Last Saturday, we visited the largest, permanent, model railroad display in the mid-Atlantic, owned…read moreby the Baltimore Society for Model Engineers. The Society was founded in March 1932 and is the oldest exclusively model railroad club in the United States. They maintain 2,500 square feet of model railroad displays of steam and diesel freight and passenger trains and trolleys, plus so much more. It was fun to see all the parts of the display - it really gives you a glimpse into the history of railroading. It is not easy to find, as the doorway is tucked into the left front center of the building and the society is located on the third floor with no elevator. The display is normally open on the second Sunday of each month, except May.

Bathrooms are located in the parking area next door, which has free parking. We stayed for about two hours and my toddler loved it. Don't forget to stop by Woody's for ice cream after!

Also it's next to Kitty Pozer Garden, and the historic old town hall. A spot to kick back a bit, although I wish there was an ice skating rink or something. Space is limited, but not as well done as the old town Manassas one is. On a plus note Woodys Ice Cream is across the street. The tables are fairly comfortable. This is a delightful venue for "Rock the Block," and other events. Also the streets in old town are quite pedestrian friendly. Do be wary, but by all means enjoy the best part of Fairfax City. Get that ice cream or other foods from so many close by restaurants. The fountains add a look of intrigue.

Brutalist is a powerful movie with great acting and some stunning scenery shots (I especially loved the scenes shot in Venice and the mountains of Italy). But beware, this movie is nearly 4 hours long! I'm curious about the inclusion of "Café" in the theater's name. There's a refreshment bar downstairs and one upstairs, but I haven't seen a café. Maybe there's one hidden around a corner I don't know about. You can get your tickets at a kiosk downstairs. I'm not sure if you can even buy one from a staffer. Matinee prices end at 2:00pm. Regular prices as of this writing are $17.50/adult, $14.50/senior and $14/child. That's notably higher than at other theaters in the area. We saw Brutalist in theater #2. In theater #2, the best view is in the third row from the top. Nice large screen and a very good sound system. But an ADA alert: the elevator was out of order on our visit yesterday. So if you can't walk up an escalator or stairs, you couldn't see a movie! And to go back down, there is not an escalator (the escalator only goes up).

Is visiting the Mount Air Historic Site a destination? I don't think so, but I appreciate the…read morededication of activists to preserve history. Located in a subdivision, park on the street and follow the path to the ruins. There are three places with ruins- the foundation of the 18th century house, what's left of old Greek Revival columns, and two small wooden structures. All except the columns are fenced off. Several signs are scattered throughout the space, but half are almost impossible to read due to wear and tear. It's worth noting that even though the land was used as a plantation whose owner enslaved people, there is no mention of that and how evil that was. It's a huge miss since acknowledgement and condemnation is one small step toward creating a more equitable society for all.

Tobacco growers improved the routes for delivering this valuable crop which was about 1/2 of all colonial exports. Draft animals pulled large rolling cylindric casks or hogsheads along the original courses of Alexandria-Leesburg and Little Falls Roads. 1730 law established dockside warehouses & inspectors. They set the quantity and quality of tobacco casks and issued notes to farmers. Notes were legal tender, forming the foundation of Virginia economy.
