Here's the short version: if you expect more from a gym, regardless of your level, join Skill of…read moreStrength (SOS) right now. The Details: Several years ago I switched from traditional conditioning (machines, rote freeweight exercises) to functional training. If I only knew sooner... The trainer who originally taught me and my kids moved out of reach. Since then I've engaged in a pretty arduous search and ended up at SOS. As far as I can tell, it's one of a handful of gyms of its kind in the Boston area, and it happens to be at 73 Princeton St., North Chelmsford MA 01863 (https://www.skillofstrength.com). SOS does a terrific job of translating cutting edge methods to well structured and original routines that can be followed by all levels of ability. On one hand there's a somewhat more casual crowd that does a modified version of the day's program (I'm in their MOVE class) and they seem quite content. I'm absolutely, 100% all for that. At the same time, there's another crowd that's always pushing for the next level. Despite the wide ranging audience, SOS underscores the experience with some very subtle social norms - very healthy, and it creates a great vibe. My first experience with SOS was sending my high school aged son through their COMPETE program. It accomplished everything I was hoping for - measurable gains in quickness, strength, cardio, reinforcement of footwork, increased confidence, and familiarization with a vocabulary that athletes require if they're going to progress. All in a personal, incredibly positive environment. Why SOS works for me: starting in my teens and stretching into my late 30's I spent a good portion of time working with skill coaches and strength & conditioning coaches. Together, they made a huge difference in my progress. I don't play a sport anymore, but I still want a technical workout oriented toward increased fitness. SOS delivers in spades. I'm a bug for technique - I actually believe that 5 pounds done right is better than 50 pounds done wrong. As a result I'm constantly asking questions, getting terrific guidance, and no one's lost patience or interest - instead, they seem to be totally into it. SOS has also taught me additional, helpful routines for balance (which are actually fun, and this stuff is supposed be fun), and I'm still pulling myself together on their footwork drills - happily. If you have kids or student athletes who would benefit from a thoughtful, engaging workout, or if you're looking for something different and well structured, or if you simply burn for a good workout, SOS is a terrific place.

The group classes are super- the trainer/owner Bobby keeps things moving and does a super job combining strength with overall conditioning. He listened to my goals and was able to tweak things. I had NO clue what I was doing, but that wasn't a problem. We started on the basics and form/safety. The other people in the classes are awesome, and range from newbies to really experienced athletes. It's a really fun environment where everyone motivates each other. After a couple months of the classes, I'm now trying individual training that has a martial arts focus. Bobby definitely did his research on my sport and caters the workouts 100% towards better performance. The prices may be a little higher than the big chain fitness centers, but you are paying for extremely high quality training and guidance. Totally worth it!!

Shortly after moving to the area I walked into the SBC and was greeted by the owner Bobby. Before discussing prices or anything of the such he gave me a walking tour of the facilities and asked me questions about myself and what I hope to achieve. His interest in his clients and members is genuine. He also does personal training sessions and you can tell from the man's physique he knows what he's talking about. So listen up. The facilities are perfect for improving yourself in anyway you see fit. Here you will NEVER have to wait for a squat rack haha. The gym's equipment definitely caters to the strongman/powerlifting/Olympic lifting crowd but it's not at all intimidating. Bobby has instilled a culture of family and respect. It's a very close community that you will be accepted into almost immediately. Even if I don't know the person someone is always ready and willing to give me a spot or give me some advice. There is also an on site Physical Therapist/Trainer named Brett. After dislocating my shoulder I wanted to get back into lifting heavy so I had a consultation with Brett. He set me down and went over my medical history, went through an examination of range of motion and strength. Then he proceeded to show me exercises to ease back into the lifting world and make sure I don't risk reinjury. It's been a year since the injury and so far so good. Brett also does training seminars and has a YouTube channel you should subscribe to. Also occasionally Bobby/Brett will bring in there dogs. Deadlifts & dogs? Can you ask for anything better? There is no other gym I would rather train at than SBC. It simply has the best equipment, community and personnel.

