After staying here for a long weekend, I paid cash for my stay but only to get a charge on my credit card the following month. I tried fighting the charge but to no avail. Shame on The Strand Hotel, someone forged my signature on a receipt and got away with it. I hope writing this will make buyers to beware of the receipt, read it before you leave and if you pay cash, make sure they write PAID CASH on the receipt. Being in a rush during check out, trusting people were my main downfall. A major red flag should have been after I handed the guy cash, he asked me if I needed a receipt. ok. Location is great. Other than that I really can't believe this one is 4 star hotel I'm not buying it. First of all I stayed in superior king and room was really small the bed is right next to door. You have to ask for coffee maker and ice since they're not in the room. Roof top bar is not that fancy as photo and it's also small. Sight seeing of empire state bldg is spectacular and atmosphere is cozy though. I booked this hotel through olotels.com for $255 without breakfast and when I checked price through hotel website and it was $240 with breakfast all in. Staffs are kind and helpful. read more

My friend was staying here and was excited to go to the rooftop. As soon as our elevator doors opened to pronounce the grand view, my friend stated, "That's it???" We had a two night stay at the Strand. It is a great little hotel in the middle of it all..a 10 minute walk either direction to the Theatre district and shopping at Herald Square. Our room was on the fifth floor and right by the elevator. Luckily, we did not experience any noise disturbances or problems being located where we were. We had a superior king room and was pleasantly surprised to find ample space and a decent sized bathroom. The space was clean and relaxing. We did however, find hair on a felt blanket that was in between the sheets. It was off putting but we just removed it and kept it off the bed for the rest of our stay. Also, we did not have much of a view-- an alley way to be exact. The staff was extremely courteous and friendly-- another reason why we enjoyed our stay here so much. I did a lot of research before deciding to stay at the Strand. I booked directly through the hotel's website and got an amazing rate. I hate to be the Debbie Downer of reviewers here but this is probably the worst ~fancy hotel~ I've stayed at in New York. And that's saying plenty because I've stayed at a lot of them. Fancy hotels, not bad hotels. And when I say "worst", I mean in terms of the price I paid for the quality of the service I received and the size of the room I stayed in. $1200 for 3 nights. That's insane, right? But it looked so pretty on the website and it was brand new so I thought, why not splurge a little bit? First of all, don't be fooled by the website and the illusion they portray that the lobby is that spacious. I was expecting a nice hotel in a nice location but it's the odd man out, surrounded by all these old buildings and shady-looking businesses. There are two people at the front desk (because it's only big enough to fit two people) and if there are more than three people waiting in line to check in or whatever, then it gets pretty crowded because the line inevitably ends up blocking the entrance of the hotel. The front desk clerk who checked me in was very friendly, I will admit, and so are the doormen. One of them even remembered to use my name each time he opened the door for me. (Unfortunately, I never found out his name otherwise I would give him a big shout-out here!). The disappointment began when I saw the actual room. It was half the size of the other hotel rooms I had stayed at during my previous trips. There is barely any walking space between the desk and the bed. The bed itself is too "stiff" and uncomfortable. I guess I've been spoiled with my own pillow top mattress at home! Don't even get me started on the bathroom. The shower is pitiful. I understand being "green" and saving our natural resources and everything but after a long flight in a stuffy airplane with people coughing all over you, then waiting for a cab in the cold for almost 30 minutes and enduring said cab ride from hell (because the driver stunk to high heaven), all I wanted was a long, hot shower and what did I get? A sprinkling of water that felt more like a leaky garden hose than a powerful gust of spray to wash the grime away. So instead of being "green" and finishing my shower in 10 minutes (which is pretty fast for me being a girl given all the "girl" things we do in there), it took me more than 30 minutes because I could barely get enough water to wash my face much less my hair and my body. My face was so close to the tiles (because that's how weak the spray was) I ran into the knobs twice and ended up with a bruise on my left breast! Very attractive. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not so spoiled that I couldn't make lemonade with the lemon of a room that I got so I didn't let any of that bother me. Didn't let the room bother me, didn't let the shower bother me, didn't even let the slow-ass elevators bother me (seriously, two elevators for a hotel with 20 floors??!!) None of that bothered me UNTIL I checked my bank account online. I discovered that THEY HAD CHARGED THE FULL $1200 PLUS $300 IN "INCIDENTALS" TO MY CARD WHEN I SPECIFICALLY ASKED THEM NOT TO. I specifically asked them if that was their policy because, if so, I would rather pay them the cash up front because I didn't want it charged to my card. The girl assured me that they just needed it for the reservation and that I could pay however way I wanted to when I checked out. So the great service I received from the front desk girl turned out to be not-so-great because not only did she do what I asked her NOT to do, by charging everything to that one card, not only did she almost deplete my entire account, she also basically effed up everything else that was scheduled for payment on that card (such as my utilities and other bills), which I had taken care of before leaving for this trip. I was pretty annoyed. No, I was effing pissed. I called the front desk to ask what the hell just happened with my card and whoever I spoke to said she would get the manager to call me and would I be in my room for the next 10-15 minutes? I said, sure. 15 minutes came and went. Then a half hour. Then an hour. Finally, when I couldn't wait around much longer lest I spend the entire day for a call that was obviously never going to come, I decided to just go down to the front desk and talk to this manager myself. Guess what? Wasn't available. All in all, I would NOT recommend this hotel to anyone. I can't find any one redeeming WOW quality about it that would make it worth your while. Not even the free breakfast and wi-fi. Whoop-de-doo. I actually had a choice between two hotels -- I booked this one and the Belvedere (where I had stayed before and loved it!). The Belvedere was $200 cheaper but I wanted to try a new hotel and now I seriously wish that I had cancelled this one instead. Oh well, you live and learn. Next time, save your $200 bucks and buy yourself a nice dinner or a fake Louis Vuitton purse on Canal Street. read more

