I have loved living here. I have lived here for 3 years. The front desk and maintenance folks are fantastic and so is the property manager.

I moved into the Union Residences in June, 2025. All I can say is WOW! This is by far one of the best places I have lived and it's been a great 4 months. The moment I inquired about availability, Chelsea the property manager was there to answer all of my 500 emails (sorry Chelsea!) and she found my the perfect unit, terrace and all. Dee the resident manager is my dog's favorite person in the building and is always around to help out, with a dog treat in hand. The front desk personnel are amazing too (kudos to Chip!), always a hello or good morning when you get off the elevator and when you return to the building it's always a "welcome home". They are so accommodating and always willing to help or answer a question. The building itself is immaculate, the gym is divided into separate sections for cardio, weights, machines, yoga and extremely clean. The free cup of coffee is a nice perk too! My fellow residents whether human or canine are extremely friendly too :) I couldn't be happier! read more

I've been living at The Union for 3 years now and have no intention of moving any time soon. The location is great and walkable to both downtown and East Rock. The appliances are all great and I haven't had any issues at all with my unit. The gym and shared areas are very nice as well and the concierges are all very friendly and helpful. I lived in the Union for 2 years in 2 different apartments. The 1st year, the air conditioning did not work for the entire summer and when it was finally fixed, and in both apartments, the system was so noisy as to be unusable. For both apartments, the hot water was not "on demand" and sometimes it would take 45 minutes to heat up. Initially told that it was because a lot of apartments on that line were empty during the summer and so the hot water did not reach the 11th floor and then the 8th floor. By the time I left, there was an acknowledgement that it was a structural issue that was not going to be repaired. Hot and cold water lines were backwards for the washer/dryer in the first apartment and we ruined clothes until we realized that there was a problem. In the second apartment, the washer was full of mold that was difficult to remove. Dishwasher panel in first apartment was finicky and the machine had to be replaced. In both apartments, walls and windows were sooo paper thin that we could hear word for word conversations. And, the windows were virtually impossible to open. Both apartments faced Elm and Church---probably the noisiest streets in New Haven. Constant bus noises, screaming, drag racing throughout the night, events where the dB levels significantly exceeded healthy limits, afterparties with cars blasting music until the wee hours of the morning. Apartment appointments were poor quality; in the second apartment, the cabinets were made of peeling vinyl, the shades, also vinyl, sagged and looked cheap and unkempt; food in freezer always had freezer burn. The second apartment also had warped floors. The second year, we also had regular elevator outages with one elevator at a time out of service for weeks; no WIFI in the gym for the last 6 months of our lease. Outlets oftentimes did not work and had to be repaired or replaced. Renter beware. read more

Truly fantastic building--I couldn't be happier about my choice to live here. Amenities (huge outdoor patio with grills and lots of comfortable furniture, 4 whole rooms worth of gym, free coffee, media lounge, co-working space, music practice room communal 11th-floor balconies, etc.) are excellent. The apartments themselves are the nicest I've seen in New Haven--high ceilings, huge windows with stunning views (even on the lower floors, since the building is across from the Town Green) and lots of natural light, good-quality hardwood floors, spacious granite countertops, in-unit Bosch washer and dryer, stainless steel GE range/dishwasher/fridge/microwave, generally good construction (e.g., doors are heavy and solid, insulation is good enough I haven't needed to turn on heat on days in the low 30s and even high 20s), and thoughtful details (e.g., outlets aplenty, some of which can be controlled by wall switches). The staff could not be more courteous, helpful, professional, and genuinely kind. Having 24-hour doorman/concierge service is a huge plus--both for security and for convenience. The doormen take security very seriously, can take care of your dry cleaning, and can arrange (and sometimes get you discounts on) personal training and apartment cleaning services. Packages can also be picked up at any time from the front desk (which is not the case in other apartment buildings I've lived in). There's also a live-in resident manager and a full-time handyman on staff, who both do a fantastic job of keeping the building running like a well-oiled machine. The building itself is an historic landmark, and the location is unbeatable--at the heart of downtown, seconds away from Yale, and still not far from East Rock. Compared to its competition, the Union really does strike me as the most desirable apartment building in New Haven, all things considered: Winchester Lofts and the Corsair are both a very long way from downtown, and friends who live in the former have complained that apartment interiors there are poorly constructed. The latter is right next to an expressway, and I've heard complaints that its atmosphere can feel a bit *too* communal or dorm-like. The Taft can get noisy, as a lot of undergrads live there, and it's across the street from Elm City Social's rooftop bar, which gets loud on spring, summer, and fall evenings. The interiors are also somewhat dingy. 360 State probably has the nicest amenities of any building in town (it has all the Union does, plus an outdoor pool, an indoor parking garage, and a nice-but-wildly-overpriced grocery store on its ground level), but the location is worse (right along the train tracks, more removed from the heart of downtown, longer walk from Yale, etc.), the building itself is rather ugly (if that's the sort of thing that matters to you), and it's considerably more expensive. The Novella is nice, too, but its location is also not as central as the Union's, and while its rooftop has solid views, many of its apartments do not. The building's aesthetic is decidedly trendy, for better or for worse. The Eli (on the same block as the Union) shares many of The Union's upsides--attractive and historical architecture, great location, good views (though not quite as good as The Union's, as many of the Eli's units look out at other high rise buildings, rather than directly over the green). However, its interior spaces are not nearly as modernized as the Union's, and from what I gather, it is not as well-staffed either. read more

