Upon arrival we were given a room. The room didn't have a hot tub as per our request. Went back to reception and were given our correct room. The personnel at reception (3) really incompetent. Next morning at breakfast, total fiasco. Understaffed, wrong orders, apparently because staff had not arrived at work. Second day of stay, for some reason, room key wasn't working. After reprogramming key, got to room and it wasn't made...linens, towels, etc. Returned to front desk, and was told cleaning crew was gone. They gave us towels!. Only bright spot was Heather at breakfast. Very qualified and witty to say the least. Room was nice. Unfortunately, will be the last time we stay there, especially for the price charged per night $400!!!! read more

It was a volatile rating in the sense that there were definitely moments I wanted to give it a one-star but I finally landed at 3 because of the breakfast server. - Check-in process for our one night stay was smooth but tasteless. We got put into the main guest house on the second floor. The staff at the reception did not seem very welcoming. - The main guesthouse has its old charm but we were absolutely freaked out by the two mannequins sitting outside. We were told later on by the staff that they were supposed to be Prince Charles and Camilla (why them!?). - At night, this guest house feels quite scary. We stayed for 1 night on a Monday which the bar and the restaurant were closed. Apparently, we were the only ones staying there and it felt empty and haunted... - The hotel rooms are definitely dated and can use some upgrades. The floors are creaky and there was a huge gap under the room door. - The only thing that turned our experience around was the breakfast next morning. Not due to the food itself but because of how attentive, kind, fun the breakfast waitress was. She was a ball of energy running around serving everyone on her own. I cannot remember her name now but she was the star of our experience. Thank you! Overall, I wouldn't come back to the Waring House unfortunately. read more

Had such great expectations but meh. Our king size bed was so old that it was divided by a large hump - might as well have been sleeping in two singles. We ate at the pub the Sunday night, to listen to some live music "come early to ensure you have a table". Granted it was a Sunday night but I expected the music to still have a little zing (Frère Jacques on guitar doesn't have any at all). The pub food was ok, could swear the solitary mushroom in my partner's plate came from a can - reminded me of childhood. My shepherd's pie was decent. There's a free breakfast included with your stay- my partner's order came with sausages. She couldn't finish them and offered me a taste, bleh. Our visit to Prince Edward County was salvaged by the beauty of Lake Ontario, a stop at a winery, a few walks. Next time we'll stay and eat elsewhere, and find a place with interesting music. read more

Absolute Garbage. What the menu describes and what you get are two totally different items. Both our meals were terrible. My chicken was like well overcooked leather. No apple in the "apple slaw" with kraft salad dressing. Sweet potato fries out of a McCain bag. All this and I only had to wait for an hour and 20min. Asking the kitchen questions about what's in the food elicited an attitude of go away you're bothering me. The whole vibe of the place was one of "go away", we are NOT here to help. I must have hit a bad weekend. Reception was not very welcoming. The pub and restaurant staff were great and one person even helped me get my suitcase to my room as I was in a building with no elevator. The restaurant appeared to be very short staffed in the mornings but the person in charge was gracious and was working very hard to satisfy everyone. Pray nothing goes wrong when you are there. I ate supper at the restaurant and 5 hours later was violently ill. I could not get anyone on the phone to get more toilet tissue in the middle of the night. The place was dead and no call was routed to security. At 7 in the morning I finally got through to security to deliver a roll of tissue. In the morning I went to reception to report two things: that I had become violently ill during the night after my dinner there and that there was no way to get toilet tissue in the middle of the night. There were no extras in my room beyond 1 refill which is not enough when one has....you know, massive sickness. The manager informed me that I could have gotten ill from food I ate during the day elsewhere. There was and still is no acknowledgement that maybe, just maybe, it happened after my meal there. I was fine before supper. And all I asked for was the following: 1. that the chef be notified that I had become ill in case something was off and to prevent others from the same malady 2. I asked for a refund for my supper from that evening. The Waring House management could have ended this complaint simply with a refund and the amount was not large at all. But I guess giving a refund means acknowledgement of my complaint. I struggle to think where else I might have eaten something that would cause massive diarrhea and vomiting at 11:30-2pm. Nonetheless after my persistence and follow ups with the Better Business Bureau and Picton Public Health, I got my small refund of 26.59 after 4 weeks of difficult communication and often, non-communication. They insist my sickness was not from their dinner. There is no way to prove this either way as I do not possess samples of my illness. I find it hard to collect a sample while being so ill. I am a senior who is in good shape. Compassion and better management skills would have made this situation disappear quickly. Perhaps the Waring House is more preferential with its mainstay, weddings and big catered events. The grounds are lovely, and people seem to enjoy themselves there. And the service staff, apart from reception and the manager, were stellar. read more

