The surfrider has always been such a favorite of mine. I had been itching to go back since I first visited a few years ago. We finally made it back and it was as great as ever. We enjoyed some snacks and drinks on the rooftop, had our morning tea/coffee delivered, and we did their "Netflix and chill" add on where they hand deliver fresh warm cookies and popcorn. To me it's worth the price for a fun stay!

Still epic five years after last visit. I was in town for a business meeting at nearby Pepperdine and decided to splurge on Friday night stay after meeting concluded. By splurge, I mean spend the most money I have ever spent for one night stay. As our reservation was messed up on Priceline (my fault not theirs), the front desk manager upgraded us to the Malibu suite. wow!!!!! I think this was the most. As a surfer, with Malibu 1st point right out the front, this hotel is the one. I love this hotel and had a fun surf front at Malibu and enjoyed the community for a quick 24 hour R&R. Hopefully it is not five years before return. Looking back on our last trip my son was on a college visit trip in Los Angeles area and now has graduated from college. :) time flies

Nice little fridge and set up.

We were in Southern CA for my brother's wedding and decided to stay one more night. We looked around online and decided on Surfrider for one night. The hotel is small and so modern and clean, streamlined. Cory, at the front desk was so kind, helpful and warm! Same with Coco at their rooftop bar and restaurant. The food was delicious! Oh, and don't get me started on how refreshing and unique the drink was that Coco made called The Endless Summer (I apparently forgot to take a picture of this drink)! The hotel is across the street from a sunny and welcoming pier, and of course, views of the shimmering ocean. The hotel is a bit pricey, but it is Malibu, CA, after all. It was worth it, we just wish we could have stayed longer than one night.

Surfrider Malibu is a dreamy, quaint boutique hotel in Malibu. Reception area is well done with easy check in process, friendly/helpful staff who walk you to your room and make sure you are settled in. Take your coffee card back to the reception area and the next morning they bring you your free coffee delivery made to order. After check in, had to go straight up to the rooftop deck for moonlit cocktails and cookies and milk...yum!! The accommodations are fantastic. We stayed in the "Surfer's Hideout" which was lovely albeit as they warned there was definitely kitchen noise above us in early morning. That said it was a nice accommodation with everything we needed, nice decor, and ultimately a good night sleep at an amazing spot on PCH across from the Malibu pier, Surfrider Beach, and only 1/2 mile beautiful stroll to the Malibu Country Mart. There are definitely other much more posh rooms available if you desire, but would definitely book ahead of time for those ones (we were lucky to get our room last minute). If you are going to go surfing, they have boards and SUP available. Once you return they have a nice outdoor shower to rinse off. Check out is at 11am but they were very happy to have us keep our car parked until at least 3pm and to enjoy their amenities the remainder of the day (rooftop deck, surf equipment and outdoor shower, etc). It was definitely the little staycation that we needed and truly look forward to coming back sometime soon.

