Used to be a good place for a meal but recently the food hasn't been as good. Still good for a drink. Has a nice garden with a river.

The Compasses, Sole Street, Crundale…read more The first thing is to find this remote Kentish pub - because it's well worth finding - especially now that the food it so very good! Here (http://www.thecompassescrundale.co.uk/map.htm ) you will find a map and directions from Canterbury, Ashford and Chartham. If you have a satnav the Postcode is CT4 7ES. Now then, down to the important stuff. If you have never been there or if your last visit was more than 18 months ago (today's date is September 2014) you are in for a real treat. Robert (chef) and Donna (joint tenant) have changed this lovely old pub into a lovely old pub serving VERY fine food in goodly portions! The menu is constantly tweaked but this was the menu when Judi and I visited for lunch bringing our friend Philip and our miniature schnauzer, Bertie (i.e. they're dog-friendly!) Starters: Soup of the day = sweetcorn chowder with Wye Bakery sourdough Sweet pickled herrings with Dijon mustard and Bavarian sourdough Chorizo, Cheddar and tomato gratin Potted smoked mackerel with fennel and apple slaw Crispy rabbit with apple and onion sauce and bacon bits Whipped Stilton tart with walnut crumble Suckling pig with garlic butter beans Mains: Pan fried potato, caramelised onion and leek terrine (veg) Roast cod with beer, bacon, roast onions, mash and greens Lemon sole with herb dumplings roast beetroot and horseradish Corn fed duck breast with mash, greens and wild brambles Free range chicken with braised potato, baby gem and peas Roast rump of lamb with gratin potatoes and damson relish Puddings: Stick toffee pudding with caramelised banana and rum and raisin ice cream Chocolate mousse brownie with cherries Passion fruit crème brûlée Vanilla and raspberry cheesecake There was also a 'snack/light lunch menu for those with a smaller appetite at lunchtime including such delights as treacle-cured bacon, fried duck egg and dripping chips; pulled pork bap with fennel and apple slaw and dripping chips. Cost for two courses each for the three of us plus two bottles of pretty good wine , just over £100. Portions were such that a pudding was beyond us on this occasion so next time we'll try a main and a pudding. The important point is that they do NOT serve bog-standard food and we all enjoyed every morsel. Even Bertie was treated to a couple of low-fat snacks! Parking is ample and there is a large lawned beer-garden with children's play facilities at the rear and a fenced-off terrace at the front. This is a Shepherd Neame house with their usual offerings of good Kentish ales and a large selection of very drinkable wines. This is NOT a restaurant: bar stools await those who enjoy a drink and tables are not just for diners; this is a real pub that simply tempts you to eat!

Myself and my family (9 of us) had dinner here last saturday. The food was lovely served quickly…read morewell priced, by really good staff I couldnt fault anything!! would recommend 100% a great evening.