We went here for a Christmas Present from our son. The accommodations were great as the inn was empty . Spacious room, all the amenities in the room. We are in the pub and had a lovely breakfast that was included in our accommodation. It must be great when not -18 outside. We would certainly return when the weather was better . For starters, service was extremely slow. We came in and ordered drinks first, took 20mins. I think I've seen snails copulate at a faster pace. And that was pretty much the highlight because after downing our drinks we waited for 1.5 hours. Our kids were getting hungry and we finally had to ask our server for some bread. To be honest, it was probably the best meal the kids have ever had because they scarfed it down in no time despite the bread being cold And sad looking. Then our food finally arrived. The steak was so well done that there was not an ounce of blood left in the meat. This is not easy to do, hats off to the chef. When we told our server who was wearing a t-shirt with "be kind" on the back, he simply said "sorry for that". The cookery class was very overpriced, more like a do-it-yourself session than a class, and we never did receive the souvenir aprons. They weren't available at the time, and despite leaving our address and phoning several times over the subsequent two months, we still haven't gotten them. At this point, I'm so disappointed with the experience, I'm just as happy to not have a reminder. This place has certainly gone downhill, and customer service is at the bottom of their priorities. Cookery School.....3 hour class, Sushi 101. Chef Jordan delivered an enlightening and interesting discussion, taking us through the basics of sushi....including knives, sticky rice, rice vinegars, soya sauces, wasabi.....just some of the topics I can think if right off the top of my head! After his demonstration we proceeded to make our own rolls using a variety of wonderful, fresh ingredients. Tempura shrimp, smoked, as well as fresh salmon, veggies, and real (not imitation) crab! Afterwards the Chef recommended drinks that would pair nicely with our meal. Then we sat down to enjoy our meal with a complimentary drink. This was a fun class and I would recommend the cooking classes here. I will definitely sign up for another class. This is also a great idea for a gift! read more

My family took our mother here for dinner on June 22. The meal was combination of terrible experiences. Dinner was set for 6 pm in Amelia's Garden for 7 people Before I begin I'll note that the table next to us sent back their glass because there was lipstick on it from the last person We were advised upon making reservations that this was "fine dining" and appropriate attire was required. We showed up to see an assortment of people with ripped jean shorts, sandals, lots of T-shirts and casual wear (wouldn't have mattered to us if they had just never highlighted it) The menus that were passed out had differing prices for the same items. They gave us old and new menus by mistake we were told. Oops. My wife told me that she had just finished the blandest risotto she could remember. She was dumping salt on it to add taste Caesar salads were ordered to start. Dressing was terrible and had little taste - which is hard to do with a Caesar dressing Three of us had the steak frites. A thick piece of sirloin (which is a low end steak to start with). All of them had a 1/2" thick rind of fat along one side of it that should have been removed in the kitchen. Steaks were ordered medium rare and they all came out medium well, and I'm probably being generous here. They were very tough, which in hindsight should have been expected since it was sirloin but then why feature a $38 sirloin in a place like this? A fine dining restaurant could have NY strip or a ribeye or filet mignon available if they are also going to include a piece of sirloin. Initial drinks took about 20 minutes to reach the table. Appetizers about 45 minutes and the actual meal didn't arrive until ~7:10 pm. The waitress told us that a lot of people had shown up at the same time and the kitchen was busy. Amelia's Garden is a small restaurant and we were eating under a reservation at 6 pm (a.k.a. 'dinner time'). We couldn't understand how a restaurant could be surprised by a lot of people at 6 pm My brother told the waitress separately that we were there for my mom's birthday. She said that she could then have a complimentary dessert. The dessert came out but they forgot the candle! When the bill came the waitress ran my credit card for the whole table. Bill was $460 which seemed high but I went with it, which was a big mistake in hindsight. Meanwhile my wife looked at the bill. As transaction finished she realized that they had overcharged me. They included 2 appetizers, 3 entrees and a drink that our table never ordered. They also billed me for my mother's "complimentary" dessert (not a big deal if they hadn't told us they'd give her a dessert). Their lamb shank may be delicious but we never ordered it. When they tried to reimburse the whole bill it was declined because the amount, over $500 with tip, was over the maximum the restaurant was allowed to refund. The manager came over and used her iPhone to figure out how much to reimburse and ended up giving back $180 out of $500. While refunding me the money, she told me twice that she was refunding me the items we didn't order plus tax and tip. Her point was that we should then leave a tip for the waitress. After all of time spent to correct the bill, we noticed that the final bill still included a charge for a the 'complimentary' dessert. :). We had an assortment of bad food, slow service likely due to the kitchen, and were charged for a number of items we didn't even order and then billed for a free dessert and we were reminded twice to be sure to tip our server? I'm sure this was a great place once upon a time. But it seems like it's the only 'fine dining' option in the area of Picton. If this restaurant existed in a city with lots of options I would be very surprised if they continued to exist with experiences like this. Having read the reviews from other customers I am shocked that they are describing the same restaurant that we endured. This was truly a birthday celebration to remember. read more

