The people who were so knowledgeable and supportive of us at the outset are mostly gone now. While I believe the staff is well-intentioned and trying, there is definitely a loss of expertise and skill. Cogir is struggling to hire a new executive director, and the loss of strong leadership is likely contributing to the decline. My Dad still likes living there and we are still hoping a strong ED will come take the reins and get this once excellent place back on track. Until then I cannot make any recommendations either way, and I leave it up to the families to come to Cogir and decide for themselves whether it is a good fit for their loved one.

They…read moremust take issue with the facts as presented by the MarinIJ then because it's simply what was reported. Is the news itself inflammatory? Isn't this relevant to the quality of care? This is Yelp folks. ----- Since Yelp has seen fit to shadow censor my question to the business, (shows with my login but not when someone else is logged in or when nobody is logged in) which actually would have been more discreet I am resorting to a full review to ask this - unless it becomes censored or taken down. This is an open invitation to Cogir to comment on what they've done to rectify the delayed reporting of alleged rape of a resident by Michael Andre Shipe as reported by the MarinIJ in June of 2023 in the link. The article stated "The care home was required to submit a "plan of correction" this week that included staff training in the relevant areas" so certainly it is available at this point in 2024. The article also stated "Ben Levesque, executive vice president of the company, declined to comment in detail on the alleged violations." I would think saying something that is not a generic soundbite assures us that it's a human being that cares rather than a company man. Like many in this industry I find the corporate takeover to be concerned with projecting an image rather than actual care. I suggest all with loved ones look past the facade and hold them to public accountability, I'm sure these companies would rather people forget and not know anything. Needless to say if this ends up being censored it will likely speak volumes about either Yelp and perhaps Cogir as well. Feel free to move it to the question section but this is a serious matter. https://www.marinij.com/2023/06/16/marin-care-home-cited-by-state-over-alleged-rape/?clearUserState=true

I moved my mother there after 4 years of personally caring for her full-time while she struggled with ever-advancing Alzheimer's. Eventually, it became clear she needed more attention and care than I could provide alone -- but the decision to move her out of her own home of 50+ years was very hard. I knew we needed a place that would feel like home to her: peaceful, attractive, calming, and surrounded by warmth. We found that at Three Home Village. The owner Erik's 17+ years managing a large senior-care facility in the area is evident in the organization, thoughtfulness, and kindness that pervade every aspect of operations. My mother's daily caregivers are diligent in meeting her daily needs with love and compassion. She's eating and sleeping well, and always looks peaceful, healthy, and well-groomed whenever I visit unannounced. The place is always very clean and orderly. What's more, I always feel welcome and at home during my visits -- as if I were visiting a relative's own house. I'm so grateful that we found Three Home Village and the amazing people there.

This home was wonderfully run for years before Harry Ban Meines bought the business 2yrs ago. To say that Harry lacks any and all experience, knowledge, skills and compassion is a gross understatement. He is not only completely ill-equipped to care for any elderly persons afflicted with any sort of dementia, but for anyone with spontaneous medical issues. Aside from all that, this man is purely EVIL. I honestly believe he is either a sociopath and/or psychopath; all the characteristics apply. What a huge and costly mistake. My intuition has never been so far off! Helen (primary staff) is wonderful and the ONLY thing allowing this business to float. After having met my father (who has Alzheimer's), Harry agreed to take him in only to have him physically and brutally extracted three days later. Anyone with ANY knowledge of dementia has told me when one becomes agitated and combative out of the blue, the FIRST thing they check for is a UTI. This was the case with my father, but Harry kicked him out with no consideration of any underlying medical cause, no care, concern, compassion, and nowhere to go-- and in a time of utmost need for both my father AND myself. Harry knew my mother just tragically died in a house fire FIVE days before, and now my father was in ICU; I was overwhelmed with grief and had my hands full. Though my father was only there 3 nights and was kicked out for good, he is charging me 3x the number of nights because my father's clothes were there until then. Not only that, but he actually REFUSED to let me pick up items he FAILED to return to me when I was there, including my father's meds! He charged me $100 to ship my dad's walker when all I wanted was for it to be put outside to be picked up. He REFUSED. He FAILED to release my father's meds as well and REFUSED to have them picked up, even left outside. He charged me for picking up a donated hospital bed which my father slept in only 1-2 nights (which he would have picked up anyway). The night he had my father extracted, he never called me until afterwards, knowing I am only 10 minutes away, and after I spent hours finding a nighttime attendant AT HIS INSISTANCE (who showed up for the night but Harry still had my father taken away). His behavior and treatment have been unusually cruel, totally unreasonable; literally astounding. This has been the most cruel and unusual treatment I have ever been met with in my life, let alone by someone who is supposed to be trusted to care for someone who cannot care for themselves. He made every single thing far more painful and unnecessarily difficult, as though out of spite. I was exceedingly cooperative and did everything I could and everything he asked of me, only for him to bamboozle and go back on everything he asked of me. My experience was so horrifying that it is my wish this place be shut down-- God forbid anyone else should be put through the horror and hardship he has caused my father and me. There isn't a doubt in my mind he's only in this for the money; that certainly speaks for itself. It's as though he is the devil himself. If not for Helen, there would be no care at all there. My father and I have suffered extreme trauma and duress because of this experience. I will be filing a huge complaint with the licensing board as well as with APS. Please, PLEASE STAY AWAY from this place. *Feel free to contact me for additional information.