Good place overall, good breakfast, nice staff, good location... BUT our room heat didn't work, and despite numerous attempts they could not fix it. They offered to move us to another room but that would have been a huge pain for us, so we stayed and froze. At check out I asked if they could do something for us (they could've comp'd a night or two of the 40/night valet parking) but they refused. All they offered was an upgrade if we stay there again (unlikely). Not cool. Imho if a hotel makes an error (heat not working) they should compensate the guest in some way. Offering to move us is fine, but that too comes at a cost to us (time to pack, unpack, inconvenience). I've stayed at numerous comparable places in NYC over the past couple years... UES W, Grand Hyatt, UES Intercontinental, Waldorf... all had working heating systems and no room problems. And I guarantee if they did they would have made it up to me in some way -- something that this place, unfortunately, did not do. read more

We just stayed at this cute little hotel and I have to say that apart from a few small things, this is a great establishment to stay in when visiting NYC! The pros: 1. Excellent location. 5 blocks from Times Square and 3 blocks from Macy's (for those shopaholics out there). Super central with tons of restaurants, cafes, pharmacies, and little stores everywhere. 2. Excellent service. The people at the front desk were always smiling, friendly, and enthusiastic to help with anything we needed. 3. Great rooms. Decent sized rooms for New York with modern decor. 4. Paperless signage for 'do not disturb' and 'please service my room'. Instead, you just click a button from the inside of your room and a small light goes on outside indicating your preference. Super cool! Cons: 1. Pretty bad view. One side of the hotel overlooks the Empire State Building while the other faces a bunch of tall buildings (one of which is under construction) which as you might have guessed was our view. Needless to say, we kept the blinds closed all weekend.. 2. Bed isn't the most comfortable and squeaks super loud whenever you move.. Or get in... Or get out... Hopefully it was just our bed and not all the ones in the hotel. 3. Rooms are very close to each other (we had a corner unit) and so when the door was knocked next door, it sounded like ours, etc.. 4. The restaurants/lounges in the building are not open all day. Overall, we would stay here again (although I always love trying out new places....) simply for the great location and service. 4 stars awarded :) read more

Def a very big fan of the rooftop lounge here. was here a few nights ago with a bunch of friends doing tables and bottles. the bottle girl was absolutely great, very attentive and happy to get us anything that we were looking for. the layout of the rooftop is romantic and very clean. not the biggest place but didnt mind at all. the table areas have great space and it doesnt seem like they pack the place out too much at all. it was expensive but well worth the money. the door man, well guy at the top of the elevator was really great as well. i was a little underdressed for the place but he saw i was with a large group and let me go no problem with it. again this place really shows that they appreciate the business that is being given to them. i absolutely recommend checking this roof lounge out! read more

Compared to some of the other reviews - our stay was expensive $331/nt. The hotel is nice - since it is new and just off the touristy area so easy to get to the subway/shopping but not in the midst of the madness. Pros: Its new, it's nicely decorated The staff is very friendly and accomodating Breakfast in the AM Beautiful rooftop bar Cons: Very small compared to the photos The lobby is very crowded and has bad flow. Check in is right at the entrance, and when busy makes it hard to get to the elevators, etc. Breakfast is chaotic - bad set up design Bathroom is tiny - no way 2 people can get ready at the same time. And there is no full length mirror or secondary mirror for a 2nd person to even attempt to get ready. One observation during our stay - one afternoon we came in and they were testing the emergency PA system ("this is not an emergency, this is a test") however, one moring the fire alarm went off at 7AM for a minute ??? and no annoucement that it was a false alarm......5 (yes five) fire trucks showed up to the hotel. Yes, it was a false alarm, but it would have been nice to know before seeing trucks out our window. read more