    Pasta with no sauce

I've been coming to The Surfrider for the past three years for my birthday as well as the occasional spontaneous staycation, but ever since Casetta Group took over management in Sept. 2023 and began focusing more on influencer marketing, the hotel has lost a lot of its charm. That being said, it obviously has held a special place in my heart (hence why it pains me to write this), so I'll start with some positives: Communications: You can text the front desk for any requests and room service, which is massively convenient. The room: Each room I've stayed in has been cozy, inviting, and outfitted with great amenities like Grown Alchemist products and beach towels and a beach bag for guests to use. The linens are so incredible that I've purchased the same set for my own home. As other reviewers have pointed out, the walls are thin and you can't escape the noise from the highway, but I've never minded -- if you do, however, there are earplugs and even a white noise machine in the room for your use. Morning coffee service: You can fill out a coffee card each night for free coffees to be delivered to your room in the morning. Such a special touch! The rooftop: The Surfrider has the best rooftop view in Malibu (even better than Soho House Malibu, IMO). If you arrive early, you can check in and leave your bags downstairs and enjoy the rooftop, and you can even enjoy the rooftop for the rest of the day after you check out. Front desk staff: The staff at reception went above and beyond. In previous years, one amenity included was a scented room spray in each room; on this trip, I was told via text that they've done away with sprays in the room as of earlier this week, but would be selling them for $65. When I expressed disappointment, the staff offered to have me pick up a bottle for the room for the remainder of the trip, and I truly appreciate the thoughtfulness. As for the negatives, I'd say it was the overall service. A week and a half before my visit, the hotel reached out to inform us that there would be kitchen renovations during the time we'd be there, and as such, there would be a limited menu of just light bites during the day. While this isn't a huge deal, it wasn't listed on the website, and I would have liked to have had this in consideration before booking. It would also have been nice to receive some kind of food/beverage credit for the inconvenience if they weren't able to notify earlier. While everyone working the front desk was lovely, the service on the rooftop restaurant during this stay left a lot to be desired. With the exception of one time, each time I visited the rooftop throughout a 2 nights/3 day stay, the staff wouldn't acknowledge me unless I chased them down. On one occasion, I was alone on the rooftop, and a couple came up after me and were immediately tended to and served mocktails and menus before I was able to flag someone to acknowledge me. When we tried to order room service one night, we were told the two items we wanted weren't available (it seems the menus on the roof and the room are different, and the ones in the room weren't updated), so we ended up DoorDashing from a nearby restaurant. On the second night, we ordered the items that were available, but the pappardelle pasta with Italian sausage that my friend ordered came with no sausage or sauce, so we had to notify the front desk and wait while they re-made the dish. On the last morning before checkout, I sat on the roof for 30 minutes and no one stopped by to offer any menus or water, so I gave up on breakfast and left. As another reviewer mentioned, they don't do anything special like a glass of bubbly for birthdays or anniversaries, you're just given the option to purchase things to be put in your room ($60 for a batch of 3 servings of cocktails, etc). This felt more understandable when they were a smaller operation, but now that they've been taken over by a hospitality group, it feels a little egregious. Overall, it's a nice place with a great location, but has gone on the decline since last year. I'd be open to trying another stay here at some point (and would update my review if I ever did), but it feels like it might be time to move on to other hotels in the area, especially for the price. My feedback would be to focus less on influencers and more on improving overall experiences for all guests.

Ehhhhh...never again. Rooms too tiny, no coffee maker, incredibly loud traffic on PCH not relaxing at all. The staff was amazing, the rooms were cute, and the whole place was incredibly clean.

Loved our stay here!!!!! From the anesthetic to the service, everything was on point. I loved every second of being here. The rooms were so cute and smelled sooooooo good. Loved it how we could watch Netflix on the TV without having to log in with our personal accounts. The service was phenomenal. The hotel packed us a picnic to take to the beach. And the rooftop was amazing!!!we ordered tea and the servers were so nice and accommodating. Can't wait to go back here!

11/16/20 - Arrived for early check-in with decent parking space, front staff was lovely, room wasn't available. Toured me around the facility, lead me to the rooftop bar and restaurant. Beautiful view. We waited there until our room was ready. Food was tasty and the ambience was calming. Welcome package to the room included complimentary use of surfboard, paddle boards, mini cooper (during the stay) and drip coffee in the morning. 11/17/20 - currently in the groundfloor room, had the worst experiece last night. Reason? Too thin walls and ceiling, noisy neighbors all around. Music with loud bass blaring through the next door room, we can hear conversations like as if we were right in front of them; And, from the room upstairs, non-stop walking.. all night and all morning? What is going on up there?! I can't wait to have that coffee in the morning to drown the sleepless night thoughts.

I really enjoyed my "staycation" here, especially the beautiful decor and the rooftop bar. Conveniently located across from Malibu pier. Complimentary coffee in the morning. The bathroom smelled like a spa with Parachute home robes. Parking isn't free FYI. I would definitely come back as a mini getaway.

