The Tax Shoppe was our go-to place for me and many family members for decades. But no longer. Service has declined markedly. Example, a family member dropped off all the docs 6 weeks ago for a straightforward tax return. Today is April 15th and The Tax Shoppe has still has not completed them after many many phone calls. Note that for the most part the 5 star reviews you see are from many years ago and the poor reviews are more recent. Prices have also risen. I do my own taxers now for a fraction of the cost. read more

I have used The Tax Shoppe for over 5 years now. Always good and full of expertise. However, this year the lack of communication is evident. I dropped my documents off on 2/20/23 though the door slip. 2 weeks goes by and NOTHING. I email--they said it's with the accountant. Another 5 days goes by NOTHING. Does it really take 3 weeks to even look at my material. I had specific questions about my return this year. Been waiting anxiously and NOTHING. as of 3/12/23- I will update and see how they fix this situation. Also, still no in person meetings which I requested. Come on. Let's improve our customer service guys! It's deteriorated completely. read more

If I could give this awful collection of people less than one star I would. Whatever you do, DO NOT TRUST THIS COLLECTION OF SCAMMERS. First they are outright fraudulent. They tell you "all the ways" they can get you a great refund. Well guess what, turns out those ways are actually illegal. Then when they get caught they have no response. Forgetting their fraudulent behavior their just not good at their jobs. They repeatedly missed details and flat out misfiled things. And when they do things wrong don't expect anyone to help or be polite. No, THEY make the mistake but get to treat YOU like garbage that is IF they ANSWER you. The sad truth is I am not the only person this happened to but I ignored their accounts to me about it. Please do not be like me. I am warning you. I would not recommend using this Tax Shoppe. My tax return was entered in with the incorrect bank information and they did nothing to help except tell me to call IRS. This is after it was delayed until a June payout because of errors in the filing. I will not be using them again and I suggest others avoid. read more

Have been a customer for over thirty years. Had nothing but superb service. Recommended family and friends. Unfortunately that ended this year. I recommended The Tax Shoppe to a friend and regretted doing so. she submitted her documentation in March. By April 25 not a word on the status. I called to check up and requested to speak with Phil Mazziota, the owner. That in order ask the status since interest will have to be paid on any taxes owed. All I got was a surly call taker telling me Phil was too busy to speak and there was no chance of him calling me back. I was told the paperwork should have been submitted sooner and they had 4,000 returns to process. It was all the fault of the person I recommended and at that point she hung up on me. I recommended The Tax Shoppe to someone due to its excellent service over the years and a perceived relationship with Phil. They are extremely knowledgeable and caring, and handle all the otherwise frustrating details I care not to have to learn about! I've been using Phil Mazziotta and his crew at The Tax Shoppe for several years now. I've always been amazed at how knowledgeable they are--frankly, a lot more knowledgeable than the accountants at the incredibly expensive "Big Four" firm my husband was using when I met him. When I finally got my husband to give Phil and his team a try, we were both amazed at how much money they saved us just by really knowing and understanding the tax code (and I'm talking 6 figures). Meanwhile, their charges are incredibly reasonable. I've never sent an accountant a thank-you present before, but this year Phil saved us so much money (all for a total of only $1100 in fees) that I not only felt the need to write this review, but I also couldn't help but send him a gift. I've been using the services here for about 2 years. Recently I had a less than satisfactory experience where I was quoted incorrect prices and met with client services that were far from stellar. I was quoted a price for tax services in 2010 for my business after my personal taxes had been filed. I agreed and paid that amount. I was then called 2 months later about a balance for additional services that were "left out" of the original quote. I tried to fight this amount and left it unpaid pending their investigation. I never heard back from them until June 2011. Jennifer, an employee here, was rude and very abrasive when she called me in regards to a IRS letter I needed assistance with. While I think Phil is amazing and very professional, the staff here needs re-training when it comes to quotes, book keeping and customer service. read more

Even though I moved to Virginia years ago, I still have Phil (well, Phil's staff these days) do our taxes and am always happy with the service we get. Back in the day, I dealt with Phil directly and the operation has gotten so large that I haven't talked to him in years...but they always tell us that he reviews every return before finalizing it. The Tax Shoppe goes above and beyond finding ways to save you money and adds nice little extras like comparing your return to previous years or calling out why your refund was higher or lower than the year before. I have been using the tax shoppe for two years and my family has been using Phil for much longer than that, about 6 years if I remember correctly. Today (off season) I needed to pull past information that I didn't have readily available. Luckily, I called and Rita was able to send over the documents quickly. I've been using the Tax Shoppe to prepare my income tax returns since 2013. Phil is a character, knows the ropes and I've enjoyed sitting down with him once a year to discuss my taxes, Brooklyn and the way things have changed. But ultimately, this is not why I hire a CPA or the firm behind him. First of all, it's very unprofessional for any established entity to use a search engine e-mail address. They used to use Yahoo and it now looks like they finally figured out that gmail is more secure. It's easy and free enough for any business to get an e-mail with your own URL suffix. That should have been a red flag for their level of professionalism. For the most part, staff is friendly but their skill with tax preparation is slow and inconsistent. They started out fine but over that years have become careless with the accuracy of numbers, something of a priority in accounting. I've had to have several adjustments and revisions made in the past year and I felt like unless I was making the big bucks and paying them for it, my concerns were at the bottom of their pile. In any case, I'll be going elsewhere for TY2017. read more