We visit The County every summer and have eaten at both Amelia's Garden and the Barley Room on many occasions. The reason we kept going back is because of the great food we had about 5-7 years ago. On one of our visits to the pub, they had an exceptional seafood pasta for lunch (i don't usually order seafood pasta at restaurants as it tends to be disappointing on some level - this was not the case). We were so impressed by some of the dishes we've had that we forgave the less-than-stellar meals (and service) we experienced on the visits that followed in the last 3 years, hoping it would get better. It did not. Our last visit was July 2020. While we empathized with staff dealing with covid, the service was very bizarre and the food was terrible. We sat outside at Amelia's Garden. I ordered the braised lamb shank, which was approximately $30 and I don't remember what hubby had (whatever it was, it was likely very forgettable). All I know is that we were asked to put on our masks every time our server came to drop off or pick up something. This is the only food and drink establishment we attended during covid that made people sitting outside put on masks throughout the meal. Furthermore, my $30 lamb shank came on a paper plate and was just meh. After so many hopeful visits, we have officially given up on this place. read more

This complex of several buildings is an inn, two restaurants, and in summer an event center and kitchen garden. This review has mainly to do with the two restaurants. The restaurants are also under their own separate listings. The more expensive one is Amelia's garden and the windows on one side of the restaurant overlook a charming garden. Reservations are always recommended, though if you come later in the evening there is often space unless it is prime tourist season. They will begin at 5:30 and usually take their last reservation for 8:30 p.m. If you arrive any later than that prepared to be reminded in a half friendly half annoyed way that you are eating late and putting the staff to inconvenience. The food is delicious almost across the board. The meat is always cooked to the right done-ness depending on your taste. The salads are well balanced affairs of greens and dressing with complex punchy chutneys or sides. The apple cider cheddar cheese soup is odd in your mind but delicious in your mouth. The fish dishes are less stellar than the meat ones. There is a nice selection of dessert on any given night and they have all been good. In the summer greens and herbs from the on-site garden are used in the dishes. The cheaper of the two restaurants onsite is called the Barley Room and is a bar style menu and serves local as well as a selection of beers. There is frequent live singing and other entertainment on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. read more

Highly recommend their elopement packages. It was perfect! The staff were all amazing, the cabin looked like a storybook land and the experience was so seamless. All we needed to do was show up and enjoy the day. They went above and beyond by having our names on their sign out front, to sewing a button on my dress that fell off. They even provided witnesses since we wanted it private. Our photos turned out great, the 3 course meal was fantastic. We are already looking forward to visiting for future anniversaries! read more