Great location! Overall fine and reasonably priced (booked through Orbitz for $150/night). Front desk: great energy and attitude. Friendly and helpful. They kept my bags during my last day after I had checked out so I could do some shopping before catching my train. Bedroom: clean, comfy bed. King size bed should have king size pillows, though. Bathroom: It was clean and well lit, but a little small. Shower pressure was weak and I wish there was a full shower door/curtain. We stayed here in April 2015 and found the place to be nice but tiny. Our room had no space around the bed to walk around and certainly no place to keep our bags. The bathroom had absolutely no place (such as a shelf) to put our toiletries on. This was SO inconvenient! We had two bad nights there due to noise in the hallways. One was particularly bad as it seems some partygoers from the rooftop bar came down and continued their party in the hallway outside our door. We had our flight home the next morning so definitely did not appreciate that. Entrance to floors should be much better controlled. The good things about this place included: chocolates on our pillows with turn down service, staff in the bar that helped us arrange a birthday cake celebration. The staff is good. For the price, this place should be better. Getting shelves in the bathrooms would be a huge improvement. read more

I stayed at the Strand for 2 weeks around Christmas for a client I was working with. I can't recommend this hotel enough. It has a very European feel about it. The room was smallish (but that's NYC), but very comfortable. A nice, comfy bed, tiled bathroom, and everything was well maintained. The breakfast they served was pretty standard continental, but everything was fresh. They also have a very friendly and service minded staff. The door to the hotel was opened for me every time I "came home", and when I checked in for my second week, the concierge recognized me before I came to the counter and called me by name - I was impressed. The Top of the Strand bar gives a great view of the Empire State building, and the bar itself is cozy, relaxed and personable. Great hotel, great staff! ROOFTOP ONLY REVIEW. You can see this from anywhere? I disagree. This is a great view - especially coming from someone who lived in an apt with a view of the Empire State building. I love the design of the open roof that can close depending on weather (reminded me of only the newest football stadiums). I like the vibe. Yes it definitely has some tourists but you can also go with a friend or a date and take a secluded area to enjoy some private time. The wines are standard for a rooftop $12 - $14. They were decent wines. And the glasses - plastic and honestly, they don't do a good job washing them. Or need new ones. Or both. But either way, before you drink, check your glass is clean and let the waitress (who doesn't come around often) know. I'll be back - for sure. read more

For the price we paid (like $250 a night off of Priceline), this was a great find. I was in town on business for a tradeshow and Rooms are clean with contemporary furnishings. Small rooms with the desk apart of the TV console and bureaus but again for the price in a midtown boutique hotel, I'm perfectly happy. HVAC was in proper working order (definitely used the heat) and my King bed and no less than 6 pillows were super comfy. Bathroom was equally upgraded with stone countertops, nice automatic lighting and spacious glass shower. Toiletries are a win for me (everything made in Italy) and if you call down to the front desk, they've got a nice little dental set with toothbrush and toothpaste. Girls: hair dryer is in the closet. Front desk / door men were very friendly and they feature free breakfast (can't vouch for quality as I never made it up in time). Wireless was spotty - sometimes slow, sometimes wouldn't work at all but hey, it's free I guess. The only thing I will say is that my room didn't have a floor-lengthed mirror! I had to basically stand on a chair to see myself in the desk mirror. Is it a deal-breaker, no but seems like a sizeable oversight in hotel planning. I dined in the restaurant during the first night. It's a nicer, casual restaurant with lounge area and dedicated dining room. Had the Tuna Nicoise salad and biz partner had the duck. The duck awhile to cook so the chef brought out some complimentary soups in the meantime (hurray). Service was prompt, food was decent so all in all, not a bad experience. Can't beat the location - a 10 minute walk out towards Broadway and you're in the thick of the Times Square madness. I'd definitely stay here again. read more

I recently visited The Strand and was really impressed with the level of customer service. Even before I arrived, the concierge helped me with restaurant options and detailed directions on getting around the city. Mike, at the front desk, accommodated my request for early check-in and late check-out without charging extra, as most hotels do. The hotel is swanky, charming, clean and in the perfect location - close to the Fashion District and Times Square. There is a rooftop bar with a fabulous view of the city. I will definitely stay there again and recommend The Strand to friends and family. read more