    Great views

This was my third time returning to Surfrider, but unfortunately, it might be the last. There's much to love here, but I think the quality has gone downhill while the prices have risen. THE GOOD: The rooftop is spectacular, so cozy, the views are incredible. You can sit here for hours enjoying the waves and the sun. The beds and linens are so comfortable. The Surfrider beach is iconic and it's so fun to be close to it and get to watch all the surfers come and go. Their coffee service in the morning is a unique touch and always sets the day off right. They're always burning a candle in the lobby that smells incredible and I love their merchandise and little welcome area. You do feel like it's your own beach house. THE BAD: My first interaction with Surfrider started off rocky because I contacted them in advance of my first stay in 2022 to request a plus-size robe. A robe in the room is a cornerstone amenity for high-quality hotels like the Surfrider, and I already know as a plus-size traveler that I need to ask for the appropriate size ahead of time. I always try to do so well in advance so that I don't put the hotel on the spot. I typically get one of two responses: (1) the hotel says no problem, they'll have an appropriately sized robe in the room for me (because they already do this). Or (2) they apologize because they don't currently have extended sizes in their stock, but they say they will add to their inventory for the future. Even if they don't stock it in time for my stay, it makes me happy to know that the next guest won't have to advocate to get a robe that fits. But the Surfrider's response was not great. They basically just said: "Sorry, we have nothing to fit you." Mmkay! When I showed up, the views were spectacular and the rooms were so lovely that I was able to forget all about this first interaction and just really enjoy the time there. That first stay in 2022 was awesome. My next stay there in 2023 was also great, but I did notice some wear and tear on the rooms, such as marks on the walls and cup rings on the tables. But that seemed like no big deal. This year, I returned again with my friend for her birthday, but unfortunately several things were not great. Service on the roof was slow, and they had a limited menu this time compared to the previous two stays. Information about this limited menu wasn't on the website and was emailed to us. When she did go for a bite, my friend didn't receive service on the roof for over 20 minutes and ended up leaving. The rooms showed more extensive wear and tear this time, with a number of marks and scuffs on the walls and damaged wood on the tables and in the bathroom. We ordered room service on our last night, and my Italian sausage pasta dish was served with no meat or sauce (see photo). They were very kind about replacing it, but it took an additional 30 minutes to get a correct dish. Little touches like room spray in the room were gone. For the price, unfortunately, I don't think the quality of service and accommodations are there anymore. I'd love to be wrong and hope to see things turn around!

We come here for Ethan but the ocean view is nice too. Ethan is the best bartender and his spicy margaritas are sooo good. Fish tacos, steak tacos and pasta are all fire. But the spicy margaritas are the best in the country. Ethan really is the best bartender!

Legit amazing! All of the food was 10/10, the rooms were cleaned well (we checked lol) and the staff was BEYOND courteous + attentive. This place is a gem!! I was there with a wedding party and was one of the few locals - I will definitely be back!! Thank you surfrider team :)

This hotel charges anywhere from 600 to over $1000 a night so it is not in a class of Hotel where you expect them to skimp on the food. However, the bakery goods they serve are brought in from somewhere else, not prepared on site, and refrigerated so when you have a chocolate croissant, you have the choice of having them bake it, which turns into melted chocolate or not warmed, which makes it taste like rubber. While this is somewhat of a petty complaint there are just certain things you expect of hotels that cater to people who can pay anywhere from 600 to a couple thousand dollars a night and you expect that certain things are in line with that degree of expense. However, in this case, not only the croissants, but the food and menu is somewhat marginal and clearly they are in need of someone new overseeing the kitchen Also, when I did ask for the manager, someone introduced himself as a person who was on duty not necessarily the manager in the response I got is something that I really dislike. The response is that we've been doing this for years. Having refrigerated bakery goods is not something they should be doing for years at this type of restaurant. This is one thing that really needs to be changed if I want refrigerated, croissants, or pastries I I can go to Ralph's or Vons or a grocery store. Frankly, even a donut shop has better bakery goods than this hotel.

Shortly after we were seated, a table of approximately ten children--ranging from toddlers to early elementary age--was placed nearby with no adult supervision at the table. Their parents were seated separately and appeared completely disengaged from what was happening. The result was nonstop chaos: children jumping on chairs, rolling on the floor, fighting at the table, and shouting throughout the dining room. At no point did any parent intervene. To be clear, this is not about children being present. It's about adults failing to manage their children in a shared public space--and, more importantly, about restaurant management allowing this behavior to continue unchecked. It showed a profound lack of consideration for the other guests who, like us, paid full price for what is supposed to be a quality dining experience. What made this especially frustrating was the complete absence of intervention from staff or management. Allowing one table to completely disrupt the dining room is disrespectful to every other guest. A restaurant--particularly one positioning itself as an elevated destination--has a responsibility to set and enforce basic standards of conduct. Overall, the evening left us feeling that courtesy, consideration, and basic dining-room etiquette were not priorities here. I strongly encourage management to rethink how situations like this are handled, because no guest should have their experience ruined by unchecked behavior at another table.

My daughter had made the reservations for me (I much rather do my own reservations) and when I read other reviews here I was worried. But when I arrived and went into my room it was perfect. The room was completely renovated and everything worked, and it was spotless. The hotel itself looked to have been built many decades ago, but it takes those many decades to get the mature beautiful landscaping that they have. The staff was awesome. Free parking is unheard of this near to a beach (I had to pay $65 down the PCH from here to park at the multiple thousand dollar reception that I paid for) . This is the perfect place to stay if you are attending a beach wedding it is just 10 minute away. In short look at the more recent reviews and ignore the one from many year ago as this place has been renovated.