Decor could really use an update, and I do not believe it to be wheelchair accessible, many minor repairs needed throughout... but otherwise fine. Food and service make it a great spot!! read more

The Waring house has always been one of our favourite pubs to visit when in the county. Always great food good selection of drinks local and pub usual beers and friendly yet not intrusive staff. I really like the Barley Days Pub at the Waring House. It has a very nice relaxed atmosphere and in the warmer months you can eat outside in their screened-in porch. They do a great job of serving local food and beverages. They have a number of beers on tap from the local brewery. I've had the county burger which features local cheese and bacon in local maple syrup. It was very good. I also recommend the fish and chips; the fish is made with Lake Ontario perch. read more

We were attending a family reunion with relatives from Alberta to Nova Scotia. It was a great weekend except for the evening of Aug. 8th when dining at the Waring House Restaurant. We did have about 25 in our party with reservations but the service was poor with cold food and an hours (at least ) wait for the bill. Then to be hit with the added gratuity was a joke. Worst service ever at this pub. Our party of 8 arrived a little before 6pm and was advised of a 45 to 60 minute wait. We sat at the bar with a drink to wait but after 45 minutes the wait had become indeterminate and after an hour we were told we were never going to get a table. We left. We ate dinner in Amelia's Garden both Friday and Saturday; only because the bar was packed and very loud. Friday night, the soup was tepid when it arrived (Crab) and there was no crab meat in site. The dinners were served on cold plates so needless to say the food didn't stay warm for long. The waitress was pleasant and busy so we didn't complain (we probably should have). Saturday was the exact same menu except the one soup was Asparagus & Potato (never really tasted asparagus). Again the dinner plates were ice cold, when we said something to the waitress she said they were kept under the heat lamp, it was suggested that maybe someone should turn the lamp on. Again we rushed through our dinner before it was too cold to eat. One night, might be a fluke but two nights in a row? It also bothered me that we were basically told the plates weren't cold when in fact they were very cold to the touch. There was also a problem with two desserts. The no-flour chocolate cake was as hard as a rock. They did apologize and suggested another cake. The cheese on the cheese tray for dessert tasted like it had been sitting out for days, it was so dried out there was no way to cut a slice to put on the crustinist..the fruit was fine. I have never had a problem here in the past but I haven't been out there for several years, something has changed in their kitchen..standards are not as high as they use to be. read more

We were placed in The House Next Door and the room could definitely use an update, the room had an odour (had to open the balcony door to air it out), there was wine spilled on the walls, and there were hairs left from the last occupants. I was there last weekend for their version of "countilious". We had reservations & was looked after about 5 minutes after arriving. The restaurant was full & even the pub. We were seated at our table, and given bread after some time. The fresh bread was delicious & the butter that accompanied it. Only waiting almost 1 hour from our reservation time we finally got our appetizers; two of us had cesear salad & one of us had pea soup. The salad was not fresh anymore & was limp, and only till the end of it I saw a piece of lettuce that was not edible. It lacked taste, & should be more tasty with garlic etc. Half an hour after that we got our main meals; one had pork tenderloin which she mentioned was sooooo tough, my guess is that it was overcooked. The other person had chicken which she said was good. I had the strip sirloin which was good but not prepared how I wanted it . I requested medium well & it was still pink/red on the inside. I was afraid to send it back because it would be another half hour before got it back or longer. With the bad service we were receiving we decided to take our desserts for take out. The waitress didn't bring it, so I asked another waiter what happened to our dessert...we have been waiting for half hour for it. What a mistake thinking take out would be faster...could have had the creme brulee. I don't know if they were understaffed, or waitresss incompetent/new or waitress needs to be retrained about "service". With people having reservations, management should know how to staff the restaurant accordingly. We were visiting a friend & felt for the price we paid $35 + tax, more than Toronto, it really was not worth it. I was upset also since the table behind us came later & was served their appetizer before us. The chef came around at the end and asked us how our dinner was & we told him. His explanation was the waiter, and didn't even offer a discount or anything for the rotten service we received. How does this establishment expect repeat customers with this awful service? read more