My sister and I just visited NYC for my first time. We walked into The Strand, from severe cold and at an early hour, after a 6 hour wait in the New Jersey Airport. We we're exhausted and ready to check in. Immediately, the doormen were inviting, welcoming and pleasant. At the front desk, Peter checked us in early, gave us breakfast vouchers and a great room with a view of the Empire State Building. He was very professional and courteous. The room was on the 17th floor. King size bed, nice amenities and chocolates during turn down service. Breakfast was delicious, a choice of 3 meals, not a buffet. Hot food, coffee and fresh fruits. We walked everywhere, with ease. It was close to walk to: Time Square Madison Square Garden The Met Central Park Chez Josephine's The NY Public Library Katz Deli The Strand Bookstore Shopping in 5th Avenue Penn Station NYC has a great asset in The Strand. read more

Wow this hotel it is amazing. Employees are very nice, they are very attentive. Rooms and all of hotel is super clean, hotel is very quiet (at least during my stayed it was). The bistro at the hotel is amazing, decor is very beautiful, we had the pleasure to eat breakfast there and good service, very fast, food was delicious!! (Make sure to try their chicken sausages for breakfast). For now on this will be my hotel of choice while in NYC. One thing that really upset me was after checking my credit card statement. They charged me an extra $45.11 for no reason but the good thing is that I called the hotel and the nice gentleman, Matt was able to delete from credit card. We got a great rate for this hotel on priceline.com. Check in was easy and friendly, and we were able to get into our room early. Everything is very new. The bathroom was large with really nice bath products, but there was no shelf whatsoever, just a pedestal sink, so nowhere to put our toiletries. The light next to the bed wouldn't turn on, and even more annoying, no plugs next to the bed on either side! This is a small thing but so important. While my phone charged, I had to get out of bed every time it beeped or I had to look something up. We were also disappointed that they have room service for lunch and dinner but not breakfast. Breakfast in bed is our favorite part of hotel stays :( I would give it two stars but the rooftop bar/lounge is so nice and the bartender was so friendly that I will give three. read more

Staff was absolutely wonderful. We arrived after an international flight and a dirty cab ride. The bellhop was already getting our bags as we got out of the cab and we were offered a glass of red wine upon arrival. The room was small, but plenty spacious for New York. We were on the first floor and kept our curtains tightly shut as our window looked out onto trash cans and an alley. Staff apologized that they couldn't accommodate us in a higher room and offered us a complimentary breakfast instead. We loved the shower with the stone tiles. The location is one of the best parts. It was a short walk to Times Square and the Empire State Building. We will definitely consider staying at the Strand on our next visit. read more

We stayed at this hotel as part of my wedding festivities in NYC. My husband and I had decided to get married in Central Park, and needed a decent hotel with a nice bar located close to landmarks for our families coming from both sides of the Atlantic. This place totally fit the bill. It is a really lovely hotel, and has that boutique hotel look and feel. We had told them we were getting married, and they were kind enough to give us a courtesy upgrade to the Empire Suite. The Empire Suite was a beautiful, up to date room. They also sent us a couple glasses of champagne and a few other nice little surprises. In general, the staff was amazing- so thoughtful and attentive. My parents room was not so nice, it smelled a bit of cigarette smoke and had some really grubby stains on the curtains. But other than that, they were happy with the room. They received macaroons on arrival, again, a nice touch. The hotel bar on the ground floor offers a free wine tasting between 4-5 pm on weekdays, which is very nice. The hours on the weekend are a bit weird- the bar opens at 5 pm, closes at 11 pm. I guess this is to not compete with the rooftop bar, but it was a bit jarring to be bounced from a bar in NYC at 11 pm. Lastly, we had our flowers for our wedding delivered here. The reception was nice enough to keep them in the bar fridge, but somehow, someone decided to rip open the groom's corsage and remove it. I am not sure what anyone would want with a groom's corsage, but whatever. I was annoyed, but in the great scheme of wedding disasters, this is minor. The fact it was 20 degrees outside and with a windchill of 8 degrees was far more worrisome! The manager though, freaked out and spent 1/2 hour running all over the neighborhood trying to replace it. Unfortunately, it was made with expensive, custom ordered flowers, so our replacement didn't match. I just stayed at The Strand Hotel for ad:tech last week and I really enjoyed it. The location is great, the hotel is chic, and the staff is professional. I was there for six nights and wasn't once let down by the service. Admittedly, the rate was a bit steep ($359/nt plus taxes) and by the time nights five and six rolled around and I had to pay for them OOP since I was no longer on the company's watch, I was hurting a bit...but it still felt 'worth it' to me. Highlight: The rooftop bar is very cool - the drinks are strong and delicious and the 'Tuscan platter' is enough to feed a party of five hungry people! Highlight: The breakfast buffet is included in the cost of the room and is really very nice. There are options which include cereal, fruit, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, pastry, meats and cheeses and more. Great perk. Highlight: Free wifi is a nice bonus. Some hotels charge for it and this offset the price of the room IMO. While some reviewers have mentioned the rooms as 'small' - I found the standard room big enough for my needs. The bed was very comfortable (bedding was quite luxurious), the flat screen TV was big, and the bathroom, while lacking a bathtub, was still nice despite the absence of a vanity mirror, Q-tips/cotton balls and nail file. Bonus: There was an umbrella in the room which became quite handy on this trip! I would definitely stay here again. I love New York. read more

