It will be difficult for you to enjoy everything the gym has to offer while you are standing outside, looking in at everyone else enjoying it. I'm on the elliptical, why are you looking at me? Are you trying to get in? Do you have the magic key fob? Good thing the gym has power sunshades - with the press of a button by the door your gaze is no more, reduced to a blob of a shadow that I can only presume will grow tired and move along. Sorry, friend. The gym is packed with just about everything you could ask for. There are TVs on multiple walls, plus individual ones on each piece of cardio, all with full cable. The yoga room has (yoga, yes) as well as fitness on demand and plenty of floor space for killer ab workouts. The pool, while not technically part of the gym, is amazing, warm, and good for laps (which is exercise, so i'll let it slide.) You get access all this without ever having to step foot outside. Truth be told, this is my late evening and weekend gym. I'm up and out in the early morning most weekdays to get to the Equinox in my office building, because you can't ever have too many eucalyptus soaked towels and steam room opportunities in your life.

However, every so often there is a place that is so bad, that has bent out of shape to be uninviting, difficult, hostile, and overall unpleasant that you have to stand up to attention, open your eyes, count your losses, and leave, never looking back. I moved into Union City three years ago. Even before that I was an avid member of LA Fitness just across 30th and below Shop Rite. Now, that is a gym with history -- going back to when it was just another Bally's Total Fitness franchise operating for those who wanted big weights, heavy loads, and trustworthy machines that you could use and use and use without ever experiencing confusion or injury. Sadly, LA Fitness transitioned to Esporta, and Esporta eventually closed right around the pandemic. There was little warning -- now you see it; now you don't. Barely a notice on the door. Gone. I was always mildly curious about the Crunch that I could clearly see from the windows of LA Fitness. I'd been a brief visiting guest way back in the late 90s when there was a location in the West Village at the tail end of Christopher. It sat close to the now vanished Serge Gym, which was also known as a gym where you went to get big. I joined Crunch Hoboken in 2021 after Esporta/LA Fitness' demise. I'd been shopping for a place to work out, one that was not a Planet Fitness or Blink clone, one with real weights, plates, machines, and generous hours to include weekends and holidays. I loved the Hoboken location and will often go there even now three years later. I also go to the Tribeca location despite that its one glaring minus is the level of stairs you have to climb just to get down to the locker/stretch room, or that there is a mezzanine level with cardio equipment, which means, Crunch Tribeca is four stories of gym and nary an elevator in sight. But I digress. [Great gym, mind you, perfect location, hidden in plain sight and almost never packed.] Tonight was my second night visiting Crunch North Bergen. The first time was when I recently moved. Again, curiosity did me in from the days when I would see it, its sigh peeking out from behind some scant trees as it sat across Starbucks and next to Aldi's. I assume that like other Crunch locations it would sport a dense layer of free weights and Hammer machines, a bevy of squat cages, cambered bars, the whole nine yards. Come in and lift heavy, and if you can, do your cardio. Nope. I could not have been more wrong. The first time, it took me forever to get a bicep/tricep/shoulder workout. Every machine was incomprehensible, hostile things made to look sleek and ultra modern, but ultimately examples of machines that suit no purpose for the human body. It was also packed to the gills with some of the more unfriendliest people I have had the misfortune of seeing on this planet Earth -- not a one truly working out but either spotting someone else, chatting, texting, but hoarding all the equipment, the plates, or the area, as if laying claim and damned be everyone else. Broken machines, check. A weird smell in the air, check. Attitude, check. Women clearly looking for their baby daddy who have no idea what they're supposed to be doing with dumbbells or machines, check. That bro who's allegedly training his girl but also aggressively checking the candy, but of course. When you have a lack of actual equipment -- no Hammer Strength, no Life Fitness, not even Precor or Rogue -- and instead you have a sea of near impossible to understand machinery aimed to "giving you a workout", you're in trouble. I've been lifting weights for over 35 years. I've been to other Crunch locations. Shame on this one for being a rung lower than your bargain basement Planet Fitness, catering for the lowest common denominator and cashing in on memberships, not caring if machines work, you have an adequate number of machines and free weights for if you have a crowd, and labelling yourself a gym for Crunchers. And let's not get into its location. Crunch N Bergen is a logistic nightmare to get to. IT might appear to be in a somewhat accessible spot near JFK Blvd and 29, but to access the location you have to walk through a parking lot infested with homeless and other unsavory things. Imagine going there on foot at night. Seeing people strung out everywhere, some even reqching out like a scene out of a horror movie. Adding insult to injury, no lights, so good luck finding your way over crumbling asphalt and blinding lights. You could very well get assaulted -- and who would find out? CCTV? I thought the first time I came it was probably me. Now I realize, it's not even close to me, it's just a terrible franchise pretending to be what it's not. Last time for me, I am done, I will remain with the Signature locations I go to in the City.
