We stayed at the Battlesteads Hotel in August 2011 while walking Hadrian's Wall. Prior to the start…read moreof our walk, we were informed that when we reached Chesters Roman Fort and Museum, we should call the Battlesteads, and someone would pick us up and drive us to the hotel. However, when we called we were told it would be at least an hour before someone could come by, a bit off-putting considering we had been walking for several hours and simply wanted to shower and relax. We ended up hitching a ride with a tour group who was also staying at the hotel (we met their very kind bus driver at the tea room at Chesters), and were shown to a very small room that overlooked someone else's front yard. The room itself was comfortable, but so small there was no where to put our luggage. We simply had to step over our suitcases to move to either side of the bed. The bathroom was a bit of a surprise because it had a more modern look, complete with gray, rubbery floors. It certainly did the job, but the accommodations were not posh by any means (and I was not expecting luxury). After our showers, we had a few drinks in the garden before meeting a friend for dinner in the pub. The garden was lovely - the flowers were still very much in bloom, and a wooden fence around the property provided privacy from neighbors. It's my understanding that the pub uses fruits and vegetables grown in the garden. Dinner, on the other hand, was not what I expected from an award-winning pub (my partner informed me that the Battlesteads was "Pub of the Year" in 2010). The hake and chips was rather bland and the mushy peas did not boost the flavour profile. It seemed to me that Battlesteads was trying too hard to appear cosmopolitan, rather than focusing on good food and flavour. I appreciate locally sourced food, but it has to taste good as well.

This place is lovely- my mother and I stayed last summer for just one night, and I wish it could…read morehave been longer. We had a nice twin room- slightly dated but very clean and comfortable, I suppose you'd call it quaint. The bar areas were very comfortable, but it's the food that really got me. I surprisingly had the nicest fajitas I've tasted! They also had a great selection of local cheeses. The waitstaff are all very knowledgable about the food and wine, and were more than happy to advise. We really enjoyed our stay, hopefully we'll be able to come again.

I had planned a long weekend away so had booked this in the expectation of a pleasant weekend away…read more On arrival at the hotel our initial impression was good, the outside appearance of the hotel with its castellations seemed to make its mark, the receptionist who greeted us was friendly professional. Our room initially seemed OK however on closer inspection we had to ask the staff to change the hospitality tray as it hadn't been cleaned properly in days (it wasn't just remnants of detritus from the previous guest). The Bathroom was in great need of a thorough clean and update (again I had to ask in the morning that the bathroom be cleaned including the black mould that must have been there for weeks). I had assumed Digital TV had reached Otterburn however unfortunaltley our TV only got 4 channels so had to suffer CBBC's or T4 in the morning (never thought I would have missed Andrew Marr in a morning till then) not that I go away to watch TV but sometimes its nice to catch up with events in a morning. We ate twice here once in the Stables bar and the next night in the Hotel Restaurant both times we enjoyed the food and the service was excellent. Breakfast was fine, however it would have been better had one member of staff notice and removed the rotting apple (yes I did say rotting) from the fruit selection on the breakfast bar. After my partner removed it and left it on the side it still remained there throughout the rest of the morning. I would say that on the whole the hotel is understaffed and although all the staff who were there are pleasant and helpful, the maintenance and standards of hygiene are well below expectations. No I will not be returning here !!!
