skates were plastic and awful. I really feel ripped off and extremely disappointed. The chairs were disgusting. I washed all of our clothes and coats as soon as we got home. I will never be returning. Such wasted money. In addition there was a DJ playing music and it was so loud. My kids were extremely overstimulated and just yelling by the time we left, then complained of headaches on the car ride home.

Honestly, it's a good spot to host anything from a friend's hangout to a large party. However, I have qualms about coming here again. The work event was a pickleball tournament. Although the space itself is clean, it gets so hot indoors - regardless what activity that you do. Furthermore, we got food catered, and it wasn't the best quality. Although you don't come here for food and drinks, I would recommend other places for that. If you can deal with the heat indoors and want to do a fun activity in DC, I would recommend going here.

I overheard him speaking to one of the favorite and well known skate instructors with a nasty tone. During this same visit he got snappy with me as well. MUST'VE WOKE UP ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE BED. I heard many complaints about how he runs out on the rink floor policing in an aggressive manner. He also has passed this behavior on to his Saturday afternoon skate guard. Customer service everything these days. Skating is supposed to be a therapeutic and safe place. I've tried many times over the last few months to visit this place but I do believe this is my last visit. I'd rather drive to Laurel and be treated with respect.

Before we came, I sent messages via their web site asking for rules and whether inline skating was allowed (just to be sure) and they never replied. We drove all the way down to find that they do not allow inline skating. The guy in the front desk was pretty snobby. He did offer a small room for inline skating and we accepted but we had to pay a full 10 dollars to skate around a small room instead of a full regular size rink and I didn't think it was fair.

In all seriousness, it's a decent-sized skating rink with cute snowflake lighting above and nice surrounding shops and eateries, such as TJ Maxx, DSW, and Basic Burger. Actually, it's on the smaller end, but I think there's a limit to the number of people that can be out there at once, since we were given stickers to display while we were in the ice, and these stickers had a time at which our reservation expired (I think). My bros, my bro's gf, and I had a blast going 'round and 'round, initially holding onto the rails (at least my bro's gf and I had to), before acclimating and being able to skate closer to the middle of the rink. We made reservations on the phone about a day prior, and were tended to and able to get our skates immediately when we got there. They have these standing training wheels that you can skate with (some look like penguins). I don't really know how to describe them or what to call them besides that. Anyway, my bro's gf was more gradual with gaining her balance on the ice, and she thought it was unfair that only little kids were allowed to be able to use these training equipment. I noted a few skate guards on the ice; good to know there are individuals out there presumably to ensure skaters' safe leisure. After skating for about an hour or so, we enjoyed some hot chocolate and ice cream (never too cold!) at Mimi's ice cream parlor just outside the rink.

The ticketing system IS CONFUSING AND NOT designed well at all. There is no phone number, so hopefully you can read and use the internet. You need to register for a DPR account, and upload proof of residency if you reside in DC and want the resident pricing. The people who verify your residency are working weekdays. The site states it may take 7-10 days to be approved. Everyone who creates an account will automatically be a non-resident until they're approved. If you're planning to participate, CREATE YOUR ACCOUNT WEEKS BEFOREHAND. Other than that, it's pretty simple. The staff scans your ticket upstairs, you get your rental skates and go on the ice! I was not informed that figure skates existed. That would've been helpful since the hockey skates were a bit uncomfortable for me. I'm glad they have options though.

It's not Metro accessible, explaining why many people don't know about it, but there is a large free parking lot next door as well as a Capital Bikeshare dock. The space itself is clearly built in a different era, but they have maintained it well for not having a lot of funding. A non-profit runs the arena and it is mainly used for non-profit programming for youth who ice skate. However, they keep the ice rink open every day from 9am-4pm and rentals are affordable ($5 for adults and $4 for seniors and youth). If you're looking for a fun, family activity in DC, check the Ice Arena out. It's such a fun thing to do!
