Flies in the pastry case

Yesterday (07/26/2025), my husband and I stopped by The Village Bakery. It is a very cute little coffee shop with a few pastry.. My husband wanted a scone but I noticed a fly in the case with all the pastries. I kindly told the young lady " Oh there is a fly in the case." She barely tried to shew the fly away and closed the case. Then I noticed several other flies in the case but the young lady didn't seem to care. She stepped away to talk to the barista and left the flies in the case touching each pastry. Therefore, anyone whom went to the bakery on Saturday 07/26/2025, I hope you do not get sick..

This coffee shop is so cute, after the recent burn down of the other amazing bakery, the drop-down windows, local barista owner who is very, VERY generous with the pastries. It was near closing time and like assholes we didn't check, but the owner cleared half her pastry trays and sent us on our way with an Americano and Matcha latte. They had a variety of milk alternatives. Yoga & healing studio right upstairs and a gorgeous restaurant in the connecting structure. Such a beautiful outdoor sitting area. The pastries were such a yummy surprise. Thank you for existing!!!

Cute corner coffee store. The first day I got a chai latte with oat milk and my cousin got a matcha latte, both is really good. I also like to try different pastries in new areas and I came across this gluten free Meyer lemon peppercorn cupcake and it's a good balance of light and sweet. Cupcake is dense but light and the frosting is not overly sweet. And the best part is that it doesn't taste like gluten Our last day in town, we went back and I got the golden latte which is a turmeric latte and my cousin got the chai latte since I really liked mine the other day. It was pretty good. The only thing I was sad about the golden latte comes in a smaller size cup and I of course ordered the peppercorn cupcake again. Definitely would come back here again and would want to try the restaurant in the same building too!

Their pour over is exceptional! You can tell they know their beans and take pride in every cup. If you're a coffee lover, this spot is an absolute mustvisit.

A lovely place to stop when you first arrive in Big Sur to load up on snacks and drinks before heading out on a trail or to the beach.

Coffee Shop x Carajillo

The fam and i were in monterey for the weekend and stumbled upon the village for a quick pit stop and who would have known we would have found this gem. I walked along the outside glass and saw that they had tito's vodka and liquor 43 so i decided to look @ the menu and boom there it was, a carajillo. For those who don't know it's pretty much the mother or father of the espresso martini and been around forever in latin american countries and throughout Spain, which consists of Liquor 43 x Espresso, shaken up generously and served over ice. I forget the girls names but they were so welcoming and had a bright smile from helping us and whoever else came in during the time we were there. The barista whipped up one the best carajillo i've had stateside which is rare because you can't really find them around here since most places don't carry liquor 43. A true treat. 10//10 would recommend. Mind you it was 9:40am Cheers.

The service here was probably the worst I've experienced at a coffee shop in a long time. Which is really sad given how great the reviews are. We arrived In the late morning when there was no line. The 2 girls at the front greeted us and then completely ignored us while they continued their conversation with another guy that was there. I'm assuming he had already ordered his drink because one of the other girls was already working on something. They were letting him sample different things and they just kept talking while we stood there. EVENTUALLY when he was done talking they FINALLY acknowledged us and took our order. We almost considered leaving but we were informed prior to our arrival by another person that Big Sur bakery had burned down which was our original plan. Plus we were dying for a coffee after hitting the road early. We placed our order and the prices were a little high for mediocre coffee that we did not enjoy. I would never return here based on service alone, but the prices and bitter coffee, will definitely guarantee a drive by next time we are in the area.

Mo and I had a last minute change to our wedding weekend itinerary and needed to book a new venue for 18 adults and one child. We reached out to several different restaurants in the Big Sur area but we ended up booking with Cara here at The Village because their general menu offerings align with Mo and my normal taste. We had several pescatarians and a few who are lactose intolerant and The Village was easily able to accommodate all the dietary restrictions. Upon arriving our table was all setup and layed out so nicely with personalized menus from what we had agreed upon with Cara. They even had Mo and my name on them! It was a subtle touch that our guests enjoyed. The food itself was really delicious and everyone was happy at the end of the night. Offerings: Vegetable and Bean soup (Aromatic, tasty, vegetables were perfectly cooked) Little gem salad (Good, fresh, and light) Local Black Cod, confit tomato (Tender, perfectly cooked, light but tasty) Mushrooms & polenta (Creamy but totally dairy free! Mushrooms were delicious and I would definitely eat this again) Service overall was outstanding and even with this being a smaller restaurant our food still came out within an appropriate amount of time and conversation could pass between courses. Thanks to everyone at The Village for accommodating us even though we are a rambunctious group!

