I am extremely unhappy with The Common Grounds Festival in Lansing. I will never purchase tickets…read morefor this again. I purchased my tickets for the Megan Trainor concert back in April. I got an email that the concert was cancelled the day of the concert. I was informed they would provide refunds for the tickets. The only problem is the hotel reservation I made was non-refundable. I submitted a request for a refund. I was originally told I would get my refund today. When I noticed that I didn't get my refund today, I called them. They informed me that it could take up to six weeks to get my refund. I spoke to a manager for the festival, she expedited my refund but they charged me a $18.00 fee for the refund. Are you all kidding me? That is just extremely bad business. Wow.

This is the 10th year of Common Ground, and while I can't say it has changed much in 10 years, it…read moreis consistently good! They have a mostly volunteer staff, so the service & organization of the thing is always sketchy, but I guess a low staff budget allows them to get better bands. They always have a good selection, heavy on Rock & Country normally, with a sprinkling of "county fair" acts like Eddie Money, etc. I saw Stone Temple Pilots last night & they rocked out! While this may not be the pinnacle of music festivals, it is great for a city the size of Lansing. Keep rockin Common Ground!

Really not a bad place, considering movies are $4-5 and they stay completely up to date with new…read morefeatures. The staff are all very friendly, despite how busy it might get. I remember coming here all growing up and it was "the place to be" on a Friday night. Also the place where I think I saw Titanic over 5 times. The only few downsides that keep it from a stellar 5-star rating is that the seats are REALLY small. Not only for how wide they are, but the rows are all extremely close together and it virtually gives you no leg or even knee room. Also when it's on the busier side, the line inside for food gets wrapped around and begins to blend with the ticket line, making it confusing and slightly annoying. But then, hey, your entire family can go to the movies for $5 each. And did I mention the popcorn is downright amazing?!

An interesting hole-in-the-wall oddity/paranormal/antique mortuary science museum. It's small, but…read moredon't let that deter you--the owner leads tours for $5 that are chalk-full of stories about many of the items in the highly curated collection. The tour I was on lasted for about an hour and went in-depth into the history of the cooling/embalming table, embalming process, voodoo exhibit, and several of the paranormal dolls housed within the museum, ending with the choice to peer into a haunted--some may even describe as "cursed"--mirror fragment. If you appreciate the odd, paranormal, macabre, or gothic, this place is definitely worth a visit! It's located inside an indoor market past a record store. I wish I could've nabbed a t-shirt or pin, but didn't see anything for sale in the store (could have missed them, though).

Michigan Pride is one of the larger Pride events in Michigan. It's about the same distance from Lansing to Grand Rapids/Detroit/Flint/Kalamazoo/etc. so there is a congruence of the different gay communities at this one event. The actual Pride Celebration is always on a Sunday down by the Capital and it definitely has a political tone. The march is a parade that occurs in downtown Lansing after the political rally at the Capital building. The night before is the White Party which involves the local gay bars and is a night of drinking and dancing. I think that the Michigan Pride celebration is fun, but I rarely want to attend. First, the celebration definitely has a more political feel and objective. Part of this has to do with it being held near the capital. I believe in a lot of the political stances but I believe Pride is less about politics and more about getting together and being accepted for who you are. I rarely want to attend because it's in Lansing and it's kind of far away. Overally, the events are well organized and fun.