I am something of an expert on assisted living properties. If you have both parents alive into…read moretheir late 80s, you too will become an expert on this industry. My parents were living at a large senior living property on the east coast, and I was doing everything I could to make their lives better - scheduling doctor's appointments, scheduling taxis, flying back on Jet Blue's redeye, etc - but the trend was not my friend; my parents needed me. I had said multiple times that they should come out to California, and one day my father said "Maybe that makes sense." That was a year ago. It was time to do some fast - but thorough - research. The perfect facility would offer assisted living for my father, and memory care for mom. I researched aggressively, visiting Wind Chime of Marin, Aegis of Corte Madera, Aegis of San Rafael, Alma Via of San Rafael, Atria-Tamalpais Creek, Sunrise of Petaluma, and one or two others I'm forgetting. Some I visited a few times. I never called before visiting; I just showed-up. As opinionated as I am, I had difficulty ranking them best to worst. Yeah, one of the facilities made a poor impression, but any property can have a bad day. It's hard to measure what really matters - the care they provide. Actually cost was also hard to measure. Some properties have a non-refundable buy-in payment; others have monthly surcharges that are added as the resident needs more help. (I had been warned about these - a property can get very expensive very quickly.) I was down to two possibilities - Alma Via of San Rafael or Atria-Tamalpais Creek - when someone from hospice mentioned Creekwood Senior Living, in Novato. Dang - I had visited the property just across the street, but not even noticed Creekwood. So I drove back up to Novato, and did my surprise drop-in. Here's what was different: almost all the residents were out in Creekwood's common area when I walked in the door. At all the other properties I visited, it seemed to be just the healthy seniors that I saw in the common areas. So where were the unhealthy ones? There seem to be two possibilities: they were left in their rooms, or they had been asked to move-out, since they were no longer profitable, and/or didn't help the property's image. Remember, the trend is not our friend. You don't want your loved one left in his/her room, or asked to move, as his/her needs increase. And you don't want to go broke, if the property's angle is to add fees for every nuance of care. If you/your loved one is still active, choose one of the properties packed with healthy seniors that you can play tennis with. But if you/your loved one needs care, make sure to visit Creekwood. When you evaluate any property I recommend looking for: * fair, no-surprises pricing * single-level properties (waiting for elevators is a drag) * big, active common areas * plenty of parking (It makes it easier to visit, knowing that you will never have to hunt for parking!) I moved my parents to Creekwood in late November, 2012. I've visited there... jeez - scores of times. I have no regrets; it's the best decision I've made in a long long time. I only wish that I got my parents out here earlier...

Also, both of my parents had been dramatically declining for a couple of months, so we needed to act fast to get them new doctors with weekly appointments and consistent caregiving. Aegis Corte Madera is the right place for them. An excellent UCSF doctor visits the community every Tuesday, and she has improved my parents' medical care. She works closely with the nurses onsite, so there is clear communication and implementation. Both parents made trips to Marin Health (hospital), so it was not an overnight success, but their health has stabilized. I have faith in their medical care, and they are in better shape than when they lived in their home. The management is exceptionally welcoming. They made my parents feel like they belonged right away. The GM buddied up to my dad to make him comfortable. The nurses and caregivers display a lot of care and even affection, which helped my mom adapt. The management staff is deeply invested in each individual and will do whatever it takes to settle people into the community. The cost is high, and the entrance/community fee is too high. However, I could not find another option offering medical support, very comfortable living spaces, a sunny apartment with views of the Marin ridgelines, and lively community activities. When I looked at my spreadsheet, the monthly costs for almost all the facilities were very close. I bit the bullet and paid the higher community fee, and we've had an excellent outcome. I recommend Aegis.