Pros: Most of the staff was very friendly except for this one front desk clerk lady. Breakfast is pretty decent. Lounge/bar upstairs top floor with a cool view of ESB. Walk to times square is do-able, takes about 10 minutes. Parking is $40 for 24 hours and its valet service, they park the car 2.5 blocks away in a lot. Subway is two blocks away Cons: Rooms are tiny, but prob are standard for NYC. Elevators are small and slow. There are some adult specialty shops on the same block, might not be the greatest if you have little ones. read more

Stayed here on business for 2 nights just a week after opening. While that is, historically, a rough week to stay at a hotel, they rocked it. It was clean, everything worked, the rooms are great, the staff was beyond gracious. The rooftop bar/lounge has the best view of the Empire State building around. If they would just add some stools at the bar itself, it would be even better. The only thing holding me back from 5 stars is waiting for the restaurant to open, which is to happen Q1 2010. read more

I also enjoyed the rooftop bar, but I warn you, it is pricey; we paid $19 for two Corona's. The room was a good size and it was clean. The rooftop bar has such potential to be a great summer spot. Open-air space with a great view of the Empire State Building. Large cabana-style areas to chill with a group of friends. Retractable roof. However, as I was trying to admire the horticulture on the rooftop, I noticed there was something off... It's not just the fake, plastic plants they installed on the rooftop. On a Saturday night, it's amateur hour, jammed with tourists and hotel guests that think this rooftop is the height of NYC nightlife. For a local, this is a great spot to grab an early drink, but only one. I have to give special props to the concierge for his polite, professional demeanor and wicked sense of humor. Random tourist (female, mid-30s): Can you recommend me a place to grab dinner that isn't too far to walk in heels? Also, I want to be able to be able to get in without being a 20-year old model? Always referred out of town employees to this hotel as it is close to our NYC office and employees all said it was very clean. I finally got to go myself for office Christmas party and beds were hard as a rock. Stiff sheets and awful, lumpy pillows. But that is not the reason for my bad review. This particular night we had booked around 10 rooms for our employees. One of them called 1 or 2 days before check in to cancel as his young son suddenly died. He was told he would be charged anyways as cancellation was not within the allowed time period. This is inexcusable. Paid $199+tax... was a GREAT deal. Very modern, CLEAN, trendy boutique style hotel, great 'european' style breakfast included in the price. Rooms are super clean, very modern, staff extremely friendly. The location is central enough to get around to touristy areas in the city, so that is a plus. Parking is $33 for a self parking discount at a lot about 2 blocks away, or $40 for valet. Not the most attractive city block, but it was fine. The bar was a scene. Definitely had an AMAZING view, but it was so loud and crowded on sat night it was kind of disappointing (but expected) I wished I would have gone for an early drink when it is it probably more like a chill lounge (going along with the theme of the hotel) like a place to unwind after a long city day. But at 11ish on a sat, it was very 'clubby'. I'm sure it's amazing in the summer, being that it is a retractable roof, I would def stop by again for a pre-dinner drink if in the area. read more

I'm a huge fan of The Strand...was debating where to stay in NYC for a quick weekend getaway with hubby and I'm so happy I chose this hotel. We were greeted warmly by John in reception...we were also surprised to be upgraded to a corner room on the top (20th) floor with a balcony (standing room only) plus view of the Empire State bldg...how's that for awesome hospitality? The staff was super nice...always smiling and saying hi. Rooms were very clean, spacious and modern. Bed was comfortable, sheets were soft and new. The rooftop bar clinched it for me...we headed up there daily for a drink and to relax, while taking in the NYC view. This is my new go-to hotel when staying in NYC from here on in...thanks Strand staff! Kudos to John and Dre for making us happy! read more
