Our table in the Bistrot was ready spot on 9.00pm despite it being a very busy Saturday evening. We did reject the first table on offer as it was right by the front entrance with lots of passing traffic. The table we were finally settled on was away from the main restaurant in a pokey corner - it seemed the locals/regulars had pre booked the best seats in the house. (Clearly they all read Michael Winner in the Times on a Sunday and follow his lead of selecting tables.....) Onto the food - quite a small menu and a bit dissapointing for vegetarians - if you are vegan don't even bother. I was tempted by the Baked Camembert which we all shared as a starter - make sure you order extra bread, the portion that comes with the cheese is no where near enough. Mains were Duck - devoured and thumbs up, Crayfish Risotto - another empty plate, Beouf Bourguignon - a huge thumbs down, very fatty - Goats Cheese Salad for the veggie - as nice as a Goats Cheese salad can be. Overall we had a pleasant evening out, good wine, good company, pleasant ambience - despite the corner setting of our table. I would say give it a go, just avoid the Beef.

Similarly it disappoints me when a vegetarian restaurant lacks inspiring dishes instead churning out the same old vegetarian fare on a cheese heavy menu. I don't have a problem with cheese it is delicious but variety and a break-from-the-norm is what I look for in a restaurant and this doesn't hit the spot. If you are after a basic menu, mostly fried then this will do, which I suppose in the winter months this is a welcomed. This is a lovely place, somewhere cosy to warm your cockles after a long walk in the Chevin although there isn't a bar so no whisky to keep chills at bay.

Situated near the Chevin in some beautiful countryside, the Cheerful Chilli is a relaxed and cosy place. The food isn't gourmet but the quality definitely doesn't suffer for that. Rather, it seems as if they've decided to do fairly simple meals and do them really well. The atmosphere is casual and friendly, a bit like walking into a huge old stone-flagged kitchen, brightened up by lovely flowers on all the tables. It's the best of casual dining: unpretentious but attractive, service relaxed but not slow, and staff in T-shirts with friendly smiles and good knowledge of the food. Oh yes, the food. Hoo boy. I'm still so full it's actually hard to think about it. Since we were in a group of six, we decided to go for the 'Banquet' - a selection of starters, mains and desserts from the menu. It was £18.50 and wow... it was definitely value for money. We had a 'pre-starter' meze of two giant plates of couscous, halloumi, falafel, houmous, bread, olives and salad, which really could have been a generous starter on its own. But oh no, there were starters too: potato wedges with cheese, corn cakes with sweet chilli, nachos, and goat's cheese tart. All delicious. To be honest, at this point we could have left satisfied - it felt like we'd had a full meal already! But then the mains arrived: vegetable fajitas, kerala curry, enchiladas, roasted veg and pizza. Again everything was delicious - possibly the only weak point was the pizza which I think was homemade but had been a bit overdone which left it tasting a little like an oven pizza. But everything else was great. Nothing fancy: it was all stuff I could make at home, but just.... better. Hugely flavoursome in a way I can never quite get my dishes to be, and presented beautifully. So on to the desserts! We got wedges of the chocolate truffle cake (rich and divine), the cheesecake (maybe a little creamy for my taste but lovely fruit) and the chocolate nemesis (dark, fudgy, amazing). And what was maybe even better: a huge bowl of vanilla ice cream which was hands down the best ice cream I've ever had. I asked them where they got it and they said they make it themselves. I wonder if they'd consider delivering in bulk...? I couldn't quite believe that we were only paying £18.50 for a lovely meal that could keep you full for days, but yes, it was true. You can bring your own booze too, and they didn't charge corkage - champion! The reasonable-ness just continued with my friend being charged just 70p for the 7-up she ordered: smallest restaurant markup ever? And so we rolled home, vowing to return. I'm already planning a walk up to Otley for this very purpose - I can't think of a better place to welcome tired and hungry walkers!

In the affluent town of Ilkley, a place like this is not out of place - inside the beautiful old building is a simple but elegant decor and some highly professional and attentive service in a husband-wife run business. The food itself is imaginative without being ridiculous - think classic European with contemporary twists - think venison, veal, pigeon etc. If you prefer your traditional meats like me, they do a gorgeous cut of beef, which I had on my visit. Though the food was delightful, the prices were probably a little bit off - i.e. you pay slightly more than you should despite the quality of food. Luckily, when I went, my parents footed the bill but we all left feeling that it was slightly too expensive all round, meaning that it's probably best to go on rare special occasions.

The interior is lowly-lit and intimate with an understated modern design which gives the place a hushed atmosphere without detracting from its social qualities. I visited on a weekday evening for food (they serve until 10PM) rather than booze, but I was impressed by the eclectic range of beers I noticed (Black Sheep, Peroni, Staropramen etc). Even more impressive was the food I was served (rump steak with peppercorn) - it was uncomplicated, like the rest of the pub, but it was downright delicious. In short, it felt cooked, rather than microwaved, something you don't always find in pubs nowadays. They offer the pub classics you'd expect, but also more classier, expensive options, meaning that the Fox succeeds in being both a pub and a restaurant at the same time. And the beer garden is great.

The ducks wear wellies here you know, good job with the rain we get. As a stop off, and a regular one too, it's the turn of the Fox. This is a great pub. Simple as that. It's an impressive stone building and equally beautiful inside. With the feel of a big roaming farm house or even small stately home (at a push), it's got a big fire and lots of wood. I'm a fan of lots of wood, it screams importance to me. Maybe I've watched Anchorman too many times though. You'll also get real ales, just the way you like them. You'll also get some excellent wines too and it's a real all rounder. As for the food, excellent. This is better than your usual pub affair. We're talking high end, good quality meats, fish and vegetarian dishes. It's not cheap but it's a class act and worth the extra. If you're looking to impress, the Fox will deliver.

The restaurant had a relaxed ambience and was ver busy. The staff were very welcoming and our 2 friends were already having a cocktail called woo woo, which they proclaimed were delicious but expensive at £5.40. I tried a bit of theirs and was yummy. The guy, who I assume was the manager asked us if we wanted to stay sitting and he'd get us a drink or go straight to our table. We opted straight to the table as we were starving. At our table, I did notice they were very packed together so they'd certainly tried to put as many tables in as possible but when I sat down, I was still able to breathe!!! A waitress came and took our orders after our drinks arrived. She was friendly and smiley, dressed in an outfit that I assume is Greek(?) 2 of us had calamari, I had sea bass feta flat for main, chicken soulvaka and 2 opted for a sharing vegetarian starter and the Agora Vegetarian Meze a main, also to share. We didn't have to wait long for our food, both starters and main. Plus we all agreed it was delicious. My main came with rice and a cold salad which I wasn't sure to start with but I didn't dwell and it went down a treat. I could've eaten a dessert but was disappointed with the choice. To be fair, the waitress said it out to us and as the place was busy all I heard was cheesecake and chocolate fudge cake. From that point I wasn't interested as I'm not keen on either. My mates ordered a cheesecake to share and they said it was one of the nicest cheesecakes they'd had. I thought prices for the food were reasonable as it was delicious.