I heard a buzz about this new restaurant in the heart of Big Sur, so my husband and I took a drive down the coast to give it a try. The Village vibe is modern, cool and relaxed and there were fresh local flowers on every table. The staff was welcoming and friendly and very knowledgeable about the food and wine. I was very interested to try the nut-based cheese board - I was blown away by the flavors, and the presentation was beautiful! We also ordered a watermelon salad and wild mushroom entree, which again, were incredibly tasty. All the food is thoughtfully sourced and fresh, with unexpected flavor combinations that are astonishing! I really can't wait to go back and taste more.

Breakfast Hash - Beets, potatoes, kale, tomatoes, avacado

The food at the cafe was amazing! My BF was planning to go with a less healthy alternative at the store next door. He had his toast and I had the breakfast beet hash. He even had a little of mine. This was a great meal before our hike a Pfeiffer State Park. Sun Potion tonics, we both had the Adaptogenic Au Lait, it was good - expensive for a coffee but it had extra boosters so reasonable considering that. Also had a delicious Apple Pie Scone that was NOT made out of white refined flour. Very unique 'silver' ware and overall atmosphere. Biggest reason not 5 star, a little bit of 'East Coast' stick (price) shock on our parts. Would go back if we were in the area!

Wonderful people, great pastries, fantastic bread (levain)! Many of these folks previously worked at the Big Sur Bakery before the fire.

It is not easy to find if you are using Google maps. Upon entering the space, I wasn't sure where the front of the studio was. The entryway extends along one side where you place your belongings. I had to be guided to the mats and tools. The large space has uneven floors that might be radiant heated. There is a loose check in process wherein you sign a piece of paper. Although we had registered online, no one ever asked us if we had done so, nor did they confirm our attendance by checking. The first class we attended was taught by a substitute. We set up against the wall for this Therapeutic Hatha practice. The sequence was fine, the teacher was nice and she used the props in creative ways. I modified as I needed to and felt the overall experience was good. The second class was with a male teacher. It was titled as "Hatha Yoga," but it felt much more like an ashtanga style class in regard to the posturing and cues. The teacher got our attention at the beginning by saying something like, "We're three minutes past start time, get settled so we can begin at a reasonable time." There were no introductions or any establishment of connection. He did not greet us as we arrived, check in, nor provide guidance for setting up. He directed us into the first posture, poorly explaining how to use the tools to set it up. As experienced practitioners, at first we felt like the practice had a good vinyasa krama. Then, we all agreed, it's like someone grabbed the wheel and turned it completely off course. The cueing was unclear (he would say "inhale your right leg," and provide no other guidance). The asana sequence did not feel good. The teacher didn't appear to have an awareness of the bodes or needs of those attending the class. Following the closing of the class, the group all said, "Thank you David," at which point we learned his name. While I may return to this studio, I will defintely be doing so with discernment after my experience. I visit Carmel often and have a friend there who is searching for a studio. She has decided this is not the one for her. However, as I said, the teachers and studio have potential to create a truly special place to practice in Carmel (plus you can get donuts and/or cheese afterward).

It was 10am and there I was with 3 other people and no instructor. The class was canceled. I wasted my last morning in Carmel and was not going to wait 90 minutes for my brunch reservation which cost me $32. This is very unprofessional, disappointing and a waste of my time.

Their class selection felt intentional, and for a $37 drop-in, the value was definitely there. I took a 90-minute Bikram class where we move through the full sequence twice. It felt less about perfection and more about understanding the poses and transitions. Coming from my usual studio, the teaching style felt more formal. We were encouraged not to take water breaks out of respect for others' practice, which was challenging in the 108° heat but also pushed me to stay present and disciplined. The instructor was knowledgeable, calm, and easy to follow, guiding transitions clearly throughout. The space was clean and spacious, with dressing rooms, bathrooms, and secure cubbies. I also appreciated that they lock the doors during class. Nice touch that they provided a yoga towel for my mat plus two additional towels after check-in. Overall, a grounding experience that deepened my appreciation for the practice.

The studio is clean but to me that's not enough. There should be energy and spirit and togetherness and in my opinion, the energy here detracts from the physical benefit of the practice.

The website notes to email them before showing up. It's likely because it is a small business and they just want to know your level of yoga before you get there. You arrive, sign in, and pay cash or Zelle. I love ashtanga not only because you get these amazing adjustments, but the flow of the class just transforms your body and mind, I don't have to think about anything. The instructor is well indeed trained certainly by the gurus. It was definitely a challenge for me having not done a traditional class in a long time. The studio was warm, and I definitely was quite sweaty in this class. It is not an overly heated class, but the practice itself warmed my body up. Every adjustment that I received allowed me to remember the shape and learn how it should really feel, and really how capable I am. They all just felt so good. I felt a little dehydrated before I got to class so I brought my water bottle in but traditionally you would not. I actually didn't take any sips during class-- I usually don't during any yoga class. They do offer props in class which I think is also unique for a ashtanga. Everyone has her limitations. Ashtanga is the yoga style where I feel like I need two blocks (for lift ups).
