I came onto Yelp to see when Vortex closes and what's with these bad reviews?? I've been going to Vortex for almost a decade. I've bought dozens of LPs and 7" records. I bought my turntable there. Ive even bought a shirt and some earrings from there. I've always had a great experience and a great conversation with Bruce or his help every time I walk in. I'm Latino as well so I can assure everyone there's ABSOLUTELY NO inappropriate behavior happening (see a previous 1-star comment). Vortex has a great variety of genres, everything is well laid out and easy to navigate. I'm always asked if I need help or if I'm looking for something in particular. Bruce has even special ordered me a few records he didn't have in stock. This is a great local business (in operation since the early 90s!) to support and I 1000% recommend stopping by. read more

I was there for an pop-up painting event with around 30 people. The staff was amazing at keeping up with such a large group, especially the bartender - cudos to him! They have great menu with a few really tasty vegetarian options. Get the veggie sliders - you won't regret it! Note: the place is a bit tricky to find, but it's in the same parking lot as Roth's directly across from Sherwin Willams at the back of the Mexican restaurant. I really want to like this record store, a small business in a small town and all. Don't get me wrong, for a small town and small business it's an okay place. For a record store it's not amazing and the owner doesn't know as much about the music as he wants you to believe. The incense smell that permeated the day we visited made me wonder what he was masking. My guy called it a HeadShop after leaving, and given there was a back room we didn't enter and all the body piercing jewelry and incense selection.. it could be? Either way, I won't drive to McMinnville to go back to this place and not sure I would stop in again, when in town. But if you are a local and it's your only options.. sure.. read more

The Vortex - Records - Music & DVDs Near Me - McMinnville, Oregon

I'm a fan of Vortex Records. The selection is good and the staff have always been friendly to me. The prices are a bit on the high side compared to what I'd pay ordering online, but it's common for me to find something here that is back ordered online so I don't mind paying a few dollars more and saving shipping and tax (as a Washington resident). A few other reviews suggest the staff is unfriendly, perhaps discriminately, towards Latinas. I'm not Latina so I can't say this didn't happen, but I can say the friendly person who helped me check out on my most recent visit was Latina. She was amazing and super helpful. If you listen to vinyl and come to McMinnville I think you will like this place. I have visited McMinnville once or twice a year for many years now. I've made a point to stop here every time for at least the last three years or so and have never been disappointed yet. read more

In the past, when they were located by Dollar Tree, they always carried the music that I liked. One employee was sort of rude, the other was always kind. Now in their new location, I avoid them and only look at their window displays. read more

Not sure what all these other reviewers are talking about, this place is great! Great selection for a small store, very friendly staff as well. Reasonable prices, definitely cheaper then most online retailers. Definitely recommend and will be back for more! read more

Great diverse selection for such a small location. This is a must stop. Just picked up a 1976 original pressing of Steely Dan's the Royal Scam. Fantastic! They have a good blues selection and a good selection of 70's and 80's rock. And always helpful staff - Sophie was awesome. Check it out. read more

Owner was a complete jerk. I inquired about a poster in the storefront with a $100 price sticker and asked him if it was an original. He said it was but it wasn't for sale. I asked why then it didn't have a NFS (Not for Sale) sticker as some other collectibles did.. He gave me an angry rambling diatribe with no clear answer. i agree with a prior reviewer don't even set foot in this store. Owner is complete opposite of "Oregon Nice" and an embarrassment to other wonderful shop owners of McMinnville. read more

I can say with confidence I have never been spoken to with such disrespect from an employee at any establishment let alone the owner of a business. He spoke to my sister and I in a demeaning, patronizing, childlike tone that completely appalled us. Unprofessional and quite honestly embarrassing. Weekend getaway to McMinnville. Stayed at McMennamin's Hotel, wine tasting, and a concert at the casino down the way. Great little town. Vortex Records was THE only negative vibe of this Hallmark-like town. The owner was just plain rude to me. Spoke to me as though I were a child. Curt and unfriendly. Condescending as can be. I was there with my guy--I'm Latina and he's definitely not--and my guy was treated WAY nicer and friendlier. When the owner spoke to me in his rude way, my guy and I exchanged sideway looks. "What's his deal?" I know I could have gotten my album for much less online, but I do believe in supporting local businesses. I regret that purchase now. I will not return nor recommend this place! Owner was rude and unprofessional. My wife and I went into his shop with the purpose to add to our 45 year old LP collection. My wife found an artist she was interested in and while she was inspecting the merchandise for purchase, the owner who was hiding in the back room, came out and rudely snagged the LP out of my wife's hands as if she were a toddler. I guess he wanted to take his ball and go home? The selection is mediocre at best with titles in yard sale condition. People who can't treat others with the same respect as they would like to be treated don't get any money from me. Good luck JERK! read more

We gotta have more incense! No, no we don't. Every time there is a record store that burns incense I will review, and it's never good. Nobody wants those stinky records now and nobody wants to hang out in a shop that they can't breathe in. This will actually help your sales, I promise. I thought they gave me the wrong size squishy plugs as it turned out I did not know the size of the earring I needed replaced. I understand they sold me what I asked for and they don't do returns on body jewelry for hygiene reasons. My issue is when I went back to POLITELY ask about it, the owner, Bruce, was incredibly rude and derogatory towards me. I wasn't angry or mean but he definitely was. I have shopped record stores in cities on both coasts and in-between (not quite Hank Snow, just sayin'), and this place is top shelf. Terrific selection, great quality. But wait- if they don't have what I want, or even better, when I'm not sure what I want, the two gentlemen who run this outfit will assist in research and, if it can be got, get it by Friday. read more
