I first met Rachel at the BBC Good Food Show, where she showed me how to pipe icing properly. When I heard she was opening up, I couldn't have been more excited. Even more so when I found out just how close it was to me. (So much so I have been for the past 2 Saturdays and am most likely going twice this weekend...) This is a bakery, selling cake, cupcakes, tray bakes, teas, coffees and soft drinks. There are a variety of gluten free options available. The bakery is through the back, so the place smells of cake permanently. I've sampled both the red velvet and salted caramel cupcakes. The red velvet was gorgeous, although I loved the salted caramel cupcake more. The centre was filled with ooey gooey caramel. The tea was better than the coffee, coming in individual gorgeous glass teapots. A cup of earl grey is the perfect accompaniment to a piece of cake. I love the quirky antique sets that everything gets served in. Rachel also does custom cakes and cupcakes for all occasions, ranging from weddings, birthdays to graduations. The bakery accepts cash and cards. No outdoor seating (yet!)

We bought carrot cake and it was excellent. Spot on with the buttercream frosting. We will definitely be back. They offer Gluten free and Vegan options. We did see one Gluten free option out but I didn't see any vegan. But it's nice to know if you want to order a cake for a friend with an allergy.

I walked in and people were sitting down have cake and coffee, there is a good seating area downstairs but also on a mezzanine level as well. They have salads, sandwiches, coffee, tea and soft drinks to serve alongside numerous cheesecakes, frangipane tarts, tart tatins, eclairs, Creme brûlées, macarons and more. All very reasonably priced. The tarts and cakes come in around £2.50 and the macarons are 50p each (with a discount if you buy more). I couldn't resist buying a pistachio macaron & it was VERY good. Thumbs up from the macaron connoisseur here. I also bought a pear tart tatin, an apple tart, a passion fruit mousse cake and a chocolate and pistachio eclair. All cakes were lovely. Definitely coming back, this time will sit in for lunch and grab more cakes to takeaway :) Will probably turn into my new favourite coffee and cake destination. I wish there were more cakes though. Like LOTS of cake. In my mouth preferably.

Food There is quite a selection to choose from, panini's, cakes to even breakfasts, there is a fantastic display tempting you to buy one of their freshly baked cakes. I've not had the chance to dine in always in a hurry and take out is sometimes best option. Atmosphere This place has a nice atmosphere and vibe to it, but reminds me of much of the past days where you had to Queue and that just reminded me so much of school dinners and that wasn't a happy memory. Service Is not always service with a smile it may just be me but on the last two visits I've ended up with a grumpy goat for a server, who will serve someone else that is in the line before me even though I'm standing right at the till. I like the food served here and want to come more often, but the grumpy staff make me avoid this place.

Glaswegians, your cafes have definitely spoiled me and I can't find anything that compares to this in the U.S. When you walk in, you automatically get this cozy and warm feeling. Try to get a seat in the upstairs dining area, because this is where you will feel the most warmth. I also like sitting in the bar stools by the window because I like looking outside at the rain. If you find yourself waiting for a table, just take that time to browse the pastries, savory foods laid out, and even their selection of cookbooks. Their selection of cake and tarts change daily, but if they have leftovers one day then they serve the leftovers the next day until they are gone, but a lot of the time their pastries sell out on the first day. Bonus to this is that your pastries are definitely fresh! But the pastries still taste good even if they are a day old. Trust me. My go-to pastries were the Belgian Chocolate Cake or the vanilla custard tarts. This cake has hazelnuts inside of it and is served with raspberries, chocolate bits, dusted with sugar on top. If you love chocolate, this cake is the way to go. The vanilla custard tarts reminded me of home (because I would get Egg Tarts at Chinese bakeries and this vanilla custard tart tasted just like a egg tart) The only difference is that the tart at Kember & Jones had flaky layers of crust, which made the tart even better. My go-to drinks are hot chocolate or the Moroccan Fresh Mint Tea. The hot chocolate is served with foam and little chocolate bits on top. The Mint tea is served in a clear glass, but it comes hot (which was weird because I didn't think you would serve hot drinks in a glass) but I understood why because it has a bunch of mint leaves in it that changes the color of the drink to a light tan. It's cute and if you have a sore throat, it will make you feel better. Other things that I have tried and loved were the Warm Waffle (because it was served with syrup and fresh fruit), the French Lemonade (It was pink lemonade with a little bit of sourness), and the macarons (They make different ones each week. Try all of them because they go fast! I have to say during Christmas time their Christmas pudding one tastes pretty good, too.) Last thing to note is that the staff is very nice. I never really feel pushed to leave. They are polite and attentive.

This is essential preventive maintenance to avoid being sucked in by the goodies on display in the window. Today I forgot the protective ritual, and before I knew it I was standing in the queue behind a lady with a pram, salivating like a dog over all the yummy stuff on display (metaphorically speaking of course - what kind of a slob do you think I am?) Veggie sausage rolls, slices of pizza, flapjacks, tarts, gluten-free cakes, flower-pot bread... (wait, what was that last one again?) - for such a small place they produce a fabulous range of tasty treats to tickle your taste buds. There's no coffee and no seating, but they are, after all a BAKERY, people! Not a coffee house. If you want somewhere to sit, cross the road and sit in Mansfield Park, or on one of the outdoor exercise machines as I saw a lady doing as she scoffed her cake - perhaps the mere presence of the machine was counterbalancing the calorific consumption in her head? Great bakery, and a fantastic addition to the Hyndland Street bohemiana.

I come in here just about every time I am strolling through the neighborhood. The bakers are very friendly! Be aware of the limited hours if you are checking-out MHB for the first time. My favourite savory treats are the tomato basil slice and you can't go wrong with any of the rolls. I even like the vegetarian lentil roll, and I'm as carnivorous as people get! I'm sure many of the other items are good too; I just haven't tried them because I get hung up on the delicious things I have already eaten! Onto the important stuff: CAKES and PASTRIES! I love their chocolate volcanoes! I have a new found love for My Home Bakery's lemon-cranberry cake. You also can't go wrong with the almond-crusted strawberry bakewell. My favorite fruity item is the raspberry crumble dowsed in powdered sugar. And if you can't decide, you may need to order a 'party box' to figure it out (see photos). If I am there in the morning the cinnamon brioches are hard to pass up! I got my friend Jeevan hooked on them too! Long story short, there is a reason why the front door says, "diets end here!"

I dragged Stu out of his festering pit and we made our way to Grant's the Bakers. I had passed it several times while sprinting for the train and the smell emanating from the bakery almost caused me to forget all about the train and go and live in there. Hot rolls and hot drinks are available to take away at very reasonable prices. At 10.30 on a Sunday, the queue was out the door and spilling untidily onto the street. Builders, locals and hungover tramps waited patiently in front of the cake filled counter and sizzling hotplate of over-processed meats. The smell was fantastic. Thanks to the two wee wummin behind the counter the queue moved quickly. We bought 6 totty scones and hastened home to fry them! They were big, misshapen and had an almost meaty bite to them. This makes them high up there in my Totty Scone Hall of Fame. Yes, I do actually have a Totty Scone Hall of Fame. I am rather a freak, I do fear. Next time I think I'll go for an iced donut.
