The show itself was just as bad. The prizes were bizarre and low-quality. Things like dildos and a cardboard cutout of Snoop Dogg, nothing like the prizes you typically get at this type of event. Overall, I can't say much good about either the show or the venue. It was uncomfortable, unsafe, and not very enjoyable.

I saw the Churchill there, Matthew Sweet, the Lemonheads, even Bruce Springsteen stopped by there. I I saw Ron Haney, I killed me, and the outcry there. That's all I remember. The 50 Cent beers really are a crowd pleaser. Sometimes a DJ. This club is often featured in movies made in New York and New Jersey.

The service as far as entering the venue, showing your tickets, etcetera was seamless. Again, there's no vip seating or box seats, it's a bowling alley turned concert venue so general admission/first come first serve rules apply. My only gripe would be how cold it was inside. Of course, the more crowded, the less chilly. But still, you could feel a draft whenever the doors opened. Overall, we had a wonderful time. I'd go again!

There were no bathroom lines at off-peak moments, at closing time there were lines but not of record lengths. Geography note for NYC-area people: it's walkable to the train station but you might be waiting a bit.

The bathrooms are spacious and clean, and I can't emphasize enough how important that is. My suggestion, particularly for sold-out shows, is to arrive early, like an hour and a half before doors, and park your car at the VFW across the street and pop in for a few three-dollar beers. The prices at Starland are considerably more ($8.50 for a 12 oz can) and the VFW is a great pre-game option. The sound in Starland is good, and their layout is one of their biggest strengths; pretty much anywhere you stand you'll have a good view of the stage. It never seems far away. I'm taking off one star, however, because the show I was at (Testament / Overkill / Destruction) was clearly over-sold. I moved around, checked out a few vantage points during the headliner and eventually found a spot with some breathing room, in a raised area by one of the bars. But man, just imagining some kind of emergency situation and the absolute chaos that would ensue with such a packed-in, oversold crowd, it makes a person nervous.

The venue seats 891 people. I recently saw Sō Percussion JACK Quartet, a free performance offered by the University. This group was performing the following week at Carnegie Hall and I was fortunate to see some of the new material they would be playing at Carnegie. The acoustics and sound are wonderful. A wide variety of events, concerts, lectures and musical artists perform here throughout the year. Upon occasion, there may be a dance or theatrical production.

That was a great show, but for no particular reason I didn't visit Stone Pony again, other than an outdoor show on their Summer Stage, so this past weekend's Offspring "Just the Punk Stuff" show was my first time inside the building in quite a while. It was more or less as I remembered. Capacity is 850 people, and the way the floor is set up, rectangular-style, pretty much wherever you're standing provides a good view of the stage. The floor doesn't incline, though, so shorter folks should take this into consideration. The Offspring sounded great at this venue. The speakers were crisp and loud and all around you (ear plugs necessary for me, for sure, but it isn't, like, ear-splitting decibels or anything). I like the height of the stage (about three feet), and while I'd always prefer my club shows to be sans barricade, at least this barricade isn't super far from the stage, so you can still get very close to the band. Security is friendly and on point. Any time a crowd surfer was coming up behind me, I had advance warning by the staff who'd be quickly moving to the appropriate spot, anticipating and ready to bring the crowd surfer down over the other side of the barrier. Staff was friendly, also, from the people taking tickets to the ones inside doing security, merch, etc. Of course, Stone Pony is in a good location, also. I recommend Porta, just about a half-block away, for drinks and food before a show. Park via the Asbury Parking App (I paid like twenty-two bucks to park for about seven hours). And there are public restrooms directly across the street from Stone Pony, in case you're on line for a show, waiting to get in, and need to use the john. (I can't comment on drink prices, as I did not buy any booze at this show.)

We still went in so that I could experience this iconic American Treasure, but we didn't stay for long. It's a super cool spot. Very small. I would have been so excited to see them play here. All was not lost though. I fell in love with Asbury Park. It is such a fun spot with so much to do! I guess a trip to Canada is on our travel list now.