I've lived here for about 8 months and cannot say enough good things. The entire building staff is incredibly friendly, helpful, and responsive. The concierges and front door staff especially go above and beyond. One thing that stands out, for example -- I travel for work occasionally, and when I get home from a trip, they will stack my packages on the bell hop cart when I walk in so I can come back down and grab them quickly after dropping my suitcase in my apartment. I never asked them to do that or anything like it -- the afternoon/evening concierge just started doing it when I'd come back from a trip, and I appreciate it very much. The apartment itself is fantastic, newly finished, and spacious, with tons of natural light (I live on the Elm St. side of the building). I've had only very minor maintenance issues, and the staff is always super responsive if something needs to be looked at or fixed. They're extremely on top of everything, and they work really hard to keep the building in excellent shape. The building amenities are great -- the patio is nice and has a couple grills that I use often in the summer, and the gym and weight room have a ton of equipment. They're pretty empty, too -- maybe people are using them at different times -- so it often feels like a private gym. The building is also extremely quiet. The walls are thick, and I never noise coming from my neighbors. I'm a light sleeper and building noise was a priority for me when I was looking at apartments, so I've been really happy about that. The building is mostly professionals with some graduate students, and everyone has been a really respectful neighbor. I had lived in New Haven for 3 years as a law student before moving back and coming to The Union, so I had seen inside a ton of buildings that friends lived in during law school and that I looked at during my apartment search when I moved back. The Union was far and away the nicest, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking to move. read more

I have lived in the Union for about a year and a half and have absolutely loved it. The staff are amazing and incredibly responsive to any need. The apartments themselves are very modern and since everything was so recently remodeled, everything is in great condition. I live in a studio and unlike many studio apartments in the area, this one has wonderfully large windows that flood the room with light. It also has a shower that is to die for (rain shower head!) and the bathroom itself is surprisingly spacious given that it is a studio. The amenities are also top notch with a fantastic outdoor patio with grill access, a fantastic gym and a penthouse lounge with workspace and tv area. We simply love living at The Union In New Haven. Our unit has character and warmth with awesome outdoor space, lovely finishes and a great layout. But what really makes The Union special is the staff. The service and care here is unparalleled. We've lived in 5 apartment buildings in recent years and none have come close to the experience here. From the Concierge team to the Resident Manager, Maintenance Team and the Leasing team - we are made to feel special each and every day! I can not recommend The Union highly enough . We have loved living here the past two years! It is a well kept building with all the amenities but still maintains a historic feel! Dee always makes sure our maintenance requests are taken care of ASAP and Chelsea and Grady are consistently supportive and upbeat in the property management office. Chip and Mike at the front door always have a smile and we really appreciate that! The neighborhood is a good blend of proximity to downtown and also near the quieter East Rock neighborhood. The gym is especially amazing with separate rooms for each type of equipment. If you have a car, we have found the most secure parking option to be the 65 Grove street lot. read more

We moved to New Haven from the West Coast a bit over a year ago and found The Union. Our apartment overlooks New Haven's beautiful Green, and we enjoy sunsets every day the sun shines. We can walk everywhere with ease which is one reason we chose a building downtown.The building is fantastic and the doormen are a wonderful and professional feature. There is maintenance on duty 24 hours a day, so whenever we've had an issue, it's been addressed immediately. read more

I have lived at The Union for several months. ********** **Pros ********** . The staff is _incredibly_ warm, effective, and helpful. The staff in the front desk, the building manager (Charles Healy), and the staff in the office are all excellent. . The staff building is well-maintained. In particular, the building manager is excellent at fixing problems within an apartment. . The location and views are excellent. . The gym, while small, is good. ********** **Cons ********** . The website is misleading. The website shows a beautiful outdoor lounge. But none exists...and the person who worked at The Union who sold us the unit promised that the lounge would be finished by the end of the year...but that is not happening. . One or both of the elevators was broken for each of the past 7 weeks. . The rent is expensive...but you would know that if you were thinking about moving in there. ********** **Update ********** . The management gave me a $200 refund as an apology for broken elevator. Moving the ranking up to four stars. Thanks The Union! read more

At the Union for over two years & it has been false advertising since the beginning. I signed my original lease from out of state based on the amenities shown on the website. Both the leasing agent & the website failed to disclose these amenities did not exist, but were under construction. At one point, I was reimbursed some funds for the lack of a gym. After repeated inquiries, the management has failed to address the other issues. As a student, a workspace was important - The Guild. It is advertised as a shared workspace with a coffee bar. There is no coffee bar in the space. And, they failed to note the space is connected to an music practice room that is not soundproofed & a tv room not even separated by a door. I recently commented to the leasing manager about the lack of a coffee bar, she said it did exist on the 2nd fl - an unprofessional response. There is a Keurig on the 2nd fl - 9 floors & two separate elevators below. The outdoor space was not available until 5/2017 - I signed my lease in 8/2015. Unprofessional response- it was ready for spring. read more
