When looking for a locally-made breakfast, the Bread Box popped up on my radar (re. Google)…read more Conveniently located near the 330, I figured it would be our best option before heading up to Twillingate for the day. The breakfast and lunch options are prominently displayed on the menu by the counter, but the top item drew both my attention and hunger - the touton breakfast sandwich. Coming with the standard egg, bacon and cheese in a split touton. There's a "mega" version that comes with another touton stacked into/onto the regular version, with an added sausage patty, but I stuck to the base version. We grabbed our coffees (serve yourself from carafes) and sat down to wait for my food. My wife snagged a piece of carrot cake and it was top notch - wonderfully light, fluffy and moist and the delicious cream cheese icing, was, uh, the icing on the cake. Sorry, I had to! It wasn't long before my food was before me. The touton got the sandwich press treatment, with the griddle's indentations readily apparent in the touton. The exterior was lightly crisp from this, and the dough was pleasantly chewy. The bacon was good and crisp , and the fried egg and cheese slice combined for some breakfasty goodness. The home fries were not as expected, as they seemed to be from-frozen french fries that came with an herbal seasoning. But hey, it worked, and they were good enough for my wife to steal a bunch of them! To our deep regret, we won't yet be home for a few days, so getting some of the very tempting breads or sweets did not seem prudent, but I hope that GBB knows that we really, REALLY wanted to. The Bread Box's inglorious strip mall location belies what an asset they are to the town, but judging from the mid-morning crowd there, Gander already knows.

In fact, expect a big crowd. The restaurant was full and the drive-through lane was backed up nearly into the road when we got here. The line to order was still inside the building when we joined it, but shortly extended out into the parking lot. That said, the line did move fairly quickly. We ordered and had our drinks within five minutes, though our sandwiches--cilantro-lime chicken wraps-- took longer. Quite a bit longer. I'd worked about halfway through my medium coffee before we got them. But they were good, with more meat than I expected and weren't oversauced. You could tell the crew were stressed, but they seemed to be good spirits considering what they were up against. While waiting for the sandwiches, I heard a woman who I took to be the manager murmur "This happens every day" a few times, but she was still encouraging the staff and managing to crack a smile occasionally through the mayhem.

I had seen some favorable reviews on this restaurant, so when I finished my shopping, I went in for a quick lunch. I'm really glad that I did. I ordered a simple lunch of the Newfoundland split pea soup and a bologna sandwich. I really like split pea soup and their version was one of the best that I've had. It was chocked full of seasoning pork, carrots and as a bonus, a big dumpling was located in the middle of the bowl. The bologna sandwich took me back to my childhood days, as not many places these days offer bologna as an option. The bologna itself had a very good flavor and the sandwich was fixed very much like a BLT, with lettuce, tomato and mayo. Based on my experience here, one should at least give this place a try and if I happen to be back in the gander area again, I certainly will be back.

This place is definitely the small town diner ambiance and you could tell most people knew one another. We came right at lunch and it was busy but we still only waited 5-10 min for a table. We were served right away and the server was patient with us when we changed our minds a bit choice wise. We had the special which was a chicken wrap and a turkey wrap both with soup. The food came out quickly, was fresh and the soup very flavorful! Our waters were kept full and the server was so sweet to our little girl and even gave her a special cookie treat. We had hoped to try the famous "moose farts" but they didn't have any that day sadly. So we "settled" for the chocolate dipped peanut butter cookies that will remain a staple in our minds as one of the top cookies ever! Great stop for lunch for sure!