The rooms are serviceable, mostly clean, with fridge, microwave and coffee maker. Also many have decks or patios. However if you are looking for a three-star accommodation, this is not it. The owners have i obviously put some work into upgrading the motel, but it is still rough around the edges. The pool is fine but small and the pool furniture was not adequate for your group. There is a strange large side yard with some old padded chairs, but it is an under utilized space. The rooms were trying hard but still could use fresh paint. The TV is Roku only when it would be super easy to add broadcast TV, so we could have watched the Oscars. I booked a super rate ($150) on a secondary pre-pay website but friends paid significantly more --$100-$150 -- for the same size room.

The views are great, and loved the wildlife around (humming birds, peacock, and frogs). The breakfast was so delicious too (scrambled eggs, sausages, gluten free muffins, fruit, orange juice and lots of French pressed coffee). Would definitely recommend this place - it's so cozy, peaceful and picturesque. Thank you Warren! I loved my stay!

Wonderful stay! Warren and family took excellent care of us. We stayed in the Rhett and Scarlett…read moreroom in the upstairs corner of Casa Rosa and it was perfect. So relaxing and comfortable, the room and closets were so spacious - and the bathroom area was as well. It had views and natural light everywhere and a wood burning fireplace. They provide fire wood and will bring it to the room and set it up for you. Even the shared common areas have fireplaces. I highly recommend that you get there right at check in so you can truly enjoy the space. I even brought some watercolors and painted a bit from the upstairs patio across from the room. They provide snacks and hot chocolate and tea that you can make in the kitchen too. We ate at Cafe on 27 (just like 5 mins away) and I highly recommend that for lunch before check in - but make a reservation because the wait can be 2 hours. Warren and son cook and serve the morning breakfast which you can attend at either 8:30 or 9:30 (you can choose which one you want) and it's family style where everyone gets to chat and learn about each other. The sunlight and birds (there are peacocks and roosters) woke us up around 7:30 so we hiked and explored the area to do the 9:30 breakfast. Breakfast was coffee, tea, water, and Oj, scrambled eggs, sausage, and hot biscuits! Warren is very interesting and shared stories about his musical career, travels, and the history of the beautiful Craftsmanesque style house. We loved our stay and hope to return!

Check in was a breeze thanks to Joanne at the front desk. She was very welcoming, treated us like VIPs, and gave us great info. The room having a full size fridge (not a mini fridge) came in clutch with all our drinks, leftovers, and Trader Joe's perishables. At Joanne's recommendation, we arrived early to the continental breakfast the following morning (~730a) as it understandably gets crowded later. Breakfast was decent - eggs, sausage, vegetarian chorizo, tortillas, waffle maker, fruit, cereal, bread, yogurt, beverages. On our last day, we were looking to fill our cooler with some ice before heading out. Unfortunately the vending machine on our floor ran out of ice so we went looking around the lobby area where the rooms are but couldn't find anything. That's when the sweetest employee, Patty (in the kitchen/buffet area), gave us ice from their kitchen's commercial ice machine. Huge shoutout to Joanne and Patty! The service we received at Homewood was top notch and we will definitely make it a point to come back. Added bonus - it's a pet friendly hotel!

During our stay, we regularly…read moreused the hotel's amenities, including the breakfast area, and I even conducted business meetings there. However, my experience took a very concerning turn when I was suddenly locked out of my room. When I went to the front desk for assistance, I was told--very loudly and in front of other guests--that I had an outstanding balance. This was both shocking and embarrassing, especially because the hotel was already holding $2,685.00 on my credit card. Despite this, I was required to make an additional payment of $1,400.00, even though I had only stayed four nights at that point. The following day, I was locked out again and told there was still a balance and that the hotel had been attempting to contact me. I later discovered they had been calling the wrong phone number. As a loyal Hilton Honors member who travels frequently and has stayed with Hilton properties many times, I found the way this situation was handled extremely unprofessional and humiliating. I am currently disputing the charges, as the hotel held $2,685.00 and I was later charged an additional $2,700.00, which appeared excessive and was never clearly explained. In addition to the billing issues, the condition of the room was disappointing. The property was dated and not well maintained, and we experienced ongoing plumbing problems, including toilets that would not flush due to apparent sewer line issues. Based on this experience, I would strongly advise others to proceed with caution when booking this property. What should have been a routine extended stay became an unnecessarily stressful and embarrassing situation that has significantly impacted my confidence in staying with Hilton in the future.