Plenty of cardio and weights equipment, all functioning well, with plenty of duplication so you're not waiting for a machine, and a clean facility with music at the right level. The "extras" like towel service, soap and shampoo, and things like pools and saunas aren't included, but it's a "value" gym, and for my $30 monthly fee, I feel like I'm getting a great value. As for ending the membership, they are up front on sign-up that there's a two-year commitment or you pay an additional fee, so I wouldn't expect that to be waived. Finally, a shout-out to Kim at the front desk on weekday mornings, who greets each member by name and exudes positive energy to start the day. She always finds ways to spruce up the club between check-ins and is a great ambassador.

I looked at my photos…read morefrom my son's wedding and was embarassed by my size 14 MOG dress that had to be let out to fit properly. Try as I might before the wedding I could not lose even a few pounds to make that dress fit. I was desperate. Never able to diet properly or feel comfortable in a "big gym" ($9.99 a month) A friend mentioned she was joining a new gym and asked me to go along with her. From the moment I stepped into GISFW I knew the program would help me. I have been a member of this gym for nearly 3 years! Have lost 30 pounds and have kept it off. I feel stronger and more confident. I have met women of all ages (16 - 75) and body types (very heavy - marathoners) There is a place for everyone because the trainers get to know you on a personal level. Read on if you want to know what Get In Shape for Women is really like. I have been going to this gym at least 3 times a week for the past 3 years and have trained with the owner as well as many different trainers, all closely supervised by the owner. Each time I train, if I give it my all, I leave sweaty, a bit sore but full of energy and confidence. This is not a typical gym. The owner, Terri, has dedicated her life to fitness and nutrition. She inspires, motivates, encourages and yes, harasses her clients. That is what many of us need. If you want to be coddled go into therapy. If you want good health and strength you need someone like Terri who will teach, push, and monitor you. The program is perfect for the busy woman who feels like she does not have time for a workout. If you can spare just an hour a day you can fit this program in to your schedule. I go on my way home from work, perfect for me. The gym works because of accountability. You have an appointment with a trainer. These are firm commitments. I would never skip my hairdresser or dental appointment without calling to cancel. The GISFW gym expects the same courtesy and commitment. I feel very guilty every time I have to call and cancel or reschedule. The trainer on the phone always tries to get me to reschedule instead of letting me skip a workout. This is good for me, it means I am committed and my workout is important. My typical workout is 30 minutes of intense weight training then 30 minutes of cardio with interval training. Both have been very effective for me. I may train with up to 3 other women but there have been times when I get the trainer all to myself. Imagine a personal trainer every time you work out! Even if you are sharing the trainer with 2 or 3 other women, you feel the personal attention. GISFW trainers watch clients closely and help them with good form, proper posture and adequate weight. They always challenge me but do not let me slack off. Women working out are just like children, we will look for opportunities to take short cuts. This will not happen at GISFW and that is why many, many women renew their memberships and continue to train there. After my second year at GISFW I thought I could save money and go to the "big gym" and train myself. I knew all the exercises to do and felt confident GISFW had given me the knowledge to train myself. I was so wrong. The first month I used the elliptical each visit but then was so intimidated to cross over into the weight training area. I did not see many women in that part of the gym. I sought out personal training at the "big gym " and learned that sessions with a trainer there were just as expensive as GISFW. So now I am back at GISFW and plan to keep going indefinitely. I can make it work in my budget because I value my health. It is a very expensive investment and not your typical gym. The cost also motivates me to keep going. It was easy to skip days at the $9.99 a month gym. It was also easy to be anonymous at that gym. I like feeling like a valued member who is greeted by name each visit. I need someone to follow my progress and give me nutritional tips. I value the workouts that Terri and her trainers are constantly researching and changing to keep me motivated. At my daughter's wedding my size 10 dress fit perfectly and I felt great. I am so grateful to GISFW for showing me that I can be fit and healthy if I work for it. Have a Healthy Day!
